Plate No. 7
1.1 Ball Bearing - utilize balls as the rolling elements. They are characterized by point of
contact between the balls and the raceways. As a rule, ball bearings rotate very quickly
but cannot support substantial loads.
1.2 Roller Bearing - are characterized by line contact, line contact offers higher load
rating than ball bearings of the same size, however the speed ability is lower than a ball
bearing due to the increased friction of a contact line.
1.3 Bearing Modulus - for any given bearing, there is a value for indicated by C for which
the coefficient of friction is at a minimum. The bearing should not be operated at this
value of bearing modulus, since a slight decrease in speed or a slight increase in
pressure will make the part of a shaft or axle that rests on bearing operate in partial
lubrication state resulting in high friction, heating and wear.
1.4 Degree of Osculation – the greater the osculation, he lower the stress; after some
relation of diameters is reached, decreasing the difference between radii of ball and race
results in increasing friction.
1.5 Sliding Bearing - is the simplest type of bearing, comprising just a bearing surface
and no rolling elements. Therefore, the journal slides over the bearing surface.
1.7 Basic Load Rating for Ball Bearing - the basic dynamic load rating of a bearing with
rotating inner ring and stationary outer ring is that load of constant magnitude and size
which a sufficiently large group of apparently identical bearings can endure for a basic
rating life of one million revolutions.
1.8 Thrust Bearings – is a particular type of rotary bearing. Like other bearings they
permit rotation between parts, but they are designed to support a predominantly axial
load.
1.9 Miner’s Equation for Variable loading – states that there are P different stress levels
and the number of cycles to failure at the 1th stress, Si, is Nfi. The number of cycles at
stress Si, is ni. The ratio of n to N is the damage fraction, the amount of life that is used
up by stress Si. When the sum of damage fractions are greater than 1.0, failure is said to
occur.
2. Give at least six (6) types of Ball Bearings. Draw and label correspondingly. Scale
1:100.
2.1 Deep Bearing
3. Identify the six (6) types of roller Bearing. Draw each type correspondingly. Scale
1:100.
3.1 Straight Roller
3.4 Needle
4. Enumerate at least five (5) advantages of rolling element bearings; fluid film
bearings.
Advantages of rolling elements bearings:
1. Low starting torque and good operating friction
2. Can support combined radial and thrust (axial) loads
3. Less sensitive to interruptions of lubrication
4. They can be arranged so as to position very precisely parts they connect, both
radially and axially.
5. Bearings are internationally standardized making for more economical designs
and easier torque.
Advantages of fluid film bearings:
1. Provide damping. Damping is required in order to pass through a critical speed.
Damping is also required to suppress instabilities and sub synchronous vibration.
2. Able to withstand shock loads and other abuse.
3. Provide electrical isolation of rotor to ground.
4. Very long life under normal load conditions.
5. Wide variety of bearing types for specific appllications
