NCMS Artistic Processes

● Creating
○ Using deductive reasoning to understand concepts for the long term, not in the
short term
○ The creative ideas, concepts and feelings that influence musicians’ work emerge
from a variety of sources
○ Teach improvisation to approach education in a different way
● Connecting
○ Taking an interdisciplinary approach to music education: how skills apply to
other classes and life as a whole
○ Musicians connect their personal interests, experiences, ideas and knowledge to
creating, performing and responding
○ Understanding connections to varied contexts and daily life enhances musicians’
creating, performing and responding
○ Teaching music theory and composition allows students to make connections
with the music they are playing
● Performing
○ Performers’ interest in and knowledge of musical works, understanding of their
own technical skill, and the context for a performance influence the selection of
repertoire
● Responding
○ Understanding how changes in action create changes in sound
○ Individuals’ selection of musical works is influenced by their interests,
experiences, understandings and purposes

Performing artistic process

● Select
● Analyze
○ Used for deductive reasoning
● Interpret
● Rehearse, evaluate and refine
● Present

Left-Hand playing skills

● Chromatic alterations
● Placement and shape of the left hand
● Shifting
● Vibrato
● Intonation

Bow Strokes/Bow Styles

● Detache bowing
○ Standard
● Disconnected/biting bow
○ European in origin
○ Accented/pinching
● Coloring bow strokes

Challenging skills

● Shifting-> teach first

● Vibrato
○ More difficult than shifting, teach later
○ Shifting motion is a part of vibrato
● Difficulty is highly dependent on age group

Inductive Reasoning in Education

● Spiral Learning: Cycling back to concepts in order to create a deeper understanding of
said concept
○ Can be used for the relationship between shifting and vibrato
● Understanding how changes in bow hold results in changes of sound
