TYPES OF NURSERY

1. PROPAGATION NURSERIES
 Concentrate on plant production.
 Producing plant from seeds, cutting or other vegetative propagation (tissue culture,
grafting, budding, layering)
 Responsible for the introduction of new species and cultivars to nursery industry.
 Have wide range of crop or have own specialized crops.

2. WHOLESALE NURSERY
o Grow in bulk and sell their plants and flowers to retail and mail-order nurseries,
landscapers and building contractors.
o Key decisions include:
 what you will grow
 who your customers will be, and
 how you plan to deliver plants to your customers
o Choose to grow a limited variety, but then grow them in large numbers.
o Need more land and a larger work force
o Sell rooted cutting (liners) that ready for transplanting into containers or field.
o Sell the liners to both wholesalers and retailers, who grow them to a larger size before
selling them to their customers
o Include tissue cultured plants, rooted cuttings, and seedlings.

3. RETAIL NURSERIES

Bought a plant from a wholesale nursery than sell plants to retail customers.

Grow some of their own plants, others simply purchase plants from a wholesaler and
then resell them.

Should focus on defining their customer base, which will lead them to what they
should sell

High-profit items include larger plants and accessories like birdbaths, window boxes,
gardening tools, and accessories

Sometimes they also provide services like replanting into decorative containers, and
making custom planters.

4. MAIL-ORDER NURSERIES
 Sell their products through the mail.
 Deliver products that their merchandise via mail or by bus.
 Their contacts with customers is primarily through catalogues and online
advertisement
 Some of them grow their own plants, and still others buy their inventory from
wholesalers and then resell.
 Potted materials are grown and shipped in a lightweight medium to reduce shipping
costs.

5. GARDEN CENTERS/ HOME CENTERS
 Similar to retail nursery, but much larger.
 Found only in big cities.
 Large selection, large quantities available.
 Often does not grow own stock.
 Have evolved to become a leisure destination with a play centre for children,
restaurants and other activities designed to improve the shopping experience and
increase the time spent at the centre.
 Normally supply fertilizers, potting medium, pots, gardening tools and books for their
customers.
 Other services provide by garden centres:

V. Marking requirements

 In addition to the sale of plant material and plant related supplies certain nurseries
provide their customers with additional services.
 These include:
 Total landscape service
 Home maintenance service
 Problem-solving service
 Offer not only garden supplies, but also leisure buildings, garden furniture, products
for pets and fish keeping, and Giftware and home products.
 Many larger centre also have florist departments, wild bird care and their own
restaurants.
