Maximum engineering efficiency –

in all phases of the lifecycle of the machine and plant
Engineering

With SIMATIC you rely on an integrated engineering environment. Efficient software supports
you over the complete lifecycle of your machine or plant – from the planning and design
stages through configuring and programming as far as commissioning, operation and up-
grading. With its integration capability and harmonized interfaces, SIMATIC software supports
a high degree of data consistency – throughout the entire engineering process.

Maximum data transparency on all automation levels –

Communications

based on proven standards

SIMATIC creates the foundations for unlimited integration in communication – and thus for
maximum transparency on all levels, from the field and control level to the operations man-
agement level all they way up to the corporate management level. SIMATIC relies on interna-
tional, cross-vendor standards which can be combined flexibly: PROFIBUS, the global No. 1
fieldbus, and PROFINET, the leading Industrial Ethernet standard.

Minimization of downtimes –
through efficient diagnostic concepts
Diagnostics

All SIMATIC products feature integrated diagnostic functions with which a fault can be identi-
fied and eliminated to provide increased system availability.
Even with larger plants, the Maintenance Station provides you with a uniform view of the
maintenance-relevant information of all automation components.

Protection of personnel and machines –

vant standards: IEC 62061 up to SIL 3, EN ISO 13849-1 up to PL e, as well as EN 954-1. Due to
the integration of safety technology in standard technology, only one controller, one I/O, one
engineering, and one bus system are required. Thus the system advantages and comprehen-
sive functionality of SIMATIC are also available for fail-safe applications.

Maximum configuration efficiency

Simple and user-friendly interface

The engineering software is based on the latest software

technology (e.g. Microsoft.NET) and is currently available in
German, English, French, Spanish and Italian, as well as in Chi-
nese (simplified), Taiwanese (traditional Chinese), Korean and
Japanese.

The software contains a series of editors and tools for different

configuration tasks. You can configure, for example, in level
technology using 32 screen levels. For the configuration of
displays, various convenient functions are available, such as
zoom in/out, rotate and align. In WinCC flexible you can set up
your working environment according to your needs. In the
engineering, a working environment oriented toward the re-
spective configuration task appears on the monitor of the con-
figuration computer. Here you will find everything you need
to make your work more convenient:

Engineering – Convenient, efficient, flexible

User-friendly search and replace functions allow project-wide
searching for objects, centralized rewiring of tags and the
searching and replacing of texts. In addition, the cross refer-
ence list permits direct access to all objects in the project.
All configuration data can also be compiled and printed out
conveniently in one project document.

The handling of graphics in different formats is very easy. Sup-

plied graphics and the user's own screens can be displayed by
means of a graphics browser and integrated into the project
display by means of a drag-and-drop function. If a picture is to
be edited, the associated external editor is started automati-
cally. The placing of objects by dragging and dropping in the
work area generates a graphic display in the open window or
permits the labeling of a button or softkey.

Reusable blocks get the job done faster

Configuring a motion path

WinCC flexible already has a large number of scalable basic and
extended objects and graphics, that can also be dynamized and

Engineering – Multilingual, expandable and future-proof

Multilingual – with automatic translation
.

WinCC flexible gives you maximum support in the creation of

multilingual configurations in as many as 32 languages for
worldwide use, of which as many as 16 languages can be swit-
chable online, depending on the target system. Switchable
views permit the multilingual input of configuration data.
Language-dependent texts and graphics can be managed cen-
trally. An automatic translation is possible on the basis of the
system and user-specific dictionaries. The system dictionary is
included in the scope of delivery of WinCC flexible. In this dic-
tionary you can also store terms that occur frequently in your
project.

By means of an import and export interface in Excel format,

any texts in Unicode can also be extracted from the project
and edited with external tools, e.g. for translation into another
language by a service provider. This is of particular interest, for Extract from the system dictionary (9 languages)
example, if a global machine builders would like to have their
WinCC flexible project translated into Asian pictographic lan-
guages (Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese) for export.

Individual expansions by means of VBScript

In standard form, WinCC flexible offers you numerous options

for dynamizing the objects. If, however, you would like to be
even more flexible, VBScript provides you with a powerful and
easy to learn script language based on Visual Basic (projects
for panels in 270 series or above). You can thus profit imme-
diately from your Visual Basic knowledge. The IntelliSense
function permits high-speed programming of the accesses to
runtime objects and a simple creation of control sequences in
the script. Debugging is possible in the simulator during the
engineering and also at runtime if required.

Security of investment by acceptance of configuration

data

WinCC flexible offers you future-proof security of investment,

because it represents the logical development of the ProTool
family. Existing projects can simply be taken over and used for
a project with WinCC flexible.

You can export any configured messages from a project to CSV

files. These exported data can be expanded externally (with
Converter
MS Excel, for example) and reimported in a project. This also
applies text lists. Reuse reduces the configuration effort for export and import tag data. Thus you can import, for example,
new projects. All properties of a message are imported. A test tags from different control programs (Step 7, AllenBradley,
routine ensures that there are no messages with the same etc.) into WinCC flexible projects.
message number in the target project. You can use the export-

up in several languages with translators. You can also jor vendors (Rockwell RS Logix500, Modicon Telemecanique
PL7,GE Fanuc VersaPro). These converters translate the ven-
dor-specific formats into the Excel format so that all tag infor-
mation can be imported to WinCC flexible at the touch of a
button.

Engineering – Integrated in automation systems

Integration in SIMATIC STEP 7
Thanks to the integration into the configuration interface of
SIMATIC STEP 7, WinCC flexible projects can be managed with-
in STEP 7 and communication settings and tags and alarms
can be shared. This significantly reduces the frequency of er-
rors and ultimately leads to lower configuration costs.

In the integrated application case the project is managed by

means of the SIMATIC Manager that is a component of STEP 7.
By means of the SIMATIC Manager, you have access to all ob-
jects of WinCC flexible. You can, for example, create, copy or
delete HMI devices, but also individual HMI objects such as
graphics or recipes. During configuration, you have direct ac-
cess to the STEP 7 symbols and data blocks that you have de-
fined when creating the control program. This means it is no

Integration in SIMOTION SCOUT

Based on an innovative system approach, in which control
tasks (typically logic functions), motion control functions and
technology functions are combined, SIMOTION is an opti-
mized system platform for the automation solutions of ma-
chines in which motion control and technology tasks take cen-
ter stage. The motion control system consists of the engineer-
ing system SCOUT, the motion control technology packages
and a common runtime system for the different SIMOTION
platforms.

Integration of WinCC flexible into SIMOTION SCOUT offers the

same benefits as integration into SIMATIC STEP 7, and com-
plete integration into the SIMOTION SCOUT user interface as
well as the automatic generation of process images depend- Prefabricated faceplates

Basic functions and options

The runtime functionality is determined by the features of the

HMI device used, such as available memory capacity or the
number of function keys and can be extended by means of op-
tions. Some options are only available for panels above a spe-
cific class, while others are integrated. SIMATIC WinCC flexible
runtime is available as a standalone product for PC platforms.

Operating and display options

What options are available to the operator of a machine or

plant depends on how the project has been created and what
functionality the HMI device has. This functionality is made
available to the user by means of a host of configured graphic
objects on the user interface. WinCC flexible Runtime can be
operated with the keyboard, mouse or touch screen, depend-
ing on the HMI device used.

Visualization for WinCC flexible is performed using a Win-

dows-compliant user interface which comprises parameteriz-
able variable objects as well as technological variable blocks:

• Static texts and graphics (vector graphics)

• Graphic displays for various standard graphic formats (e.g.,

Panels overview
SIMATIC Push Button Panels
SIMATIC Push Button Panels can be used to design conventional operator pan-
els according to the motto "plug and control": They are ready for installation
and pre-assembled. In this way, time-consuming individual assembly and wir-
ing, as required for conventional operator panels, is not necessary.
This reduces the time required for wiring by up to 90% compared to conven-
tional wiring. All that is required is the corresponding installation cutout and
a bus cable (PROFINET, PROFIBUS DP, or MPI) for connection to the controller.

SIMATIC Micro Panels

The S7-200 micro system is compact, modular, and has a variety of communi-
cation ports.
It is thus suitable for many diverse automation tasks. Micro Panels are optimal-
ly adapted to the performance capability and applications of the S7-200.

SIMATIC Mobile Panels

Regardless of the industry or application, if mobility is required for on-site con-
trol and monitoring of machines and plants, mobile panels offer some crucial
advantages:
Machine operators or commissioning engineers are able to work exactly
where they have the best view of the workpiece or process.

SIMATIC Basic Panels

The process quality can be significantly improved with visualization even in
the case of small machines or simple applications. Despite this, however, the
human machine interface option has until now frequently remained unused
for cost reasons.
The new SIMATIC Basic Panels offer HMI basic functions at an attractive price
and thus open up new possibilities for mechanical engineering.

SIMATIC Panels – 70 series

The SIMATIC Panels of the 70 series are low-cost entry-level devices in the
range of graphics-capable operator panels. They offer rugged keys and are
ideally suited to small-scale HMI tasks.

SIMATIC Panels – 170 series

The Touch Panels and Operator Panels of the 170 series have proved them-
selves for operator control and monitoring of small applications. The perfor-
mance capability of the device is scalable. The higher order devices have a re-
tentive message buffer, and the color devices also have a PROFINET/Ethernet
interface.

SIMATIC Panels – 270 series

Based on the Windows CE operating system, the devices of the
270s series offer innovative operator control and monitoring combined with
the tried and tested advantages of the Operator Panels and Touch Panels:
ruggedness, stability, and simple handling.

SIMATIC Multi Panels – 170/270/370 series

Thanks to Windows CE, the multifunctional platforms offer PC-like openness
and flexibility combined with rugged, compact, and cost-optimized hard-
ware.
Without hard disk and fan, the SIMATIC Multi Panels can be used for visual-
ization even where high vibrations or dust-laden atmospheres restrict the
use of a PC.
The software PLC WinAC MP is available for controller tasks.

SIMATIC Thin Clients

Thin Clients are low-cost operator terminals that provide panel functionality
on site in large or extensive systems and thus they contribute to an en-
hanced overview, operability, and productivity of the plant.

SIMATIC Panels with stainless steel front

Panels with touch screens and stainless steel fronts are designed for opera-
tor control and monitoring of food processing machines in the food, bever-
ages and tobacco industry. They are based on DIN EN 1672-2 "Food process-
ing machinery – Safety and hygiene requirements".

Fully protected HMI devices

The new HMI devices with all-round protection supplement the portfolio of
the tried and tested built-in units with rugged operator panels in a slim and
appealing design. The devices are designed for mounting on a stand or sup-
port bracket and feature all-round IP65 protection.

Customer-specific solutions
The technical design of SIMATIC Panels is tailored to the requirementsof all
sectors. Individual SIMATIC Panels meet specific requirements. There are
SIMATIC Panels based on standard products which are tailored to individual
customer requirements.
