 Read the following story.

Nunavut

Some people who own dogs may chuckle at the thought of their pet going out to work
each day. But for the people of Nunavut, Canada, the idea is not unusual. The Inuit use
dogs for work and for play. In a place where winter can last nine months and temperatures
average 22 F, cars are not the best means of transportation. If you lived along the coast of
Cambridge Bay and had a friend in Grise Fjord in the north, you might make the visit by
dog sled.

The two most popular breeds of dog in the coldest place in Canada are the Canadian
dog and the Siberian husky. The Inuit name for the Canadian dog is qimmiq.
Long ago, Canadian dogs assisted explorers. Today, they are used for pulling heavy
supply sleds and for hunting seals, musk oxen, and polar bears. These powerful dogs
have a mixed heritage of Labrador and Greenland dogs. They are also related to the
malamute, the Samoyed, and the Siberian husky.

Canadian dogs are medium sized, weighing sixty to one hundred pounds. They are
incredibly strong and rugged for their size. They are bred in a variety of color combinations
mixing black, white, tan, and grey. Their heads are wedge shaped. Their paws are huge,
with fat, thick pads. They have upward-curved tails and magnificent coats. Their thick,
dense fur consists of long, coarse outer hairs and a fleecy undercoat called wool. This
special fur holds in body heat, allowing these hardy dogs to sleep outdoors comfortably
when it is -50F. The tail is bushy and has a purpose. When a dog curls up to sleep, the tail
lies across its delicate nose, eyes, and muzzle, keeping these sensitive areas warm.

Dog teams carrying a heavy sled over rough ice and snow average 25 miles per day.
Locals say these intelligent, sturdy dogs are so clever they can catch a two-foot-long fish
and eat it in two bites. Their special coats, strength, instinct for survival, and outstanding
intelligence permit these dogs to work in one of the harshest climates on the planet.

Most Inuit Siberian huskies are used strictly as sport dogs. The Siberian husky is smaller,
more streamlined, and faster than the Canadian dog. It too has a double-layered coat, but
the fur is smoother and neater in appearance than that of the Canadian dog. The Siberian
husky is grey, black, or tan with lot of markings around the head. The head is round and
the legs longer than the Canadian dog’s. The friendly husky can have pale blue eyes or
even one blue eye and one brown eye. This dog is built for speed rather than endurance.
Teams of Siberian huskies have pulled some of the faster sled speeds ever recorded.

Over time, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles have replaced many dog-driven sleds,
but some Inuit still prefer to travel by dog sleds.
