(a) St. Anne’s bought a photocopy machine for R 450 000. They plan to replace this machine with a
new one in 5 years’ time. The rate of reducing balance depreciation is 10% per year while the
cost of a new machine is expected to increase by 7,5% per year.

The school sets up a sinking fund to cover the cost of a new machine. The old machine will be
traded in.

(1) Calculate the amount of money the school will have to save to buy a new printing machine
bearing in mind that they will get the trade in value for the old machine. (5)

(2) Monthly payments are made into a savings account paying 12% interest per annum
compounded monthly. Calculate the monthly payments the school will have to make if
the last payment in the 5 year period collects interest. (5)

(b) A student borrows R 9500 for a new laptop. To repay the bank, she makes a loan payment of
R 353,05 on the last day of each month. The bank charges a compound interest rate of 20% p.a.
compounded monthly.
How long will it take her to repay the loan? (5)

Some require that the largest rectangular box shape has a length no longer than 55 cm and the total
sum of the length, breadth and height together not being more than 115 cm.
