TOPIC: food

TYPE OF LESSON: vocabulary practice and acquisition

TEXTBOOK: Upstream Intermediate

TIME: 50’

OBJECTIVES:

a) cognitive objectives

By the end of the class, students will be able :

-to use specific vocabulary in meaningful contexts


-to understand and answer adequately to simple/complex questions and statements
-to improve reading skills and locate specifically required information
- to express themselves in free writing

b) affective objectives:

- to create a warm atmosphere as background for smooth and easy exchange of opinions
between teacher and students;
- to make students self-confident in the ability to use the language
- to stimulate students’ imagination and creativity

TEACHING AIDS: poster, video projector, slips of paper, ball, handouts, markers,
large sheets of paper, blackboard, notebooks
SKILLS: speaking, writing, reading, listening

ORGANIZATION: lockstep, individual and group-work

Stages of the lesson

Activity 1: Warm-up

Aim:- to create the atmosphere for the lesson


Procedure: T greets Ss and checks attendance
Interaction: T-Ss

Activity 2: Lead-in

Aims: -to draw attention that something important is going to be discussed


-to identify words related to the topic of the lesson
-to create a relaxed atmosphere
-to introduce a famous British comedian
Procedure: T shows Ss a wordsearch and asks them to identify a few words, on the spot. The words
are placed both horizontally and vertically (Appendix 1) . They will quickly see that all the words are
related to food .Then, T presents Ss a short video with Mr. Bean and asks them to spot other words
related to the topic.

Activity 3: Reinforcing the previous contents

Aims: -to learn or revise vocabulary and information relating to food, restaurants, tastes and
textures
-to get students interested in the topic by describing images, answering to
complex/specific questions, or guessing the right answer to some riddles
-to improve speaking skills
Procedure: T asks each S to pick a slip of paper. Each slip contains a task ( answer to some question,
continue a sentence or a proverb, describe an image). T brings Ss a ball and says that after each
provides the answer to his/her question, throws the ball to somebody else who also provides an
answer, and so on. (Appendix 2)

Activity 4: . Practice for consolidation through a reading activity

Aim: -to develop students’ reading comprehension skills


-to learn about the great variety of foods in Britain today
-to develop students’ ability to describe restaurants, through learning useful vocabulary
and phrases relating to food, service, prices and atmosphere
Procedure: T gives handouts to Ss and asks them to read the restaurant reviews, identifying words or
phrases which can be used to describe restaurants. (Appendix 3)

Activity 5: Practice for consolidation through a writing activity

Aims: -to use vocabulary in meaningful contexts


-to express freely in writing
Procedure: T divides the class into three groups and tells Ss that each group has to open a new
restaurant, so they have to do a brief presentation about it: food, service, prices, atmosphere
Interaction: GW
Timing: 18’
Skills: writing

Activity 6: Homework assignment and student assessment

Aim: to practise the information acquired during the class


Procedure: Ss are told to invent a dish and give a name to it.
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T

Read the following reviews about a variety of restaurants in London and identify words or
phrases that are specific to each type of restaurant and cuisine:

Yo sushi!
Food: Japanese
Price per person: £10-15
The best known sushi place in town. This restaurant is great for its raw fish. Service is
efficient and speedy. You can eat delicious sushi for a few pounds, serve yourself unlimited
beer, even select food from a conveyor belt! Sometimes there are karaoke nights here. This
restaurant is bright and unromantic but great fun.

Amaretto
Food: Italian
Price per person: £15-20
A family-owned restaurant that has faithful clients coming back again and again. Amaretto
offers classic Italian food in warm and friendly atmosphere. Whatever time you come here,
this restaurant is always busy. The pizzas and pasta dishes are well recommended as being
tasty and excellent value for money. Great for families or big groups of friends.

The George Inn


Food: traditional British pub food

A dark and smoky pub. Come here if you want to taste traditional English fish and chips or
steak and kidney pie in a beautiful atmosphere. The pub serves a good range of beers, too.

The Ritz
Food: traditional British or fusion cuisine
Price per person: £80
This spectacular palace-style dining room is famous as one of London’s most luxurious,
romantic restaurants. It’s hard to resist splashing out on the exquisite 5 course menu. The staff
are discreet and extremely polite. It’s hardly surprising that the clients are a mixture of
celebrities, business executives and wealthy tourists. Come here for a memorable dining
experience, which will certainly do damage to your bank account!
