INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Agriculture plays a vital role in our country. All

types of farming activities like watering fields and

cultivating crops are involved in conventional farming

practice and performed manually (Sukumar et al., 2018).

However, in the age of advanced electronics and technology,

the life of human being should be simpler and more

convenient, there is a need for many automated systems that

are capable of replacing or reducing human effort in their

daily activities and jobs (Duzic &Dumic, 2017). Water is

essential to human, animals and plants. With the development

of technology there is also an increase in the demand of the

food, plantation in the societies. Today agriculture uses 85

percent of water for irrigation purposes only, the wastage of

water is the major problem mostly in agriculture. In

addition, there is also a waste in fertilizer. However,

these can be reduced by using different methods developed

for conservation of water and applying precision

agriculture. There are many techniques to control or save

the wastage of water (Pavithra,2017). An automatic

irrigation system with soil moisture sensor and nutrient

analyser mobile app will be developed to optimize water use

for agricultural crops .It has sensors on soil-moisture used

as parameters if the plant needs to be watered or not.In

addition, it has a soil nutrient analyser able to detect the

ph of soil .In this proposal farmers can turn their smart

phones into a high-tech gadget able to monitor the soil

moisture, ph level and irrigation of crops.

According to Stauffer and Sphule,(2018)automated

irrigation system refers to the operation of the system with

no or just a minimum of manual intervention besides the

surveillance. An automated irrigation system have been

developed using sensors technology with Arduino to

efficiently utilize water for irrigation purpose(Stauffer &

Sphule,2018). Irrigation is the key to a successful garden.

Monitoring the soil moisture content of a crop is a way to

dtetermine if it needs to be watered and with the help of an

automatic irrigation programmed to stop when enough water

was supplied could be a great help to conserve water. Taneja

and Batia(2017) proposed an embedded system for automatic

College of Information and Communication Technology

control of irrigation. You can water your plants regularly

when you are out for vacation. The system has wireless

sensor network for real-time sensing and control of an

irrigation system. This system provides uniform and required

level of water for the garden and it avoids water wastage.

This system is intended to create an automated irrigation

mechanism which turns the pumping motor ON and OFF on

detecting the dampness content of the earth. The system has

soil moisture sensor inserted into the soil of the plants

and a water level sensor placed in a water container from

where water will be pumped to plants for irrigation. An

algorithm has been build out with threshold values of soil

moisture sensor to control the water quantity in soil and

also a water level sensor has been implemented to measure

the water level in tank (Taneja & Batia,2017).

Nowadays it’s a challenge to improve development of

plant in respect of its growth and to reduce costs which

leads to an innovative idea of using an automated irrigation

system which will further help in better management of water

and human resources. Agriculture plays a vital role in our

country. Over fertilization may leads to the inferior

quality of the crop production. The measurement of Soil

REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES

College of Information and Communication Technology

nutrients is greatly required for better plant growth and

fertilization. A key in soil testing is to determine the

amount of nutrients present in soil. PH is commonly measured

to monitor the soil fertility one of the most important

informative soil parameter to detect the soil fertility

(Sukumar et al.,2018).

The use of manual irrigation consumes a lot of time and

needs monitoring frequently. However, automatic systems can

be programmed and will automatically on or off depending on

the parameter to be controlled. This proposed project

proposal Automatic Irrigation System with Soil Moisture

Sensor and Nutrient Analyzer Mobile App is a great

innovation in agriculture technology. It seeks in enhancing

conservation of resources and minimizing labour .It will

help the farmers or gardeners save time and effort. In

addition it can help them monitor their crops properly in

order to increase productivity and produce healthy

vegetation.

and visual basic for interfacing the hardware and mobile

phone. Protel or workbench schematic software is used for

designing the circuit diagram for this project and express

prefabricated circuit board (PCB) software is used for

designing. Since PCB making is a big process and involves a

number of machineries which are expensive and was therefore

outsourced. Using DTMF 8870 IC will act as an interface

between the user and the system as it is a receiver which

links the GSM network, the microcontroller pic16f73 contains

the software which states the conditions of the system which

can be displayed in a liquid crystal display and transmitted

via mobile phone to the dual tone multiple frequency

receiver which is part of the control system in the farm.

New technologies help in increasing productivity with use of

less manpower as well as conservation of water in the

process.

Vagulabranan et al.,(2016) conducted a study on

domain of farming, utilization of appropriate means of

irrigation is significant. The benefit of employing these

techniques is to decrease human interference and still make

certain appropriate irrigation. This automated irrigation

project brings into play an Arduino board ATmega328 micro-

controller and is programmed to collect the input signal of

changeable moisture circumstances of the earth via moisture

detecting system.

Devika et al.,(2014) conducted a study on Arduino based

Plant Watering System. This project uses watering sprinkler

system because it can water the plants located in the pots.

This project uses Arduino board, which consists of ATmega328

microcontroller. It is programmed in such a way that it will

sense the moisture level of the plants and supply the water

if required. This type of system is often used for general

plant care, as part of caring for small and large gardens.

Normally, the plants need to be watered twice daily, morning

and evening. So, the microcontroller has to be coded to

water the plants in the greenhouse about two times per day.

People enjoy plants, their benefits and the feeling related

to nurturing them. However for most people it becomes

challenging to keep them healthy and alive. To accommodate

this challenge we have developed a prototype, which makes a

plant more self-sufficient, watering itself from a large

water tank and providing itself with artificial sunlight.

The pro-To type reports status of its current conditions and

also reminds the user to refill the water tank. The system

automation is designed to be assistive to the user. We hope

that through this prototype people will enjoy having plants

without the challenges related to absent or forgetfulness.

Taneja (2017),conducted a study on Automatic

irrigation system using Arduino UNO. This project requires

Arduino board having inbuilt ATMega328 microcontroller.

This project is need of the hour to convert manual

irrigation into an automated irrigation which with the

help of soil moisture sensor will detect dankness content

of soil leading to turn ON/OFF of pumping motor. Human

efforts can be reduced using this technique and increase

saving of water by efficiently irrigating the plants. The

design has been made with better resource management and

low power consumption. This project brings into play a

micro-controller which is of 8051 family, this

moisture sensors. As the microcontroller starts obtaining

the signals, it creates an output that forces a relay for

running the water pumping motor. An LCD screen is also

linked to the micro-controller to show moisture conditions

of the soil and water pump. The water level sensor is used

to detect the level of tank so that tank contains

efficient water to transfer into crops.

of the soil thus making the soil testing procedure easier.

Harshani et al.,(2017) conducted a research on

Monitoring the Nutrient Level for Efficient Crop

Productivity Using IOT.This paper introduces internet of

things which connects the whole world through devices such

as sensors, actuators and other embedded devices. Internet

of things can be used in agriculture for efficient crop

production. India is very much popular for crop production.

As day by day the population increases, production of crops

has to be increased. To produce more efficient crops, soil

moisture, temperature and soil pH is more important. Crop

growth is based on soil nutrient level and its moisture

level. Hence the nutrient level has to be monitored

frequently for crop production. For this there are various

techniques for nutrient detection. In this paper, the

nutrient level and moisture level of soil are detected and

monitored using soil moisture sensor and pH sensor along

with that temperature sensor and a microcontroller is used.

Project Description

The Automatic Irrigation System with Soil Moisture Sensor

and Nutrient Analyzer Mobile App is an automatic irrigation

system based on mobile application that will use an Arduino

microcontroller, water motor, power supply, mobile phone,

wifi-module, soil moisture sensor and soil nutrient analyzer

to help a famer to control and monitor a farm. This system

will will be a prototype model for an automatic irrigation

system and and a great has a goal to replace the traditional

watering system and detecting of soil fertility and nutrient

into a high tech way. In the proposed system the user can

monitor the amount of soil moisture ,and the soil nutrient

by determining the ph of soil. A soil ph sensor and soil

moisture sensor specifically designed for Arduino

microcontroller will be programmed in order determine the

amount of ph of soil and moisture. The plants will

automatically be irrigated based on the soil moisture

level. The system uses a wifi module so that the data

gathered from the parameters send readings across a network

gateway which sends all of this data to a central web

service which uses an intelligent software application to

automatically analyse the data and act upon it by

selectively activating irrigation nodes only in the areas

required. This data is fed into an intelligent software

package that uses intelligent agents in order to act upon

the information they are receiving from the sensors. The

outputs of the level of soil moisture and soil ph is

presented to the user on a Smartphone App.

Development Process

Developing the Automatic Irrigation System with soil

moisture sensor and nutrient analyzer mobile app will be

difficult to do because it requires a series of tests and

revision before it operates. Therefore, it needs a useful

tool in building an integrated system. In developing this

system Rapid Application Development model will be used. It

is a type of incremental. Rapid application development

(RAD) describes a method of software development which

heavily emphasizes rapid prototyping and iterative

delivery. The RAD model is, therefore, a sharp alternative

to the typical waterfall development model, which often

focuses largely on planning and sequential design

practices. Rapid application development is a software

development methodology that uses minimal planning in favor

of rapid prototyping. A prototype is a working model that

is functionally equivalent to a component of the product.

In the RAD model, the functional modules are developed in

parallel as prototypes and are integrated to make the

complete product for faster product delivery. Since there

is

no detailed preplanning, it makes it easier to incorporate

the changes within the development process.

RAD projects follow iterative and incremental model and

have small teams comprising of developers, domain experts,

customer representatives and other IT resources working

progressively on their component or prototype.
