Icon or Almighty?
Only a few athletes in history can be called transcendent,
that is, in human terms, universally recognizable. In different
eras, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Babe Ruth were in
that elite group as icons. In a poll of Americans, more knew
that Babe Ruth played for the Yankees than could identify
the current occupant of the White House. He was the first
baseball player to earn more than the President, the first
athlete to have a stadium built for him, the first to endorse cigarettes he
didn’t smoke, cereals he didn’t eat, and underwear he didn’t wear. He was
also the first to sign a million autographs and eat 18 hot dogs in a sitting.
When he hit his 500th career homerun in 1929, the New York World called it
an accomplishment “to be bracketed with our skyscrapers, our universities,
our millions of automobiles as symbols of American greatness.”
Of course, icons are only humans, famous though they may be. If he
was alive, The Babe would probably be frustrated now that more people
know about Barry Bond’s “juicing” than his hot dog eating. Almighty
God is above all men and accomplishments. We have been studying the
compound names of Jehovah in the Old Testament, which represent both
His superlative and practical nature.
Elohim is another God-name and is derived from the Hebrew word El,
which stood for His might, omnipotence, and true transcendence. But He
is also called El Shaddai, God Almighty. Shaddai itself occurs 48 times in
the Old Testament and is derived from the word shad, meaning breast.
This pictures the nourishing, supplying, and satisfying of our God Who
is able to meet our needs. He revealed Himself to Abraham as the All-
sufficient One, the Promiser and Giver of gifts. Abraham and Sarah learned
that what God promises, He can deliver. He waited until their bodies were
reproductively dead so that they would see that their new son resulted
from God’s creative work. Whenever someone is born again, that is a true
“symbol” of divine “greatness.”
This powerful God was manifested in Jesus Christ Who said, “Without
Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). He is called Almighty in the book of
Revelation (16:14; 19:15). He is not only mighty in His goodness, but also
in His wrath, capable of pouring out blessings and bowls of judgment.
Let’s not forget that His “strength is made perfect in our weakness” (2 Cor.
12:9); His sufficiency is best revealed in our inadequacy. Don’t forget that
one day “Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:11). That’s transcendent!

Guest Reception
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the
Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00 a.m. service. Come and meet
Dr. Wicker.
ESTATE PLANNING
What People Like You Are Asking...
• What is the difference between a Will and a Revocable Living
Trust?
• What are some of my options for structuring my children’s
inheritance so it will be more apt to help rather than harm
them?
• My children are in different places spiritually and financially.
How can I treat them all fairly?
• How do people decide how much to leave to charity?
• What should I keep in mind in naming a guardian?

Bill & Ginny Hanson
In the Missions Kiosk
this Weekend!
Bill & Ginny Hanson are missionaries with the Association of Baptist for
World Evangelism (ABWE). They started their mission ministry in 1999.
Their need: As missionaires, they assist ABWE missionaries with building
projects globally. Presently, they manage 70 building projects in 20
different countries. The need is great to have Bill & Ginny come alongside
missionaries to assist with their building projects. Through this process, the
missionaries do not lose focus and valuable time that is needed in their
ministry. They have demonstrated through this building process that they
can save approximately 30-50% on building costs, making sure donors
funds are used effectively. The end result is people coming to know Christ.
Since 1999, God has led them to South Africa, West Africa, Ghana, Togo,
The Gambia, Philippines, Kosovo, Portugal, Bangladesh, Haiti, and various
portions of South America.
God has used them effectively in this unique ministry to build churches,
schools, missions hospitals, church camps, and other christian-related
facilities globally. Their prayer as they serve God is that people will be saved
or grow closer to Christ through the projects that God has them involved.
They have a financial shortfall of around $500 monthly to effectively facilitate
their ministry around the world. If you have any interest in supporting their
ministry through finances or prayers, please visit them at the Missions
Kiosk this weekend, or contact them at billh@abwe.org or 239-494-4883.
Financial gifts are fully tax deductible and can also be sent through FBCN or
directly to the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (Attn: Mr. Glenn
Priddy), P.O. Box 8585, Harrisburg, PA 17105. Please mark on the check or
letter “This financial gift is for Bill & Ginny Hanson, acct #10000.”

Kidz Town Worship

It is next week, boys & girls! The time has come to
beat the bushes and gather all your friends for next
weekend’s KidzTown. The BIG WEEKEND (February
26th & 27th) is almost here and you have only one
more week to invite your friends to this special
event. KidzTown Worship is always exciting, but this week it is over the top!
If you are a child in 1st through 4th grades, come to KidzTown Worship
this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. or Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in DC120 and join us
as we worship the Lord.

Beginning Your Journey

If you are a new believer in Christ, or new to First Baptist
Church Naples, please join us for this special class on
Sunday, February 20th from 9:30 a.m. until noon
in DC115. You will learn more about growing in your
Christian faith and about all the ways the church can help
you do that. Breakfast treats will be available. We will also provide you with
a DVD of the sermon for the weekend. Call 596-8600 x261 to let us know
you can join us.
God’s Challenge...
Put my Word into practice!
His Word instructs us in James 1:27 to
“Look after orphans.”
Do you know we have a Florida Baptist Children’s Home in our
area? Up to 10 children are being cared for in Ft. Myers at a home
built in 1992 by our own Charles Blankenship and countless other
First Baptist Church Naples members.

As with any home approaching twenty years old, redecorating is

needed. The Les Dickson Bible and Life Group is asking you to join
with them to update the children’s bedrooms. The goal is to paint,
replace carpet, purchase new furniture, and retile the bathrooms.

Would you consider joining us in this local mission project? We

need materials, furniture, and workers. And yes...we also need
money if you can help with that. Checks can be written to FBCN
with “FB Children’s Home” on the memo line. For more information,
contact Phil & Nancy Gardanier at 304-9039.

These are precious children who have been neglected, abused,

and/or abandoned. The safety of this Christian home is the only
family most of them have known, and may be the only place they
have found love in a home. Look through the eyes of Christ to see
His compassion and then be God’s hands and feet to meet the
challenge He has set before us.
