Other Smart Remote Features

The Smart Remote has several additional features that put both information
and remote control at your fingertips.
click365 News and Interactive Services
The Smart Remote via the click365 service from TV Compass Inc. provides
updated news, weather, sports, and other information on the remote’s LCD
screen through the click365 icon in the lower right corner of the Home
Screen. Just press the soft key under this icon to access the news screens—no
computer necessary!
Learning Functionality
The Smart Remote can learn commands from your original remote controls
you already use—see page 15 for more information.
Power Saver
The Smart Remote’s screen automatically dims if you haven’t pressed a key
in the last 20 seconds. This conserves the remote’s power so that you don’t
have to charge it as often. The remote’s screen automatically turns off after a
minute and 20 seconds of inactivity. To bring the screen up again, just press
any key on the remote.
Using the Smart Remote with Wireless Networks
The Smart Remote automatically detects the wireless networks in your area
that broadcast their identities and lists them on screen. The remote works
with secure and open networks. If your network is secure, you’ll need to
enter a password to use it.

Managing Devices

Adding a Device
The Smart Remote can control a virtually unlimited number of devices in
your home. To start controlling a new device, all you have to know is your
device’s brand. Then, all you have to do is follow the directions here to get
started. The remote’s on-screen directions take you the rest of the way.
To add a new device to the remote:
1. Press the HOME key. The Home Screen appears.
2. Use the arrow keys to highlight the Devices icon and press SEL. The
Devices menu appears.
3. Press the Options soft key and select Add/manage devices. The Devices
Setup menu appears

4. Press the Options soft key and select New Device. The first New Device
menu appears.
NOTE: The rest of the menu screens you see as you’re adding the device give you
on-screen instructions to guide you along the process. To scroll through a page of
instructions, press the down arrow key on the remote. To clear the instructions from
the screen, press the Ok soft key.
5. Use the arrow keys to highlight the type of device you want to add. Press
the SEL key to select it.
NOTE: If you don’t see the type of device you’re trying to add in the list, you can have
the remote learn all of the original device remote’s keys. See “Creating and Learning a
New Device” on page 17 for more information.
6. Use the arrow keys to highlight your brand and press SEL.

Tips:
• Use the number keys on the bottom of the remote to enter the first letter of the
brand of the device your trying to add. These keys work like they would to enter a
text message on a mobile phone. This skips through the list to that letter. You can
narrow the list further by entering additional letters.
• If you don’t see your component’s brand in the list, press the Options soft key, highlight
Search all brands, and press SEL. This option searches the entire database for a match.

Chapter 2 13
Managing Devices

7. The Manual Search lets you test each code set on your own to find the
best one for your device.
Use the right and left arrows to scroll through the available codes and
find the one with the command set that most closely matches those on
the original remote.
Press the keys on the Smart Remote associated with the commands
listed for that code to determine if the remote is controlling the device.
For example, if you press the (power) key on the remote, the device
should turn on or off.
If the commands for major functions such as power, channel, and
volume work, continue with step 8. If these types of commands do not
work, continue to test other command sets until these functions work
using the Smart Remote.
NOTE: If the command set works major functions such as power, volume, and
channel but does not work other key functions you can have the Smart Remote learn
those key functions. See sections “Learning Hard Keys” on page 15 and “Learning
Soft Keys” on page 16. If none of the command sets work for the selected brand, you
can create a new device. See “Creating and Learning a New Device” on page 17.

Using Auto Code Search

The Smart Remote offers an Auto Code Search method for finding a code
that works with your device. To perform an Auto Code Search:
1. In the first code screen, press the Options soft key and select start
search.
2. Press the Stop soft key when your device turns on or off.
3. Test the Smart Remote’s power, volume, channel, and digit keys with
your device (or other relevant keys for your device). If they work, press
SEL to save the code.
4. Press the Yes soft key to confirm.

8. Press SEL to save the current code. The device is added. If you want to
keep the name the Smart Remote suggests, press the OK soft key. If you
want to change the name, use the ENTER key to delete characters. Then
use the number keys like texting on your cell phone to enter letters and
numbers

14 Chapter 2
Managing Devices

Learning New Keys

The Smart Remote can learn keys from your other remotes. Imagine, for
example, that your DVD player’s original remote control has a SHUFFLE
key. The Smart Remote can “learn” what that key does from the DVD
player’s original remote. You can tell the Smart Remote to store the
SHUFFLE key’s function to an existing hard key, or you can store the
function as a soft key shown on the Smart Remote’s LCD screen.
Learning Hard Keys
You can assign commands to physical keys on the Smart Remote. These
physical keys are called hard keys, like the number keys, MUTE, and CH up
and down. If the Smart Remote is not performing an operation assigned to
a hard key properly or a hard key does not exist on the Smart Remote, you
may have to learn one or more hard keys from the device’s original remote.
To learn hard keys:
1. Press the HOME key. The Home Screen appears.
2. Highlight the Devices icon and press SEL. The Devices menu appears.
3. Press the Options soft key and select Add/manage devices. The Devices
Setup menu appears.

4. Highlight the device that uses the key you want the remote to learn and
press SEL.
5. Use the arrow keys to highlight Commands and press SEL. The
Command Setup menu appears.
6. Press the Options soft key. Highlight Learn... and press SEL.
7. Highlight Learn hard key(s) and press SEL.
8. On the Smart Remote, press the key that you would like to use for
learned function.

9. Position the device’s original remote a few inches from the infrared
window as shown below.

NOTE: Learning distance should be from 2.5 to 6 inches between the two remotes.
Do not put the two remotes so they are touching or under a half inch apart. Place the
remotes directly in front of each other and on a flat surface.

Chapter 2 15
Managing Devices

10. Press the key on the device’s original remote.

The Smart Remote notifies you when your key is successfully learned,
either while you’re pressing the key or once you’ve released it. To learn
additional hard keys, repeat steps 8 - 10.
11. Press the Done soft key on the Smart Remote if you are finished learning
hard keys.
Learning Soft Keys
Soft keys are additional keys that do not have a physical key equivalent on
the Smart Remote. The Smart Remote can learn these keys from the device’s
original remote. For example, if your television’s remote control has a Closed
Captioning key, the Smart Remote can “learn” what that key does from
the television’s remote. You can tell the Smart Remote to store the Closed
Captioning key’s function as a soft key.
To learn soft keys:
1. Press the HOME key. The Home screen appears.
2. Highlight the Devices icon and press SEL. The Devices screen appears.
3. Press the options soft key and select Add/manage devices. The Setup
Devices menu appears.
4. Highlight the device that uses the key you want to learn and press SEL.
5. Use the arrow keys to highlight Commands and press SEL. The
Command Setup screen appears.

6. Press the Options soft key and select Learn...

NOTE: If learning a pre-defined soft key, select the Learn option for that key from
the list and press the SEL key. Then continue with step 8.
7. Highlight Learn new command(s) and press SEL.
Based on the device selected, a list of default names appears. You can
either select one of the default names or choose <enter name>... and
create your own name for the soft key using the numeric keys.

16 Chapter 2

8. Once you’ve either created a name for the key or selected one from the
list, press SEL.

Chapter 3
Managing OneTouch Activities
Managing OneTouch Activities

Managing One Touch Activities

The Smart Remote lets you create and edit programmed sequences for multi-
step actions you do routinely in your home entertainment system. These
programmed sequences are called “OneTouch Activities”.
For example, to watch cable television with surround sound, normally you
would have to turn on the television, cable box, and the audio amplifier one
by one, changing the active device each time. Using the Smart Remote, you
can program this activity once and run it automatically after that.

Creating a OneTouch Activity

Guided Activities are sequences the Smart Remote performs for you to get your
devices ready to watch or listen a particular kind of programming. For example,
if you want to watch satellite television, you can configure a Guided Activity that
sets up your devices for watching satellite television.
To create a guided activity:
1. Press the HOME key. The Home screen appears.
2. Highlight the Activities icon and press SEL.
3. Press the Options soft key and select Add/manage activities.
4. Press the Options soft key and select New activity.
5. Highlight Watch... or Listen... and press SEL.

6. Highlight the device you want to watch or listen to and press SEL. For
example, if you want to watch a DVD, highlight DVD and press SEL.
7. If you’re creating a Listen activity, go to the next step.
If you’re creating a Watch activity, highlight your display device and
press SEL. For example, if you watch your DVD player on your TV,
highlight TV and press SEL.
8. Highlight your audio playback device and press SEL. For example, if you
listen to the audio from your DVD player through your audio receiver,
highlight Audio Receiver and press SEL.
9. Press the Ok soft key to accept the Smart Remote’s suggested name for
this activity. To edit this name use the arrow keys to position the cursor,
then use the ENTER key to delete, the number keys to type, and the
INPUT key to toggle between upper and lower case letters.

24 Chapter 3
Managing OneTouch Activities

OneTouch Setup Wizard Hints

The OneTouch Setup Wizard takes you through the activity with the remote. This allows the Smart Remote to learn
how you have your system connected.
Take your time and follow the on-screen prompts to teach the remote how you’ve got your system configured.
The remote offers audio cues as well, to tell you when an action is required or when it’s sending a command.
Notes
• If you don’t want to set up the OneTouch activity now, just press the No soft key. The Smart Remote will ask you to set up the OneTouch
activity the next time you play the activity.
• The Smart Remote offers two methods of activities—OneTouch performs all the steps automatically once you’ve taught the remote
about your setup. Guided Activities take you through on-screen prompts to perform the activity each time you play it. The Smart
Remote does OneTouch activities by default. See the section on Guided Activities later in this chapter for information about
changing to Guided Activities.

First, the remote wants to make sure all the devices in this activity are turned
on.
TIPS:
1. Make sure the remote is pointed at the device you’re trying to turn on.
2. Wait a few seconds between key presses. It takes a few seconds for the
remote to turn your device on, and your device might take a few more
seconds to warm up.

Then, the Smart Remote wants you to teach it the way to switch inputs on
your TV. To do this:
1. Use the Smart Remote to switch your TV by one input (from Video 1 to
Video 2, for example). IMPORTANT: If you use arrow keys, make sure
you use the ones on the bottom of the remote!
2. Press the Next soft key.

If the sequence the Smart Remote tells you doesn’t match what you use to
switch inputs, press the Next soft key to try again.
TIP: If this screen tells you your sequence ends with [wait], try entering the
input sequence again and use the OK or ENTER key as the last step.

If you see this screen, you’ll need to try switching inputs again. Make sure
you use keys on the bottom half of the remote and that you’re pressing each
key firmly.

Chapter 3 25
Managing OneTouch Activities

Now it’s time for you to make sure you’ve got the input you want for this
activity. Each time you press SEL, the remote sends the right key presses to
change inputs. Press just once and wait for the Smart Remote to beep (or for
your device to react). This may take a few seconds per press.
TIP: Make sure there’s something playing on the device you’re trying to
watch or listen to. For example, if you’re setting up a “Watch DVD” activity,
make sure your DVD player is on with a disc playing, and that your TV
(and audio receiver you use it for DVD audio) is on and set to the correct
input to watch the DVD player.

The Smart Remote tells you when it’s switching inputs on your device. It
also beeps when it’s done sending the commands to switch inputs. Make
sure you wait for the remote to finish and your device to react before you
press SEL again.

The remote wants to count how many inputs you have on each device, so it
“bumps” you off the right input and watches how you get back to it.

Each time you press SEL, the remote sends the right key presses to change
inputs. It also counts the number of times you press, so press just once and
wait for the remote to beep (or for your device to react). This may take a few
seconds per press.
TIP: Make sure there’s something playing on the device you’re trying to
watch or listen to.
IMPORTANT: The Smart Remote tells you when it’s switching inputs on
your device. It also beeps when it’s done sending the commands to switch
inputs. Make sure you wait for the remote to finish and your device to react
before you press SEL again.

Did it work?
Yes: press Ok to end the OneTouch Setup Wizard.
No: Don’t worry. Just press Retry to help the Smart Remote get it right.

your display device, which routes the audio signal to the audio device.

Steps lets you enter the different key presses for this activity. Highlight
this line in the Edit activity screen and press SEL to program the steps
in the activity. Read the instructions then press the Ok soft key to clear
them from the screen.
Then, begin entering the steps for your activity:
Use the DEVICES key and the right and left arrow keys to change
the active device as necessary.

following options are available:
Infrastructure networks use a single access point (like a wireless
router) for wireless communication. Most home networks are of
this type.
Ad-hoc networks allow devices to communicate directly with each
other without the use of an access point. Ad-hoc networks are also
referred to as peer-to-peer or PC to PC networks.
Security lets you define the kind of security your WiFi network uses.
NOTE: If you’re not sure what kind of security your WiFi network uses, check with
your internet service provider or wireless router manufacturer.
The following Security options are available:
None means that your WiFi network is not password protected.
WEP means that your WiFi network uses Wired Equivalency Privacy

protection. This kind of network requires a network key (password)

of between 10 and 26 characters, using only the numbers 0-9 and the
letters A-F. If you select WEP, the remote will ask you to enter the
network key (password) in the settings in order to proceed.
WPA-PSK (AES+TKIP) means that your WiFi network uses the first
version of WiFi Protected Access–Pre-Shared Keys protection. This
kind of network requires a network key (password) of between 8 and
63 characters. If you select WPA-PSK, the remote will ask you to
enter the network key (password) in the settings in order to proceed.
WPA2-PSK (AES+TKIP) means that your WiFi network uses the
second, more secure version of WiFi Protected Access–Pre-Shared Keys
protection. This kind of network requires a network key (password) of
between 8 and 63 characters. If you select WPA2-PSK, the remote will
ask you to enter the network key (password) in the settings in order to
proceed.
Network key lets you enter your WiFi network password.
Address settings lets you define how the Smart Remote is identified on
your WiFi network. The following options are available:
Automatic requires an active Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
(DHCP) server to be working on your local network. DHCP servers
are used for assigning dynamic IP addresses to devices on a network.
Most home wireless networks will use the Automatic setting.
Manual requires you to manually configure the network addresses,
including the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and the domain
name server (DNS) addresses.

WiFi Connection Troubleshooting

If the Smart Remote is having problems connecting to your wireless network, try the following solutions:
1. Make sure your internet service is working correctly.
Using one of the computers on your WiFi network, access the Smart Remote web site at http://click365.tv. If you
cannot see this site, resolve Internet connectivity before continuing to troubleshoot the Universal Smart Remote.
2. Make sure the Smart Remote is in wireless network range.
Get within 10 feet or less of your wireless router and try connecting again.
3. Re-enter your WiFi network key or pass phrase.
If your WiFi network has a passkey or password, press the Back soft key, then press the Options soft key and select
Advanced setup from the list. Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight Network Key or Passphrase; then press
SEL to re-enter it. Use the ENTER key (to the right of the zero) if you need to delete characters to the left of the
cursor on screen. Then, use the number keys to enter the passkey or password you wrote down in the checklist.
Press the Ok soft key when you’re done entering the passkey or password.
When you’ve finished entering the password, press the Options soft key, highlight Connect, and press SEL. The
remote will try to connect to your WiFi network using the re-entered password.
Note: If you’ve made a mistake in entering your network key or passphrase, the Smart Remote will not connect. See solution #4 below.

4. Double-check your WiFi network settings.

If the error appears again, press the Back soft key, then press the Options soft key and select Advanced setup from
the list. Check your network SSID and Security against what you wrote down in the Setup Checklist.
If any of these don’t match up, use the up and down arrow keys to highlight the field that’s wrong; then press
SEL to change it.
For the Network SSID, use the ENTER key (to the right of the zero) to delete characters to the left of the cursor
on screen. Then, use the number keys toward the bottom of the remote to type in your WiFi network’s name—
these keys work much like the number keys on a cell phone to enter letters and numbers. The INPUT key (to
the left of the zero) toggles between upper or lower case letters. Be careful: network names are case sensitive—
make sure you use upper and lower case letters in the right places. When you’ve finished entering your network’s
SSID (its name), press the Ok soft key to confirm.
When you’ve finished making changes, press the Options soft key, highlight Connect, and press SEL. The remote
will try to connect to your WiFi network using the revised settings.
5. Reset the remote.
If you’re still having problems connecting, press and hold the (power) and (stop) keys simultaneously on the
Smart Remote. Then, press the LIGHT key on the right side of the remote for 3 seconds. The remote will take a
few moments to reset. Then, try again to connect to your WiFi network.
6. See if your wireless router has security features that are preventing the Smart Remote from
accessing the WiFi network.
Some wireless routers allow filters for MAC addresses and other security measures. Double-check with your internet
service provider or wireless router manufacturer to see if you’re using or have enabled any filters or locks.
For the most current information on troubleshooting, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the Smart
Remote web site at http://click365.tv or call the AR Remote Helpline at 1-800-276-0509.

Chapter 5
Using the Program Guides

The Smart Remote can access guide information from satellite and cable
program providers as well as from broadcast analog and digital stations.
You can set up multiple guides for your different program providers. For
example, if you have satellite and cable TV, you can set up the Smart Remote
to show guides for both program providers.
The Smart Remote will download programming information for all the
channels in that provider’s listing. Then, you can filter the guides to show all
the channels or only those channels (“My Channels”) or program types you
specify. You can also customize the guides and give them new names.
Using the Program Guides

Setting Up Program Guides

If you have not already set up program guides for all of your television
providers (satellite, cable, or broadcast), or if you need to set up a new
provider, you can set up providers through the Guide screen.
To set up a guide:
1. Press the HOME key. The Home screen appears.
2. Highlight the Guide icon and press SEL. The Guide selection screen
appears.
3. Press the Options soft key. A list of options appears.
4. Highlight Add/manage providers and press SEL. The Provider setup
screen appears.
5. Press the Options soft key. A list of options appears.
6. Highlight New and press SEL. The Smart Remote checks the click365
server for available providers in your area. This may take a few moments.

Once the Smart Remote has retrieved the information on available

television providers in your area, the Add Provider screen appears with
the names of different programming providers.
7. Highlight the name of the provider you want to add and press SEL. This
adds listings for that guide provider to your guide. This may take a few
minutes.
Note on guide capacity: The guide system can hold up to seven days of listings at
a time, depending on how many channels are in the guide. For example, if you have
a total of 70 channels in your guide, the Smart Remote can hold up to seven days
of listings for those channels. If you have 140 channels, the remote can hold up to
three and a half days of listings. Guides for satellite and digital cable programming
are usually the largest. The Smart Remote will adjust how many days it holds in its
listings according to the number of channels for all providers in your guide. When
deciding which channels to download more listings for, the Smart Remote favors
channels in small lineups (less than 30 channels).
