About the Program
This seminar is designed for
lawyers who handle appeals
regularly, those who do so only
occasionally, and those who never
have.
Topics include the nuts and bolts
of handling federal, civil, and criminal
appeals. Experienced lawyers will
discuss the fundamentals of handling
all aspects of an appeal and provide
useful strategies for being effective
in briefing and arguing. They will also
discuss the critical issues of whether
to appeal in the first place, the way
preservation of issues and the
standard of review affect an appeal,
and the role of motions and writs.
Appellate judges will interact with
the audience providing useful advice
and comments on what they like and
dislike as far as briefing and oral
argument. The appellate court clerks
will provide useful information on
local rules, practices and e-filing.
Topics include both civil and
criminal appeals and both state and
federal practice.
