were tightening. Employment recovery was
sluggish, and both consumers and credit
unions alike either projected a cautious
optimism for a steady recovery or a grim
pessimism about what would surely be a
slow uphill climb.
According to the National
Association of Federal Credit Unions
(NAFCU), share growth in 2010 proved
moderate following a surge the previous
year, and loan growth was disappointing.
But while the numbers of troubled and
failing banks and financial institutions in
Michigan continued to struggle, credit
unions seemed to hold their own. With
financial data up to the end of September
2010, BauerFinancial, Inc. indicated in
their star-ratings that credit unions were
showing improvement with over 65% of
federally insured credit unions rated high-
ly (5- or 4-stars) and only 5.6% poorly (2-
Stars and below). The banks were behind,
but not by much: 59% were 4-star or
above (the highest percent since the sec-
ond quarter of ’08) and 12.7% received 2-
stars or less.
As 2011 begins to gain momentum,
optimism seems to be growing. NAFCU
indicated in their latest Flash report that
expectations have improved across a
number of key areas: 57.6% of NAFCU
members indicated they expect to see fur-
ther increases in share growth; the out-
look for loans has improved with 60 per-
cent of respondents expecting increased
growth; and most responding credit
unions (45.9 percent) also expect asset
growth to rise in 2011. These respon-
dents also indicated they expect the
increase in these areas to come at aver-
ages between 5.1% and 5.4%.
While these numbers indicate opti-
mism is mostly in the majority, the more
pessimistic crowd still had a notable
presence. 16.9 percent of respondents
said they expect a decrease in share
growth, one fifth indicated they expect a
decline in asset growth and another 20%
expected a flatline for loan growth in
2011. On the issue of asset quality, most
credit unions (54.2 percent) indicated
that they expect their delinquency ratio
(loans 60 days past due) to remain about
the same in 2011, while one-third said
