Hong Kong Interschool Debating Championship 2011

Dear Sirs,

I write to you on behalf of the Hong Kong Interschool Debating Organization (HKIDO) to
formally invite your participation in the inaugural Hong Kong Interschool Debating Cham-
pionship (HKIDC), which is an unprecedented student – pioneered championship.

Formed by a corps of veteran debaters and advised by numerous past Hong Kong De-
bating Team members and coaches, the HKIDO is a non-profit student based organiza-
tion which was formed in response to the lack of English debating tournaments in Hong
Hong Kong Interschool
Debating Organization Kong which go beyond ‘thinking local’. Though we appreciate other existing tourna-
ments, we are specifically responding to a dearth of competitions which target regional

As a result, the new HKIDC was formed, to provide a championship whereby students
from all participating schools will have opportunities to debate in a fair, competitive and
challenging environment on many different topics ranging from politics to the environ-
ment.

In this age of globalization, we believe that Hong Kong students need to have a basic
international understanding in order to be more competitive global citizens. The HKIDC
deliberately aims at broadening debaters’ knowledge bases through debating issues of
international importance and relevance.

Furthermore, we also believe that the ability to formulate arguments in attack or defence
of an issue quickly is an extremely important skill. Spontaneous delivery, poise under
pressure and reducing reliance on prepared material are all emphasized in the HKIDC
because in all rounds we have a ‘free debate session’ which allows instantaneous re-
sponses and arguments. Moreover, the 3rd preliminary round will also be an impromptu
motion, which will challenge participants to formulate cases based on their own knowl-
edge and ability, instead of the usual Hong Kong practice of overly focusing on research.

Just as any other championship, the success of the HKIDC depends on the quality of its
participants. With three guaranteed rounds for each participating school, involving four
debaters each time, we sincerely hope that you can help us make the HKIDC the best it
can be with your enrolment.

Further details of the competition are attached in the information package whilst updates
and details will also be posted onto our website at http://hkido.wordpress.com. For more
enquiries please feel free to contact our President, Howard Yeung at 9811 7085, or to

Sincerely yours,

Howard Yeung President
