Note: This procedure was prepared using a 1.000” OD x BWG21 Admiralty Brass Tube, scanned
with a TEA-226-015-N20 probe (22.6 mm, low frequency range), using the Differential channel
only. The absolute channel can also be used in a similar procedure, provided the proper adaptor
and balance loads are used.

2. Frequency 1 Setup.
2.1. Hit the MAIN button, then the FREQ 1 SETUP key.
2.2. Adjust the FREQ key to the “prime frequency” (higest frequency for the tube inspection
as per ASME section 5, article 8). The frequency chosen to write that procedure was F1
= 64 kHz.
2.3. Pre-set H GAIN and V GAIN keys to be 65.0 dB.
2.4. NULL the probe in a good area of the tube. Note: repeat NULL operation when needed
during that procedure – it is normal to NULL frequently. Using a remote footswitch
when calibrating or inspecting is highly recommended.
2.5. Run the probe over the Thru-wall hole defect, and adjust the GAIN key in order to
obtain a signal that spread between 8 and 10 divisions (see next image).
2.6. Adjust the ANGLE in order to have the thru-wall hole signal set at approximately 40° on
the screen. Note: the probe motion can also be set horizontal. NOTE 2: the primary
look of the thru-wall signal (when pulling the probe) is normally set to go down on the
screen. See next image.

3.2. Hit the MEM button, and hit the DATA SETUP key.
3.3. Set the REF MEM key to the latest stored data – which should be the support signal.

4. Frequency 2 Setup.
4.1. Hit the DISP button, and set the MAIN DISP key to F2.
4.2. Hit the MAIN button, and set the FREQ2 SETUP key.
4.3. Adjust the FREQ2 key to be a fraction of the prime frequency. The quarter or even the
eighth (if possible) of the prime frequency is recommended. As example, to write the
current procedure, F1 = 64 kHz and F2 = 8 kHz.
4.4. Preset both the H GAIN2 and V GAIN2 to 65 dB.
4.5. Scan over the support plate, and adjust both the GAIN2 and ANGLE 2 keys in order to fit
the reference signal (in background color) as best as can be (see next image).

4.6. Adjust the H GAIN2 key in order to improve the fit over the reference signal. Fine tune
the V GAIN 2 and ANGLE2 as needed. See next image.

5. Final Mixing.
5.1. Hit the DISP button, and set the MAIN DSP key to F1.
5.2. Set the 2ND DISP key to F1+F2.
5.3. Scan over the support ring. The support should be relatively cancelled on the right
display. If the opposite occurs, set the 2ND DISP key to F1-F2. That is highly possible, as
one can easily set the phase of the support signal at F2 to be same as the support signal
on F1. See next image.
Note: it is normal to obtain a residual support ring signal. The quality of the mixing
depends a lot on the attention paid during the set-up and the dimensions / material of
the support ring, and works for ferromagnetic supports only.

5.4. If the support is not exactly cancelled, repeat above steps (particularly steps 4.5 and
4.6) or try other frequencies. The last image shows some OD flat bottom holes plus a
support signal with F1 on left and the MIX (sum or subtraction) on the right.
5.5. If desired, change the gain of the MIX channel. Hit the SETUP button, then INST SETUP
key, and modify the HMIX GN and VMIX GN keys to improve signal representation.
