SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Dextra offers a full range of tie rods to suit any waterfront anchorage situation: whether it is to anchor
a harbour dock, quay, wharf, jetty or river embankment. Whether the waterfront wall is made of
diaphragm walls, sheet piles or concrete piles, we can design the optimum system for your site
conditions.

BENEFITS

 Higher steel grades equate to less tonnage and thus ease of installation.

 Alignment adjustment and differential settlement is handled by swivel nuts, fork and spade
joints, ball cages or captive nuts.

 Length adjustment may be accomplished either by providing couplers or turnbuckles along

the rod length.

 Sagging correction can be achieved through turnbuckles or by turning the bar itself.

 Dextra supplies waling beams, sheet piles, and steel piles upon request.

DESIGN
The DEXTRA tie rod system is calculated as per;
ANSI/AISC 360-05 Load & Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Allowable Stress Design methods.

LOAD CAPACITY
Table 2, below, sums up the scope of our standard tie rod. Other dimensions may be proposed upon
request. The load capacities of bars indicated here are considered at the cross sectional area of the
thread instead of the full bar diameter.
The user should be cautious when selecting sizes. The required load should be compared to the
capacity of the designated sizes in Table 2.

SURFACE FINISH
DEXTRA tie rods are normally delivered without any specific surface finish when considering
sacrificial thickness as specified in EN 1993 Part 5. Otherwise paint, galvanization or bituminous tape
is also available upon request.

Paint protection is applied with a single coat of epoxy paint with a minimum dry film thickness of 250
microns. The top coat of epoxy paint should be applied by the contractor after final assembly and
tightening.

Hot-dip galvanization is performed as per B.S. 729 or ASTM A123 with a minimum thickness of 100
microns. Internal threads of components are not galvanized. Galvanization is removed from external
threads by brushing.

When bituminous tape is required, it is wrapped at DEXTRA’s factory and/or it can be delivered
separately with tie rods, depending upon customer’s requirements. The overlapping of the tape should
be a minimum of 50%.

LENGTH
For projects located outside Thailand, individual lengths of either 5.80m or 11.80m are recommended
in order to facilitate containerized shipments. The length of bars can be extended by a coupler and
turnbuckle. The turnbuckle can adjust the length with tolerance +/- 50mm. The standard thread length
is equal to the bar diameter with a tolerance of -0/+25 mm. A shorter or longer thread length can be
manufactured upon request.

ACCESSORIES
Various types of accessories and their functions are summarized in Tables 3 and 4 below. They
facilitate the anchoring system and connection of the bars. As bar lengths are limited by mills,
transportation and handling constraints, couplers are used to connect them. Turnbuckles are used to
assist with assembly and removal of sagging. Up to Ø48, turnbuckles are turned by a pipe wrench.
From Ø52 upwards, turnbuckles are manufactured with a centered hole so they can be turned with a
½” rod. Swivel nuts and swivel bearing plates are available for accommodating bar end rotation.

OPTIONAL COMPONENTS

 Tubular concrete/steel pile: For a high section modulus sheet pile wall, composite
concrete/steel tubular piles are almost always the option on the main wall. Bearing plates and
nuts embedded in concrete are available to connect the tie rod to the pile. The bar embedded
in concrete is always a short bar, and thus will not obstruct parallel construction operations.
The continuation bars may be connected by a coupler, turnbuckle or a fork and spade clevis.
The fork and spade clevis option will provide pivotal capabilities.

Anchorage in tubular pile

Alternatively, ball cage and captive nut systems can also be applied. The ball cage system
allows up to 10 degrees of rotation, while the captive nut system can accommodate up to 5
degrees. These systems ease the installation process with reduced size and weight when
compared to a fork and spade clevis solution. Ball cage and captive nut systems are
recommended for larger diameter tie rods above M60. The following are illustrations of both
systems.

Ball Cage Captive Nut

Note: Additional reinforcing bars should be provided to maintain the load capacity at the
location of the ball cage or captive nut.

Dextra
 I-section pile: When the wall is made of an I-section pile, the tie rod can be connected
through the use of a T-plate. This T-plate is inserted through a slot cut on a pile flange, so that
the tie rod can be connected with this T-plate through the use of a pin.

- Single tie rod: a single tie rod can be connected to an I-section pile by using the
combination of spade clevis and T-plate as illustrated in the figures below

- Dual tie rods: two tie rods can be connected to an I-section pile by using fork clevises
and T-plates as illustrated below. Stiffener plates, welded or bolted on a pile flange,
may be required to increase the bending resistance of the flange.

 Waling beam: Dextra can supply waling beams in accordance with Standard JIS, ASTM, BS,
AS and EN Standard or other Standards upon request.

 Sheet pile: Dextra can supply sheet piles in accordance with Standard ASTM, BS, and EN
Standard or other Standards upon request.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
Every component of the DEXTRA tie rod system is manufactured under consistent
quality assurance as required by ISO 9001 certification. Load-bearing components
such as nuts, forks, spades and pins are all individually marked with a lot number that
enables full traceability. Traceability of bars is achieved through both the mill
certificates and the certificates of compliance provided together with the delivery
notes. The customer is advised to keep a proper record of the location of each batch.

A Certificate of Compliance with related quality and test reports are provided with
each delivery.

A final dossier comprised of all drawings, calculation notes, and quality documents can be provided at
the end of the supply period, upon request.

PACKING
The standard packing is designed for sea freight shipments in closed containers. Tie rods are packed
in standard bundles on disposable steel racking systems to facilitate handling and prevent damage
during transportation; including protection of threaded ends. Accessories may be packed separately
or attached with the tie rods on a case by case basis. All items are sprayed or dipped with water
soluble rust inhibitor adequate for enclosed short-term storage (1-3 months). Customized packing,
such as painting or bituminous tape wrapping, can be included upon request subject to an additional
charge.

TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING AND STORAGE

Dextra tie rods should be transported in containers or covered vehicles. Do not drag or drop the rods
over sharp edges, steel or concrete. For bars longer than 6 m, a spreader bar should be used for
lifting to prevent the bars from sagging. They must be stored in a dry, covered and well-ventilated
area, on wooden sleepers and not directly on the ground. Tie rods that are galvanized or painted must
be lifted with nylon slings only.

RESTRICTIONS OF USE
The Dextra tie rods system should not be used in locations where compression stresses are
predominant unless approved by the Project Engineer.

HANDLING AND INSTALLATION EQUIPMENT

Besides cranes and temporary supports for handling, there are no specific tools required to install
Dextra tie rods apart from the following;
 Pipe wrench
 Friction reducing grease.

INSTALLATION SEQUENCE
Ensure that site conditions allow for proper installation of Dextra tie rods..

Check the condition of the tie rods and accessories upon receipt at site.

Prepare temporary support systems such as sand bags, wooden pads or steel frames.

Install the selected anchoring accessory in the wall (sheet pile, secant pile, bored pile, diaphragm
