The theme of the contest
was “What Patriotism
Means to Me”. The contest
was open to all middle
school students in the local
area. The essays were
judged on content, style,
grammar and overall
impression. The two win-
ning essays were sent to the William Werner and Krysta Gnidziejko

Pajama Program Contribution Drive

in Hackettstown

A
Pajama Program Contribution Drive will be held in
Hackettstown to benefit the New Jersey Chapter of
the Pajama Program, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that pro-
vides new pajamas and new books to children in need. The
drop off site is Trinity United Methodist Church, Main
Street, from Sunday, February 13 to Saturday, February 19,
2011, during the hours of 11 a.m. to 7pm. The sizes that are
needed range from newborn to adult medium, as the pro-
gram serves children aged newborn through teens.
The Pajama Program is celebrating its 10th anniversary
in 2011, and in the past six years the NJ Chapter of the
Pajama Program has distributed more than 60,000 pairs of
pajamas and more than 50,000 books. Last year in
Foster and Adoptive Family Services, both agencies being
501(c)3 nonprofits that serve children in foster care. Tax-
deductible checks are also welcome, made payable to
Pajama Program, NJ Chapter. Individuals, families, groups,
& organizations are encouraged to donate.

Comedy Show Fundraiser

Hackettstown, we collected 285 pairs of pajamas for needy
children in Warren County.
Since Valentine’s Day, February 14, is a day of love, it
seems appropriate to focus our local drive on this day.
Pajamas and books are on sale at clearance prices in many
local retail stores, making it easy to give at this time of year.
The pajamas and books collected will be distributed to
CASA-SHAW (Court-Appointed Special Advocates of
Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren), and Warren County

The “Touch Tunnel” Returns to Liberty Science Center
Opens to the Public February 18
O
ne of the most popular original
experiences at Liberty Science
Center returns to the institution
starting on February 18.
The Touch Tunnel is a pitch-black,
crawl-through maze that guests navigate by
sense of touch alone. Exploring an
unknown environment in the dark brings
into focus just how much the average
human relies on vision, giving guests a new
appreciation of this important sense.
The original Touch Tunnel generated a
loyal fan base that will be thrilled to discov-
er that the new edition has more twists and
turns, adding to the challenge of making it
through.
It was first located on the former Health
Floor from 1993 to 2005 when it was
removed to accommodate new exhibitions
added to the Center during an ambitious 22-
month renovation and expansion. However,
after receiving steady guest requests to
bring it back, Science Center officials
decided to restore the Touch Tunnel in a
new version, further enhancing the institu-
tion’s award-winning mix of hands-on exhi-
bitions, programs and other science-rich
learning opportunities.

Photos Featured in Famous Child Psychologist’s Book

donated six large prints and an
album of photographs to the Taylor
Memorial Library at Centenary College.
The photographs were featured in the book
Child Care and Development written by Dr.
Louise Bates Ames of Gesell Institute, a
well-known psychologist in child develop-
ment studies.
Bunnell met the noted psychologist through
a mutual friend in the 1960’s. Ames had
presented a program about child develop-
ment for the Montclair schools and Bunnell
had provided the photographs for that pres-
entation. They developed a working rela-
tionship from that point forward and Ames
used 45 of Bunnell’s photos for her 1970
book.
Bunnell has also produced photographs
that have been displayed at the Smithsonian
History and Technology Museum, the
Montclair Art (N.J.) Museum, Montclair
Academy, Bloomsburg University and at
many shows. She has illustrated other year-
books and special photos. Bunnell has also

2. When does it open? What are the
hours of operation?
February 18 at 9:00 am. It is open during
the Center’s normal operating hours. For
the winter/spring season, these are Tuesday-
Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Saturday-
Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Closed
Mondays except holidays. See lsc.org for

3. What does it cost?
The Touch Tunnel is free with paid admis-
sion or membership. (See restrictions, item
5.)
4. How does it work?
Guests crawl into a black entrance and must
find their way through the maze to the exit.
Many people solve the maze within 10 min-
utes. A few might need hints from Center
staff monitoring their progress.
5. Who can experience it?
The Touch Tunnel is for guests ages 7 and
over. Younger children are not permitted in
the experience unless accompanied by an
adult. Guests who are pregnant, have back
pain or cannot crawl for at least 10 minutes
should not attempt the Touch Tunnel.
6. Where will the Touch Tunnel be locat-
ed?
Guests will find the all-new Touch Tunnel
in the Changing Experiences Gallery, for-
merly the Traveling Exhibition Gallery, on
the west side of the 4th Floor.
7. What else will be in that gallery?
Guests waiting in line will enjoy a range of
experiences including specially composed
ambient soundscape music and colorful
graphic panels about humans’ five senses
and the sometimes surprising extra senses
found in the animal kingdom. Upon exit-
ing they can try activities related to senses
such as optical illusions, hands-on learning
experiences, and more, including adding to
a project to collect and display memories
and thoughts about the old and new Touch
Tunnels.
8. Where was the original Touch Tunnel?
The first Touch Tunnel was located on the
former Health Floor from 1993 to 2005
when it was removed to accommodate new
exhibitions added to the Center during the
most recent renovation and expansion.
9. Why was it taken out in 2005?
The original Touch Tunnel was quite worn
and was removed to make way for new
experiences added throughout the building
as part of the comprehensive expansion and
renovation completed in 2007.
10. Why is it being brought back now?
After receiving a steady stream of guest
requests, the Science Center decided to
restore the Touch Tunnel in a new version,
further enhancing the institution’s award-
winning mix of hands-on exhibitions, pro-
grams and other science-rich learning
opportunities. Because traveling exhibi-
tions are booked some three years before
they are shown at museums, this is also the
first time the Center has had gallery space
large enough to accommodate the new
Touch Tunnel.
11. What happens if someone panics in
the Touch Tunnel or the fire alarm
sounds?
The Touch Tunnel features a number of
safety systems designed to keep it safe and
fun for all guests. First, infrared cameras
and microphones allow Science Center staff
to monitor progress of those in the maze.
Being able to see and hear guests at all
times allows staff to give verbal encourage-
ment when necessary, allowing everyone to
complete the challenge. Second, panels
located all along the Touch Tunnel can be
popped open if necessary, giving LSC staff
immediate access to guests inside. The pan-
els pop open automatically if the fire alarm
sounds.
12. How do infrared cameras work?
Infrared shows heat on the surface of an
object, giving a distinctive exterior outline
of guests crawling in the Touch Tunnel.

Meet Phoenix from Eleventh Hour Rescue.
Phoenix has risen up from a very bad life that he
had previously in Georgia. Kept outside all
day, crated, in the hot sun with limited food and
water, this underweight and dehydrated, 1 ?
year old, German Sheppard mix has come a
long way. Now in a foster home here in NJ
awaiting adoption, Phoenix lives with several

5 Tips for A Healthier Pregnancy
1. Take prenatal vitamins – take a pre-
natal vitamin with at least 400 mcg of folic
acid and a DHA supplement daily. Ideally
start taking prenatal vitamins before you
conceive.
2. Drink up– drink at least 64 oz of
water a day; try to limit juice and no caf-
feine! More than a cup of caffeine a day has
been found to increase risks of miscarriage.
3. Get the flu vaccine – the CDC rec-
ommends that all women who will be preg-
nant during the flu season (October to May)
receive the flu vaccine. Serious complica-
tions of the flu in pregnancy include
preterm labor, pneumonia, and death.
Babies cannot be vaccinated against the flu
until they are 6 months old, but will receive
antibodies from the mother if she is vacci-
nated in the pregnancy. For those con-
cerned about thimerosol, a preservative that
contains mercury, there are flu vaccines
available that do not contain thimerosol.
4. Exercise – try to exercise for 30 min-
utes most days of the week. Regular exer-

gy, strength, endurance and prepare your
body for labor and childbirth. Try prenatal
yoga, elliptical machine, treadmill, swim-
ming, and the recumbent bicycle. Try to
keep your heart rate under 140 and stop
exercising if you feel nauseous, dizzy or
have contractions.
5. Diet – women who are pregnant need
about 300 extra calories a day – this is not a
lot of food. You are not eating for two! Try
to eat small meals frequently, about every
two to three hours. You need about 60
grams of protein a day so try to follow a
high protein diet (meat, cheese, eggs,
peanut butter, legumes) with 5-7 servings of
fruit and vegetables a day. Expected weight
gain in pregnancy is 25-35 lbs if you start
out the pregnancy at a normal body weight.

Jazzercise of Hackettstown Temporarily Relocates Classes
Pending Grand Re-Opening

azzercise of Hackettstown, part of
Jazzercise, Inc., the world’s leading
dance fitness program, will be tem-
porarily relocating its classes pending a
Grand Reopening at its regular facility the
week of March 14.
During the weeks of February 21 and
February 28, Jazzercise of Hackettstown
will be operating its classes out of Panther
Valley Ecumenical Church, 1490 Route
517. During the week of March 7, classes
will be closed completely for inventory and
new space preparations. Then, on March
14, the classes will return to the location in
which they’ve been held for more than 20
years, Trinity United Methodist Church,

Bring Comfort to the Table
I
t’s true – the kitchen is the heart of the
home. Ever notice how people always
gather there? Whether baking treats,
making dinner or spending time with fami-
ly and friends, the kitchen is my favorite
place to be. Since my day job is Consumer
Test Kitchen Project Manager for the Nestlé
Test Kitchens, you can bet I love to stir
things up. This column lets me pass along to
you some of my best recipes, tips and bak-
ing secrets.
Just before the start of spring, there are
those last chilly nights of winter that call for
foods that warm the body and the soul. And
that’s the very definition of comfort food.
Here are some of my favorite ways to bring
some comfort to the table and smiles to the
faces of those around it:
• A make-ahead casserole – I like to put
together a hearty one-dish meal that makes
enough for leftovers on another night.
• Homemade hot cocoa mix – Keeping a
container of homemade mix ready lets me
make a cozy cup of cocoa to warm things up
after school or any time at all.
• Quick loaves – Waking up to the smell
of baking lemon bread, banana bread or
pumpkin bread makes the day better
already.
• Soups and chowders – I like to make a
big batch so there’s some for supper and

plenty left over to send some to school for a
good, hot lunch.

and act as a thickener. Sunny yellow corn
and crispy bacon really brighten up the

6 tablespoons couscous
4 large red, orange, or yellow bell peppers,
or a combination
3/4 cup prepared salsa, plus more for serv-
ing (optional)
1 cup frozen corn, thawed
2 teaspoons chili powder
Salt and pepper
1/4 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar,
Monterey jack, or Mexican blend cheese
Preheat oven to 500°F.
In small saucepan over medium-high
heat, bring water to a boil. Stir in couscous,
cover, remove from heat, and set aside for at
least 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, in large skillet over medi-
um-high heat, cook pork, stirring occasion-
ally and breaking it up, until no longer pink,
about 4 minutes.
Also while couscous is softening,
remove tops from peppers and scrape out
seeds. Set aside.
In large bowl, combine couscous, pork,
salsa, corn, and chili powder. Season with
salt and pepper to taste. Fill peppers with
pork mixture. Arrange peppers in a shallow
baking pan and bake for 10 minutes.
Sprinkle cheese on top and continue bak-
ing until peppers are tender and stuffing is
heated through, about 5 minutes.
Serve peppers with additional salsa on
the side if you like.

Let’s Resolve The Eligibility to Run for President Once and For All!
I
was fascinated to read that the new Governor of Hawaii
wants to find a way to release Obama’s birth certificate
as reported by the Meadville Tribune on December 29,
2010. What is strange is that the previous governor was a
republican who refused to release any information based on
Hawaii privacy Law. The newly elected governor
Abercrombie, a democrat, is asking the Hawaiian attorney
general to find a way to disclose Obama’s birth certificate.
The solution though is very simple: the only person who
actually can resolve the question is Obama himself. What
is the big deal about making public the actual birth certifi-
cate? This would be the only way to close the chapter.
Besides when the Obama campaign staff demanded that
McCain showed his birth certificate Sen. Mc Cain did not
have any problem making it public. There is a bigger ques-
tion that needs to be resolved to avoid any future question
of any candidates running for the office of the President of
the United States. The U.S. Constitution states “No person
except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United
States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall
be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any
Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained
to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a
Resident within the United States”. The Constitution clear-
ly states that only a natural born Citizen is eligible to run for
office of the U.S. presidency. What actually does “natural
born citizen” mean? Is it possible that it means that anyone
who was actually born in the U.S. would be eligible? Does
it mean that all the children of illegals that were born on
U.S. soil will be eligible? Does it mean that if the future
dictator of North Korea Kim Jong-Nam’s wife would give
birth to a child in New York City, this child would be eligi-
ble to become President of the United States? Let’s say that
Obama was actually born in Hawaii. We now know that his
Mother was born in the U.S., his father was born in Kenya
and a British citizen. Because of this union Obama has a
dual citizenship. Does “natural born” mean either both par-
ents have to be American born or one parent would have to
be American born and the other parent at least an American
citizen? Obama’s mother remarried an Indonesian and
there is a claim that her second husband adopted Obama. In
summary Obama is the natural son of a British citizen and
of an American citizen. Later on he was the stepson of an
Indonesian. I still remember vividly a remark made by
Hillary Clinton during the democratic presidential primary
campaign of 2008. She stated that Obama cannot be elected
president. Nobody ever paid attention to that remark and I
always wonder what she actually meant. Do the Clintons
have additional information that should be made public?
Regardless, there is a greater responsibility for the con-
gress of the United States. Congress must, once and for all,
enact Laws that would finally define the legal requirements
of every presidential candidate.
If the Federal Government refuses to follow through
then it would be the responsibility of every State of the
Union to clarify the requirements of the Presidential candi-
date to be on each State ballot. Each State should also pass
and enforce Laws to make sure that only American citizens
show up to vote. I refuse to believe that the American citi-
zens are willing to give up their sovereignty by allowing
non citizens to vote. One question the reader might have is:
what are the chances that someone with no loyalty to the
U.S. of America would actually be elected to the office of
the President. Let’s assume that someday a natural born cit-
izen would marry a foreigner born of a country where anti
American sentiments are high and the foreign parent might
even be a communist activist who espouses one world gov-
ernment under communist rule. Out of this union a child
could be born and as he (or she, the male pronoun will be
used for simplicity) grows up he might be influenced by the
dreams from his non American parent. As he gets older he
could also be influenced by another ideology that thinks
America is the great Satan. Along the way he could become
very eloquent with the English language and very likable.
When chosen to run for president he might be able to organ-
ize his campaign with the European socialist movement. He
could show up in European public squares that could be
filled with socialist activists to convince the American voter
that he will be accepted by the people of Europe. Could
actually the American voters vote for such individual? It
could very well happen and this is why I believe it is imper-
ative that rules are set once and for all that will establish the
eligibility requirements for candidates running for president
as well who is allowed to vote. Any individual who desires
to work with federal agencies with sensitive information
that affect our national security needs to obtain a top secret
clearance. The office of the President is the most sensitive
position as far as national security is concern, why should-
n’t every candidate be required to obtain a top security
clearance? If we want this Nation of ours to survive anoth-
er two hundred and more years then all freedom loving
Americans must send a clear message at the State level as
well at the federal level: protect our Republic don’t let it be
destroyed . Define a "Natural born citizen"!

Thomas Edison’s Home Cement Dreams
Were at Yankee’s Home Plate

W
hen we think of Thomas Edison
we think about the light bulb and
all his electrical inventions.
However, Edison had cemented dreams of
the home construction market. After a
failed iron-ore refining business, he was left
with a large inventory of heavy equipment.
Edison’s inventive mind found a way to put
this idle equipment back into production
when he formed the Edison Portland
Cement Company in 1899. Edison envi-
sioned many uses for his cement such as
low cost homes, furniture, refrigerators, and
even his phonographs. One can say his
mind was heavy on cement. Although.
Concrete-cement was rarely used in the
early 20th century; Edison went full speed
in launching the cement industry as the
ideal chief substance in home construction.
By 1908 Edison’s team had perfected their
Edison-Portland cement formula for the
home construction business. But, Edison
did not only focus his efforts on cement. He
executed the design of massive reusable
steel molds to cast the walls of these cement
houses. In 1910 Edison used his own estate
to cast 2 experimental buildings from his
cement and molds. They were a gardener’s
cottage and a garage at his Glenmont estate.
The Edison Portland Cement Company
works was located in Stewartsville, New
Jersey. In 1905 the company was producing
3,000 barrels of cement per day. They
expanded this business in 1908, with a
cross-licensing agreement with the North
American Portland Cement Company. This
gave both firms reciprocal use of key
cement patents. This also helped propel
their cement business and they became the
4th largest US cement producers of the
1920’s. Although they were successful in
the production of high quality cement, their
home construction business was flailing.
Edison never achieved his vision of mass
home production since concrete housing
took much more effort to develop than
Edison was willing to invest. Edison was
still left with the bitter taste of failure from
his iron-ore refining business to take on new
investment risks. Instead of making rows
and rows of low cost new homes he was
only able to make it to a famous home plate.
His Edison Portland Cement erected the
wall of the main entrance of the first New
York Yankee stadium.
Edison never provided builders with
complete plans for these concrete homes
which resulted in a lack of interest by home
constructors to build these structures.
Although, he boasted that he would not take
a profit but would give away the patented
information to qualified builders. Edison
had trouble making the molds for the hous-
es, let alone architectural decorative fixture
pieces. An upscale home could call for
molds composed of 2300 pieces. It was no
wonder the cement home building was des-
tined to sink. It was estimated back then
that a home builder would have to invest in
an estimated $175,000 worth of home cast
pieces. By the 1930’s with depression eco-
nomics, the cast cement home building
projects had become an extinct market.
The Yankee stadium entrance that
Edison built has been demolished but its
rubble has been saved as souvenirs. A few
Edison Portland cement homes still remain
livable and standing in places such as Union
NJ. The public can still see Edison’s
cement garage and gardener’s cottage when
they tour the Glenmont estate which is also
part of the Thomas Edison museum.

Service Project/Rise Mission Teams

all trimmings and support Trinity’s ASP and RISE
Summer Mission Teams. Guests will enjoy a variety
of appetizers and refreshments in the rotunda and will have
an opportunity to peruse the hundreds of items in the silent
auction, as well as to bid on a variety of crafts, services, cer-
tificates, hotel stays, and more. The banquet will be held in
Starr Hall and will include a live auction with even more
fantastic items, including trips, theme baskets, and so much
