 Chapter 1 Introduction

Overview
Samsung eNB supports Remote Radio Unit. RRU is a remote radio unit mounted
near an antenna. Among various units in Samsung eNB, this document is for RRU
which supports 2Tx and 2Rx paths with 80W output power.

Architecture
RRU is an integrated RF unit consisting of a transceiver board, power amplifiers
and a filter in an outdoor enclosure. RRU has two downlink and two uplink paths,
respectively. Figure 1 shows RRU architecture.

In the downlink path, the transceiver board converts and modulates baseband
signals received from the digital unit to analog radio frequency signals. Power
amplifiers amplify analog radio signals into high-power radio signals transmitted
to the antenna through an antenna port of the filter.

In the uplink path, the radio signals received through the filter are amplified by a
LNA (Low Noise Amplifier). The amplified radio signals are down-converted and
formatted for CPRI interface in the transceiver board and transmitted to digital
unit.

High Throughput RFB01A-08A supports up to 2 carriers with 35MHz channel bandwidth.
RFB01A-08A provides 2x2 MIMO functionalities.
Energy Saving Features Dynamic Power Amplifier bias on/off function turns the power off when there
is no traffic, ensuring that energy is not wasted.
Environmental Tolerance RFB01A-08A has small size of under 12 liters / 15 kg and can work in the
wide range of operating temperature from -40℃ to 50℃ and meet IP65,
which helps operators deploy their network in severe environments.
In addition, the radio unit offers an innovative design with semi-assembled
components available thus making the bracket installation very easy.

Details

Product Appearance
RRU has the rectangular box outlook. RRU weighs about 15 kg with 12
liters. Figure 2 shows the physical appearance of RRU and Figure 3
shows external ports in the bottom side.

Function Description
RFB01A-08A provides functions as below.

 Signal amplification

Amplify transmitted RF signals to high power, and amplify received RF

signals with a low noise amplifier.

 RF signal filtering

Suppress unwanted spurious signals. RRU meets spurious emission

limits with TS36.104 (LTE), 3GPP.

 Transmitted signal power control

Manage the transmitted signal power for RF coverage and cell edge
throughput.

 Transmitted/Received signal detection

Detect the signal strength (TSSI/RSSI)

※ TSSI (Transmitted Signal Strength Indicator), RSSI (Received Signal

Strength Indicator)

 Fault Detection

Detect fault alarms such as over power, VSWR, CPRI fail, Clock fail
etc for checking the RRU status.

 RET (Remote Electrical Tilting)

Control the beam tilting angle of the external antenna. The interface
specification shall comply with the AISG v.2.0

※ AISG, i.e. Antenna Interface Standards Group Standard is the control

interface for antenna line devices.

 UDA (User Defined Alarm) - optional

Provide alarm interface of external equipment.
