METHODOLOGY FOR CONSTRUCTION OF

GRANULAR SUB BASE

-1- VKLR - QME

Method Statement For
Construction of Granular Sub Base

1.1 General

This method describes the laying of Granular Sub Base over prepared Sub grade as per
drawing and Technical Specification No. 401 from Km 164.500 to Km 200.000

1.2 Temporary Works

Road diversion, drainage diversion etc shall be done as per site requirements.

1.3 Surveys
i. The surface levels of Sub grade/GSB will be recorded in accordance with clause
902.3 and tolerances will be kept within limits as specified in Table 900.1. The
measurements of surface level shall be taken on offset points fixed transversely
i.e.: 0.0, 2.25, 5.875, 9.5, 12.5 and 13.38/13.88 (end point) at every 10mts
longitudinal distance (level sheet enclosed).
ii. Reference pegs will be fixed on either side at 600 mm distance from edge lines
of GSB and at 10 mts longitudinal distances.
iii. Surface undulations will be kept within tolerance and will be checked and
rectified regularly
iv. Survey of the Sub drade layer will be done and got approved from RE by
submission of release form, prior to the commencement of GSB operation.

1.4 Utilities
Utilities like electric poles, telephone lines, cables etc are identified and being shifted.

1.5 Traffic Arrangements and Control

i. Temporary signboards will be kept all along the working zone to alert the people.
ii. Flagman will be engaged to ensure free flow of traffic whenever & wherever
required.
.

1.6 Access

Access to the site will be through existing road by providing ramps.

1.7 Work Methodology

1.7.1 Plants and Equipment

Mechanical Crusher Plant & Screening Unit, Tippers, Hydraulic Motor Grader, Vibratory
Roller, Water Tanker and Loader.

1.7.2 Construction

i. Hard stone raw material will be obtained from the mining of the top layer of
Basaltic rock formation.

ii. It shall be crushed in mechanical crusher plant and sieved through vibratory /
rotary screen.

iii. Crusher jaws will be adjusted suitably and required graded GSB material will be
obtained in a single lot.

iv. The gradation of the material will be checked and ensured as per requirement.

v. The finished Sub grade surface will be lightly sprinkled with water and rolled with
two passes of roller. Any vegetation / roots will be removed before laying of the
material.

vi. Graded GSB material shall be taken to site. Over size material found during /
after dumping shall be removed or broken by hammer manually at site.

vii. The material shall be spread on the prepared Sub grade with the help of motor
grader of adequate capacity, its blade having hydraulic controls suitable for initial
adjustment and for maintaining the required slope and grade during the
operation.

viii. Segregation will be prevented by proper mixing of the material after it is dumped
with the help of manual labour by using spades / rakes etc.

ix. Water shall be added to the spread material after checking NMC to obtain OMC
from a truck mounted water tanker having sprinkler system and suitable for
applying water uniformly at controlled quantities to variable widths. Due
allowance shall be made for evaporation losses.

x. After addition of water, material shall be processed and mixed with the help of
ripper attachment and blade of the grader until the layer is uniformly wet.

xi. Rolling shall be started immediately with the help of vibratory roller using plane
and vibratory passes. Material shall be compacted to required density. Rolling
will be done longitudinally starting from lower edge to upper edge.

xii. High spot or depressions will be corrected by removing or adding fresh material.

xiii. All loose segregated or defective areas shall be made good in part or to the full
depth of the layer as required and re-compacted.

1.7.3 Inspection and Testing

i. Continuous level checking while grading is on to ensure proper grade and slope
with the help of reference pegs.
ii. Moisture content shall be kept within tolerable limits.
iii. Rolling shall be started after OMC is achieved.
iv. All other testing will be done as per section 900 of Tech. Specifications.

1.8 Safety

i. Safety hazards will be identified both at site as well as at crusher plant.

ii. All the workers and staff will be briefed about the dangerous hazards.
iii. Trained operators will be deployed near crusher as well as at site.
iv. The height of material in open truck will be always kept less than the height of the
sides of the truck to avoid spilling of material during transport.
v. Sign boards will be kept all along the working zones to alert the people. While
working adjacent to canals / waterways, proper barricading will be done to
ensure safety.

1.9 Environmental
i. Tippers with stoppers will be used for transportation.
ii. No material will be allowed to fall during transition.
iii. Stagnant water (if any) at site will be de-watered prior to start of work at site.
iv. Dumping of GSB material will be done under controlled conditions.
v. Water will be sprinkled on GSB material prior to transportation to avoid dust
pollution during transport and to avoid dust coming to adjacent operational traffic
and on existing waterways / canals.
vi. Care will be taken to stop flowing excess water from GSB material (if any) to
canal / waterways. This will be done by using water tanker fitted with sprinkler.

1.10 Reinstatement / interphasing with next stage of work

i. Construction traffic shall not be allowed on finished surface except in emergency.

ii. Any loose pockets or defective spots will be rectified before laying WMM.
