Function
These additives provide a strong reduction of surface tension of paint systems. Therefore, they especially improve substrate
wetting and avoid cratering. Additionally, surface slip and gloss are increased.
In comparison to silicone oils these additives are „user friendly“. Through a series of tests, however, it should be ascertained as
to whether foam is being stabilized by these additives before large-scale application starts. Also, the recoatability and cratering
should be evaluated.
BYK-310 is a heat resistant silicone additive, i.e., in contrast to conventional (polyether modified) silicones,
it shows no thermal decomposition at temperatures between 150°C/302°F and 230°C/446°F. Thus, upon the
recoating baking systems, no loss in adhesion and no surface defects occur. (Note: The aforementioned defects
BYK-310 can be caused by the decomposition products of conventional silicones at temperatures above 150°C/302°F.)
The effective substance of BYK-310 is listed in title 21 CFR (food and drugs) § 175.300, Indirect Food Additives,
Adhesives and Components of Coatings. The usage level may not exceed 0,1% (delivery form based on total
formulation) and the film thickness may not exceed 12 µm.
BYK-330 improves flow and leveling, scratch resistance, flooding and floating and orientation of matting agents.
BYK-330 has a strong stabilizing effect on the surface, so that the sensitivity of the coating systems to foreign
BYK-330
particles and strong air-drafts is considerably reduced. BYK-330 prevents surface defects in curtain coatings
applied to pre-heated wood panels.
BYK-344 increases the surface slip and reduces the surface tension to provide excellent substrate wetting. It also
BYK-344
improves anti-blocking properties. In new formulations, it should be replaced by BYK-306 (see data sheet S201).
Special Note
The use of thermostable silicone additives such as BYK-310 in coil-coatings (or similar systems) can lead to a
BYK-310 migration of the silicone to the reverse side of the sheet or roll. This effect depends upon the pressure within
the stack of sheets (or weight of the roll) and upon the system and binder used.
