Understanding Islamist Radicalisation and Violence
19 – 21 October 2010

Theme for 2010

What is this event about?
Continuing the very successful series of annual symposia on
‘Understanding Islam’, we will concentrate this year on the much broader
concept of Islamist Radicalisation leading to violence. The event will take
place at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom at Shrivenham
from Tuesday 19 October to Thursday 21 October 2010.

It is nearly a decade after the atrocities of 11 September 2001. During this

symposium, we want to examine any lessons learned and identify the
new challenges for the next decade. In particular we will discuss:
• Threats and vulnerabilities which radical Islamism has raised in the
last decade;
• Which processes (legal, political, military) have worked and which
have not;
• Successes, failures and lessons learned;
• New emergent threats in the decade ahead (what, where, who the
opposition leaders are, and when such threats may be expected) and
how they correspond with any vulnerabilities that can be identified;
• The legal situation domestically and internationally;
• How our partners and allies have changed over the last decade;
• Any clearly identifiable risks.

This event is open to all those who have a professional or personal desire
to understand the nature of Radicalisation and the violence it can bring.
It will be of particular interest to law enforcement agencies.

Timing and Registration

The symposium will be held at the Defence Academy at Shrivenham
in the Lefroy Lecture Theatre, with Registration, refreshments, lunches
and an Evening Reception on 19 October in the Slim Building. There will
also be a Formal Dinner on 20 October. The event starts at 10.00 on
Tuesday 19 October (with registration from 09.00) and finishes with
lunch on Thursday 21 October. If you wish to attend the symposium,
please complete and return the Registration Form before
1 October 2010. Please book early to ensure a place.

Travel options and entry passes will be sent to delegates in the administrative
notes mailed out nearer the event.
