Health Care Reform
PRIME MINISTER David Cam-
eron said last month that his gov-
ernment will make fundamental
changes to Britain’s state-run
health care system, but critics
warned the reforms could under-
mine one of the country’s most vital
institutions.
The Conservative leader said he would
save money and cut red tape by giving
control over management to family prac-
titioners rather than bureaucrats, and allow
private companies to bid for contracts
within the National Health Service.
He said change is needed because stan-
dards of care in Britain have fallen behind
those in other European countries.
“I do not think we should put up with
being second-best,” Cameron told BBC
radio. “We should aim to be the best.”

system, “we would face a really big crunch
in two or three years’ time,” he added.

The government was about to publish
its Health and Social Care Bill.
Some doctors welcome the changes, but
critics claim the scale of the reforms could
cause chaos.
In a letter published in The Times
newspaper groups, including doctors’
body the British Medical Association, the
Royal College of Nursing and trade unions
warned that the scale and pace of reform
made the changes “extremely risky and
potentially disastrous.”
The health service is Britain’s biggest
employer, costs more than £100bn a year
– and is a political football, reformed and
criticized by governments since it was
established in 1948.
Cameron’s Conservative-led coalition
government plans to cut £80bn of public
spending to reduce the country’s huge
budget deficit. The government has said
the health budget will be spared the cuts,
which will bring about the biggest overhaul
of public services in decades.

court over the slaying of a woman whose
frozen body was discovered on the out-
skirts of the English city of Bristol.
Vincent Tabak, 32, is charged with

Yeates. The photogenic young woman’s
disappearance, and the discovery of her
body on Christmas Day, helped turn the

Tabak spoke only to confirm his
name, age and address at a brief hear-

about the debate on Twitter.
Brennan complained the lawmakers
should have voiced their arguments in
Parliament so other lawmakers could
have a chance to rebut them, instead of
making comments online.
Hoyle warned that lawmakers should
not use Twitter to update followers while
they sit in the Commons.

A JUDGE has sentenced a former law-

David Chaytor last month became the
first person to be jailed in the scandal
after he previously pleaded guilty to
three charges of false accounting.
The 61-year-old Chaytor had submit-
ted false bills for rent and IT services
totaling £18,350.
The disclosure of previously secret
expense documents in 2009 exposed
politicians billing the public for items
including swank second homes, horse
manure and pornographic movies.
A total of 392 current and former law-
makers were ordered to repay £1.12m.
Five other current or former lawmak-
ers face trials in the coming months.
London 2012 Olympic
Tickets On Sale In March
OLYMPIC organizers have announced
that London 2012 tickets will go on sale
on March 15.
There will be six weeks until April
26 to apply for the 6.6 million tickets
at prices ranging from £20 for standard
events to a symbolic £2,012 for the top-
priced seats at the opening ceremony.
Applications can be made at any
point as it is not a first come, first served
process.
The tickets are available only to
residents of Britain and some European
countries, including France and Ger-
many. Others will have to buy them
through their local Olympic committee
or its authorized ticket reseller.
Tickets for the Paralympics will go
on sale on September 9.

Change, But Pint Stays
THE GOVERNMENT announced the
relaxing of drink measures served in Brit-
ain’s pubs last month – but regular drinkers
needn’t worry, the traditional pint stays.
The government is to allow licensed
premises in England, Scotland and Wales
to sell beer and cider in smaller measures,
including schooners – an Australian two-
third pint measure.
Wine will also be sold in 75ml sizes,
much smaller than the standard 175ml.
The Department for Business, Inno-
vation and Skills aims to introduce the
changes over the next three months.
Science minister David Willetts said he
wanted to remove “unnecessary” red tape
surrounding the current system.
“No pub or restaurant should break
the law by selling a customer a sample of
wine,” he said.
“We have listened to consumers and
businesses. They have called for fixed
quantities to be kept but with greater
flexibility. That is what this change will
deliver.”

60 Years On Radio
BRITAIN’S longest running radio soap opera
celebrated it 60th year on the air last month.
The Archers was originally advertised as an
everyday story about country folk where its
fifteen minute episodes, broadcast six times
a week, drew a plethora of City residents
eager to experience country living. It garnered
an enthusiastic band of radio listeners that
still draws five million people to this fictional
country community every week. In 1951,the
BBC was unsure if the comings and goings of
British rural life would draw an audience, but
it did. Storylines about the lambing season,
swine fever dramas, crop concerns, vet
visits and market prices, coupled with the
social activities of the Women’s Institute,
where baking contests became hard fought
and competitive affairs amongst the ladies
of Ambridge. The BBC’s intention to educate
farmers on new agricultural methods that
began after the war, was the mind set behind
The Archers. Scandal and gossip was kept
to a bare minimum, though things did liven
up however – but very slowly.
A scene where the tavern’s landlord
shared a shower with one of his barmaids,
brought letters of outrage in the 1990s. The

gay marriage two years later. The arrival

UK Labor Unions Warn
Of Surge In Strikes

LABOR UNION leaders warned last
month of a surge in strikes next year to
protest the government’s harsh spend-
ing cuts – and claimed that industrial
action may even affect the country’s
royal wedding.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of
the Trades Union Congress, said that
walkouts could become widespread in
2011 as ordinary workers feel the impact
of Britain’s austerity measures.
Treasury chief George Osborne has
announced £81bn in spending cuts
through 2015, which will see as many
as 330,000 public sector jobs lost and
vastly reduce welfare payments. The cuts
are intended to tackle a spending deficit
of about £109bn, racked up during the
financial crisis.
“What is becoming clear to people is
just how unfair the coalition’s policies
are. Those who did (the) least to cause the
crash are being made to take the nastiest
medicine with the worst side-effects,”
Barber said.
DEMONSTRATION

strikes by subway workers, and violent
protests in recent months over planned
increases in college tuition fees.

to crash onto Coronation Street. And as the
residents come to terms with the carnage on
the cobbles, two families mourn loved ones
who have died.

that Kevin’s the father of her baby, not Tyrone.
Sally kicks Kevin out and he’s left holding the
baby when Tyrone tells him he doesn’t want

on his head after he hangs on in there long

Quinny’s death, of seeing war close at hand.

And if all of that wasn’t excitement enough,
Tracy Barlow returned. She upset everyone
and was found in a pool of blood in the back
yard of the Barlow’s. It doesn’t help Steve’s
case that he was the one who was found next
to Tracy’s body with blood on his hands. But
there’s a list as long as your arm as to who
could have attacked Tracey-luv.
At the Rovers Return, Audrey’s arch-
frenemy Claudia arrives and whips her big
shiny red hair back and forth. “Aud!” she
screams, to Audrey’s dismay. “Claudeee!”
Audrey replies, to get her own back. There’s
a prize raffle and Audrey’s not best pleased
when she wins a hairdo at Claudie’s salon.
She’s even more upset when she finds out
that Claudia’s hoping to open a new hair salon
in Ashley’s old butcher’s shop, and he’s not
even cold in his grave.

ATTENTION NEW YORK FANS: WLIW contacted
me a recent Friday morning because there is
some potentially bad news for EastEnders fans.
The recent Pledge Drive did not raise enough
money for WLIW to cover the acquisition fee for
another year of EastEnders. The new contract
needs to be signed and, given the numbers, the
program director cannot justify re-signing. The
station is $18,000 short, with the fee due March
1. If we EastEnders fans cannot raise that money
by the deadline, EastEnders will not be renewed.
And WLIW wanted to make it clear that this is not
any kind of a threat or bluff: It’s just an economic
reality for the station.

ACADEMICS in Scotland say they’re
using centuries old monks’ diaries to
help understand climate change.
Researchers at the University of Ed-
inburgh say the historic written records
broadly match modern computer simu-
lations of European climate patterns
over the past 500 years.
The scientists say the diaries include
details of harvests and explain whether
the writers experienced warm or cold
summers and winters.
Lead researcher Gabi Hegerl says the
findings will help to produce more accu-
rate predictions of future temperatures
and weather patterns.
The work was carried out with aca-
demics in Germany, Spain and Switzer-
land. The findings were published by
Nature Geoscience magazine.
EastEnders fan community has developed with
WLIW over the last six years, and the respect
that WLIW has for EastEnders fans, that this time
around when EastEnders is in jeopardy, they did
not just cancel the show (leaving us to only find
out by chance, thanks to an anonymous tipster),
but rather they called me to let us know that the
show is in trouble and ask what we thought we
could do about it and how we should proceed.
Please don’t ever believe anyone who tries to tell
you that WLIW has never forgiven us for sav-
ing EastEnders from cancellation in 2005. The
reality is, that fan effort we mounted has been a
continual source of pride for the station.
But another reality is this; EastEnders is an
expensive show, and the WLIW acquisitions
department simply does not have the funds for
it unless fans support it - especially now, in this
economy. We have to support it every year.
Right now, we need an additional $18K before
March 1. And by the way, raising $18K should
be totally doable for EastEnders: $18K means
just 300 fans pledging $60, or only 180 fans
pledging $100.
Towards that goal, would you be able to
pledge $60 or $100 towards another year of Eas-
tEnders? There are two ways you can pledge:

that the swine flu outbreak that appears to
be spiking in Britain could soon spread to
the rest of the continent.
The annual flu season struck the UK
early this year, with cases surging last
month and doubling almost every week.

to restrict the sale of cheap alcohol last
month, but campaigners, doctors and pub
owners said the modest curbs would do
little to tackle booze-fueled health and
social problems.
Britain has long struggled to control
a binge-drinking culture which has seen
alcohol-related deaths double in the past
two decades. Efforts to change Britons’
drinking habits – for example by tinker-
ing with closing hours and discouraging
people from the practice of buying each
other rounds – have largely failed to con-
trol the problem, and UK health experts
have turned to minimum pricing as a way
to tame Britain’s boozing.
Supermarkets have borne much of the
criticism, with retailers accused of selling
below-cost alcohol as an incentive to get
people into stores. Ministers had pledged
to crack down on the practice, but the
plans were strongly opposed by the drinks

with men but a new pub and a new ship. Both
are superb examples of their genre – see the
objects of my desire below.
NEWS OF THE BOOZE.
Fado’s Irish Pub (786)
924-0972 just opened
in downtown Miami, so I
scoped it out personally.
Fado’s (Gaelic for “Long
Ago”) is the real Irish-
owned deal, constructed
in Dublin and assembled
over in Miami. There are 14 Fados in various
states, started in 1996 by a group of Irish-
American entrepreneurs. On arrival, I was
impressed by Fados’ many solicitous and
efficient Irish bartenders, especially manager
Anthony Reals.
As always I tested the fish and chips – if
you can’t get a pub’s signature dish right I
won’t direct my British readers in there. It
first troubled me to see haddock used – cod
is standard and expected in Florida’s pubs
as I know from writing News of the Booze
for 20 years. But their haddock and chips
was spot-on, with perfect crispy batter and
chunky chips, making me a cod convert!

they use Fado’s out-of state supplier were

Fado’s décor could not be bettered, with
the design of the pub broken up into a number
of sections, each with a specific intent. For
instance, the highly decorated dark cherry
wood Victorian Long Hall is a large meeting
space representing the Long Hall at Dublin’s
Trinity College, with ornate lighting and floors.
Up the stairs on the next level is where a typi-
cal Irish Ceili might take place. There’s even a
library nook, paying homage to Irish Literature
because their great writers like James Joyce,
Bram Stroker, Samuel Beckett and Brendan
Behan did their best work while drinking in
pubs. Ah the halcyon days before we writers

Hotel Owners Fined For
Refusing Gay Couple A Room
A CHRISTIAN couple were fined last
month for refusing to allow a gay couple
the use of a double room at their hotel in
southern England, capping a case that has
drawn national attention and which the
judge himself described as very difficult.
There was a media uproar after Martyn
Hall and his partner Steven Preddy were
turned away from Chymorvah Private
Hotel in Marazion, in southwestern Eng-
land, in 2008. Husband and wife Peter and
Hazelmary Bull – both devout Christians
– had refused on religious grounds to let
the two men share a room.
In a written judgment handed down at

therford ruled that the Bulls’ behavior had
been illegal and awarded the gay couple
£1,800 each in damages.

Hall and Preddy said they were satis-
fied with the ruling, noting that they had
asked whether they could bring their dog
– but that it had never occurred to them
to check whether they themselves would
be welcome.
The Bulls had argued that their intent
was not to discriminate against homosexu-
als, saying they did not allow unmarried
heterosexuals to share a double room
either. It was also argued that, because
they lived on the ground floor of their
hotel, they had a right to have their home
life respected.
Rutherford acknowledged he found the
case “very difficult.”
“It is clearly, in my view, the case that
each side hold perfectly honorable and re-
spectable, albeit wholly contrary, views.”

Pregnant Women Say
Contraceptive Doesn’t Work
HUNDREDS of women in Britain have
complained to the medical regulator af-
ter becoming pregnant despite using a
contraceptive implant that is supposed
to work for years.
But the implant’s maker, Merck &
Co, says the failure rate isn’t excep-
tional, and that women should continue
to use it.
Implanon contains synthetic pro-
gesterone and is inserted underneath
the skin in the upper arm, where it is
supposed to stop pregnancies for up
to three years. More than one million
implants have been sold since it was
licensed in Britain in 1999.
Last month, the Medicines and
Healthcare Products Regulatory Agen-
cy said it had received more than 1,500
complaints of side effects – including
pain and scarring – linked to Implanon
since 1999. Plus, 584 women said they
had suffered unplanned pregnancies.
Ronald Rogers, a spokesman for
the New Jersey-based company, said

and 70’s. This tradition I think really started
when Romano Artoli who was the president
of Lotus in 1993 named their new model after
his granddaughter Elise. Anyway in this new
Lotus Era they are all E model names, Era by

The current range are Evora, Elise and
Extige and in the future the range will be
expanded with the Eterne, Elite, Esprit, Elan,
and a new Elise to replace the current one. So,
in 2015 if all goes according to plan Lotus will
have a total of seven E’s to choose from, all
sports cars. Prices in the order I listed them
in range from $120,000 for the four-door
sport saloon Eterne to $35,000 for least
expensive Elise. And that’s not all they have
going on at Lotus, a Lotus City Car in the
concept stage that made its debut at the 2010
Paris auto show, this is a small three-door,
four-seater hybrid (gas & electric). It doesn’t
have a name as yet as it is just conceptual
at this time, but it is powered by a 1.2 litre
three-cylinder engine called the Lotus Range

PALACE OFFICIALS last month revealed key
details about the upcoming royal wedding,
announcing that Archbishop of Canterbury
Rowan Williams will marry Prince William
and Kate Middleton when they tie the knot
on April 29.
Prince Charles’ representatives said the
wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey
will begin at 11am, kicking off a day of pomp
and ceremony on what has been declared
a national holiday throughout the United
Kingdom.
The route, which will take them through the
heart of ceremonial London, is expected to be
lined with a huge crowd of well-wishers hoping
for a glimpse of the royal couple. The carriage
will go through Parliament Square, Whitehall,
Horse Guards Parade and the Mall.
On arrival at Buckingham Palace, the couple
plan to make a brief public appearance on the
main balcony.
“We’re hoping obviously for a balcony
appearance and a kiss on the balcony,” royal
commentator Dickie Arbiter told Sky News.
The official statement also indicated that
Middleton will break with tradition and arrive
at the wedding traveling by car, not in a special
royal carriage.
Officials said the Dean of Westminster, the
Very Rev. John Hall, will conduct the service
and the Bishop of London, the Right Rev
Richard Chartres, will give the address.

last month, although so far only a handful of
people have actually paid the £15 ticket price.

ering asking guests at their wedding to make
donations to charity instead of sending them
wedding gifts.
A spokesman who asked not to be identi-
fied because of royal family policy told The
Associated Press last month this option was
being considered but no firm decision had
been made.

Wedding Sparks Debate On
‘Sexist’ Succession
LAWMAKERS say it would be the perfect
wedding gift – changing Britain’s rules of
succession so any daughter born to Prince
William and wife-to-be Kate Middleton would
enjoy an equal right to the throne.
Lawmaker Keith Vaz led a brief House of
Commons debate last month calling for an
overhaul of the 300-year-old procedures,
which many call antiquated and sexist.
Vaz said that William’s April 29 wedding
offers a once-in-a-generation chance to
make the change, which has previously been
discussed but never approved.
Any legal change would not effect Prince
Charles – heir to the throne – or William, since
neither of them have older sisters who would
leapfrog them if new rules are adopted. And
the issue would be moot for another generation
if Middleton’s first child is a boy.

Academy of Dramatic Art. She had a long,
distinguished career on film, television and
on stage, but she is best remembered for
her early roles, when she had an immediate
impact that started with her 1963 role as
Albert Finney’s love interest in the memo-
rable period piece romp Tom Jones.
York was nominated for an Oscar
for the 1969 classic They Shoot Horses,
Don’t They? and also starred in A Man
for All Seasons and other classic films
from that era.
She moved on to television and stage
work, earning a number of accolades and
awards throughout her long career. She
made appearances in several successful
TV shows including The Love Boat in the
US and Holby City in Britain.
York had two children – son Orlando
and daughter Sasha – with her husband,
Michael Wells, before they divorced. She
is survived by her children and several
grandchildren.

GERRY RAFFERTY, 63, died after suf-
fering a long illness. The Scottish singer-
songwriter
Was best known
for Baker Street, he
was also a member
of the band Stealers
Wheel, with whom
he scored another
huge hit – Stuck In
The Middle With
You.
He recorded and toured with Billy Con-
nolly as part of the Humblebums, before
forming Stealers Wheel with his friend Joe
Egan in 1972.
Baker Street, which reached number
three in 1978, was Rafferty’s most suc-
cessful record. Ironically the song, with
its haunting saxophone riff, was about the
singer’s inability to cope with the pressures
of fame as part of Stealers Wheel.
“He just wasn’t of the constitution to
deal with the music business, or to respect
it. And thus he found fame and artistic
success incompatible, and he became a
wanderer, a lonely man.”
“He recorded less and less, and less
effectively.”
In his later years, Rafferty battled with a
drinking problem and spent time in hospi-
tal in Bournemouth with liver failure.

HOW DID the traditional Irish Boiling Bacon and
Cabbage that was traditionally served on St
Patrick’s Day in Ireland become Corned Beef and
Cabbage in America?
Historically, the Irish celebrated St. Patrick’s
Day with a Boiling Bacon and Cabbage dinner.

1 pat of butter
2 teaspoons of fresh thyme (fresh or dried)
Salt to taste
Preparation:
Cover the Boiling bacon with cold water, bring
to a boil, and reduce to simmer for about 1-1/2
hours or until the boiling bacon is fork tender.
Strain the remaining stock, discard the remain-
ing vegetables, and return the stock to the pot and
the boiling bacon to the pot.
Add the chopped cabbage, placing around
the sides of the boiling bacon. Cook at a medium
heat for about 20 minutes or until the cabbage
is tender.
Remove the boiling bacon from the pot and
slice, and serve with boiled new (small) potatoes
coated with butter and chives, and a good portion
of boiled cabbage.

ENGLAND retained the Ashes in glorious style
at the Mecca of Australia’s religious sport-
ing heart, The Melbourne Cricket Ground, a
100,000 capacity stadium which has hosted
the 2000 Olympics, and other top Australian
sporting events. It was the first time England
had won a Test series in the Australian heart-
land since 1987, and were they happy! England
dominated the fourth Test leaving the Aussie
batsmen floundering in the face of an England
attack that reeked of confidence pulling off an
innings and 157 run victory. The series was
tied 1-1 before the MCG contest. Australia 98
and 258. England 513 (Jonathon Trott 160
not out). The Boxing day Test put England
2-1 up with one to play and witnessed Aussie
skipper Rick Ponting lose 40 per-cent of his
appearance fee after taking on the umpires,
arguing that Kevin Pietersen should have
been given out after being caught after the ball
nicked his bat. The umpire ruled it did not, but
Ponting persisted.
The fourth and final Test at Sydney, saw
England win for the third time by over an
innings during these Ashes, this time by an
innings and 83 runs which gave them the series
3-1. The Aussies severely missed skipper Rick
Ponting at the helm, where a finger injury that
needed surgery had him sitting out the final
encounter. Australia 280 and 281. England
644 (Alastair Cook 189, Ian Bell 115, Matt
Prior 118).
England won the first International Twenty20
match by one wicket at Adelaide, where Chris
Woakes hit the winning run on the last ball of
the match. Australia 157-4 at 20 overs. Eng-

The PDC World Darts Championships at the

witnessed a clutch of former world champions
in a highly competitive and tense game of
arrows. 15-time world champion and present
holder of the crown, Phil Taylor powered
past Gary Mawson of the US, Denmark’s Per
Laursen and England’s Peter Wright before
falling 5-2 in the quarter-finals to former BDO
champion Mark Webster. Four-time world
champion Raymond van Barneveld, crashed
out in the quarters too, after a 5-1 thrashing by
Scotland’s Gary Anderson, who after losing the
first set proceeded to eliminate the Dutchman.
The 2008 PDC champion John Part, who ap-
parently was not at full health and strength, was
beaten in the first round by Per Laursen.
Adrian Lewis, a protégé of Phil Taylor,
claimed his first major PDC title beating Gary
Anderson 7-5, in the final to collect £200,000
for his very first World title. It included an
historic nine dart game, the first ever for a
championship final.
The 25-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent,
becomes only the fifth PDC individual world
champion, since the tournament’s inception
back in 1994.
WOLFIE MAKES IT THREE
The older BDO World Darts Championships
at the Lakeside Leisure Centre, Frimley Green,
January 1-9, ran a tighter ship with a player
entry of 32 qualifiers. England skipper Martin
“Wolfie” Adams, 54, became the oldest
man to win the Championship last year, and
once again was the elder statesman in this
year’s pack. The veteran thrower beat Tony
West, John “Boy” Walton, Ross Smith, and
Martin Phillips to take on Dean Winstanley
in the final. Trina Gulliver won her ninth BDO
women’s crown, beating Rhian Edwards 2-0
in the final.
TENNIS
Tennis’ first Grand Slam tournament of the
New Year, the Australian Open, January 17-30,
moved into action last month in Sydney. Brit-
ish number one Andy Murray and fifth seed
moved easily through the opening rounds
with three set wins against Karol Beck of
Slovakia and Illya Marchenko of the Ukraine
and Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. British
women’s number one Elena Baltacha beat
Jamie Hampton, but then came a cropper
against seven time Grand Slam winner and
11th seed Justin Henin, losing 1-6,3-6. Anne
Keothavong beat Arina Rodionova of Russia,
before falling to Germany’s Andrea Petkovic,
after winning the first set 6-2.
Earlier, Andy Murray and Laura Robson
teamed up for the Hopman Cup in Perth, Aus-
tralia, a male-female version of the Davis Cup.
It proved invaluable experience for sixteen-year
old Robson, even though she lost her three
singles encounters, including a loss to French
Open champion Francesca Schiavone. Murray
won his three singles games, but the pair could
not win a doubles match that was the key to
victory. 2-1 losses to France, Italy, and the US,
saw them ousted.

AS IT TURNS out, there is only mitigated
pleasure from kicking a team when it’s
down.
For the English, who have learned
through bitter experience that sporting
success is ephemeral and so must be
feasted on when it comes, crushing
Australia in the Ashes has been as toe-
curlingly pleasant as a crackling fire in the
gloom of their inhospitable winter.
Tucked up with tea under their duvets,
they’ve stayed awake through cold nights
to savor the drama unfolding many time
zones away Down Under. There, England
is avenging previous humiliations dealt
out by Australia when it was cricket’s all-
conquering No 1.
Australia skittled out for 98 in Mel-
bourne; England showing how pathetic that
Australian first innings was by scoring 513
on the same wicket.
Australia’s opening collapse to 3-2
after winning the toss and opting to bat in
Adelaide; England showing how pathetic
that was by declaring on 620-5, with Kevin
Pietersen alone – out for 227 – nearly
outscoring the entire Australian team’s
first innings total.
And so it went on. England moved on
to win fifth and final test, too, victorious
in their first test series win Down Under
since 1987, before Australia put a lock
on the Ashes for much of the next two
decades.

At times, it all seemed too easy. And
that doesn’t bode well for the overall

Graeme McDowell fired off an eight under 62
course record in Hawaii, during the final round
of the Tournament of Champions, January 8,
but still left him one stroke short of the play-

The New Years Honours List saw Graeme
McDowell get the MBE. The 31-year-old North-
ern Ireland golfer from Portrush, became the
first Briton in 40 years to win the US Open, and
his long putt at the Ryder Cup ultimately gave
the Europeans victory. English referee Howard
Webb who was in charge of the bad-tempered
World Cup Final between Spain and the Nether-
lands got a MBE too. There was also MBEs for
former rugby union star Mike Catt and rugby
league commentator Ray French.
STEVENAGE & CRAWLEY TOWN
PROVIDE FA CUP SHOCKS
The third round of the FA Cup, January
8-9-10-11, witnessed the big clubs mix it
up with the lower division sides and various
minnows. Four premier clubs were ousted,
four managed ties that put them in to replays,
and two non-league survivors made their exits,
while Crawley Town made it through. Biggest
shock of the round took place at Stevenage of
Division Two who were just promoted from the
Conference this year. A Mike Williamson own
goal in the 50th minute put the host’s one up
against Newcastle Utd, and Michael Bostwick
netted five minutes later adding to the score-
line. Newcastle’s Joey Barton smashed a 30
yarder in the second minute of injury time, then
Peter Winn struck again for Stevenage in the
final minute to give the home side an historic
3-1 victory. Sunderland have exploded into
one of the better teams in the Premier League
recently, but Notts County stunned them in
the fifth minute at Roker Park to take the lead
with a goal by Craig Westcarr. Lee Hughes
got another for the County in the 75th minute,
while a successful Darren Bent penalty three
minutes from time did not change the result as
the Midlanders chalked up a 2-1 win. Four min-
utes from the break, Shane Long hit the back of
the net for Reading, in their home tie with West
Bromich Albion. The visitors had Jonas Olsson
sent off in the 59th minute which did not help,
and the Championship outfit held on for a 1-0
victory. Division One’s Southampton scored a
goal in each half, courtesy of Lee Barnard and
Guilherme do Prado, giving them a 2-0 win
over new premier league side Blackpool.
Arsenal could only manage a 1-1 draw with
Leeds at the Emirates, Stoke were held at home
by Cardiff City 1-1, and Doncaster Rovers kept
visitors Wolves to a 2-2 tie, while Manchester
City drew 2-2 at Leicester. In the replays how-
ever, the big clubs barreled through.

Town looking for a place in the football league
next season, edged in to the fourth round after
an injury time netting by Sergio Torres that
gave them a 2-1 home win over Derby County.
Craig McAllister put Crawley ahead on the half
trophy kept out of Australian hands, it isn’t
heartening to see such a proud cricketing
power so reduced.
Allegations of match-fixing leveled
at Pakistan made 2010 a sorry year for
cricket. With 50 test wickets before his
19th birthday, left-arm seamer Moham-
mad Amir radiated promise as a future
star. But he, fellow bowler Mohammad
Asif and former captain Salman Butt
could – and should – be banned from the
game for life if an anti-corruption tribunal
meeting this week determines that they
conspired to bowl deliberate no-balls for
money against England last August.
Below the top-ranked test teams of
India, South Africa and England, cricket
is hardly overflowing with treasures to
make the heart race. Sri Lanka’s Muttiah
Muralitharan retired from test cricket last
July after taking his 800th wicket in the tra-
ditional format, a record that could last for
ages. Other than cherished memories of
Brian Lara, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney
Walsh, the West Indies offer little.
CREDIT
Credit, of course, to England for making
Australia look so bare. Beyond outstanding
individual play – the batting of Alastair
Cook, Jonathan Trott and Pietersen and
the array of bowling pace, swing and spin
– England impresses with its discipline
and collective high spirit. The players’
now-famous celebratory “sprinkler”
dance – jerkily spinning around, arms
up, like water sprinklers – looks mighty
silly but testifies to a team rich with self-
confidence.
On the opposite side, Australia offered
plodding seamers and a pair of opening
batsmen in Shane Watson and Phil Hughes

Derby’s chance of taking advantage decreased
considerably after they missed a penalty. The
two remaining non-league sides made their
farewells. Southern Conference outfit Dover
Town were soon in an uphill battle at Hud-
dersfield, after two early goals in the seventh
and eighth minutes by Scott Arfield and Gary
Roberts had them backfooted. Huddersfield
won 2-0.
Bolton took out York City 2-0 at Burnden
Park. Goal-feast of the round was Fulham’s
6-2 demolition of Peterborough, that included
a hat-trick by Diomansy Kamara, and Chel-
sea’s 7-0 slamming of Ipswich Town. Fourth
Round, January 29-30.
CARLING CUP
The first leg of the Carling Cup semi-finals,
January 11-12, saw West Ham Utd beat fel-
low Premier league strugglers Birmingham
City 2-1, even though they dropped down to
ten men after 59 minutes when Victor Obinna
was sent off. Mark Noble put the hosts ahead
after thirteen minutes, while Liam Ridgewell
equalized for the blues in the 55th minute.
Carleton Cole got the winner for West Ham
twelve minutes from the end. Championship
side Ipswich Town, threw off the trauma of a
recent 7-0 drubbing by Chelsea, and stunned
Arsenal with a goal by Tamas Priskin in the
78th minute at Portman Road, that proved the
only netting of the game. The East Anglians
had just fired of coach Roy Keane.
In the second legs, Arsenal triumphed 3-0,
and Birmingham won 3-1 and will meet each
other in the final at Wembley.
SCOTTISH SOCCER
The old firm clash at the Ibrox Stadium be-
tween Rangers and Celtic January 2, produced
a 50,000-plus crowd, but Walter Smith’s men
could not turn the benefit of a home advantage
in to SPL points. A lively first half kept things
level, before Georgio Samaras found an open-
ing for the Hoops in the 62nd minute. Eight min-
utes later Bougherra bought Samaras down in
the box, and the Greek striker stepped up for
the penalty to make it 2-0. Rangers constantly
lobbed high balls over the Celtic defense but
to no avail, giving the green and whites a 2-0
win that put them four points atop of the SPL.
Rangers quest for the Scottish championship
took another nasty turn January 22, where a
Ryan Stevenson goal in the 77th minute, gave
Hearts a 1-0 win over Walter Smith’s visitors.

Maguire got a hat-trick, while St Mirren stung
Peterhead 6-1 in an away victory. Celtic
traveled to third division’s Berwick Rangers
where goals by Daniel Majstorovic (17th) and
a Freddie Ljungberg strike eight minutes from
time gave the Hoops a 2-0 scoreline. A small
crowd at the Ibrox saw Rangers ease passed
Kilmarnock 3-0, with goals by Lee McCulloch,
Lyle Lafferty and a penalty by Steven Whit-
taker. The last remaining Junior side, Highland
League champions Buckie Thistle went out at

COMEBACK
That there were even, at one point,
loose mutterings of a possible comeback
by spinner Shane Warne showed how
Australia has been forced to rifle through
its bottom drawers for options, like a
hard-up man hoping to turn up overlooked
valuables.
One of the rare bright spots was the
fifth test debut of Pakistan-born Usman
Khawaja, an exciting batsman who graced
his first innings 37 with a combination of
sub-continental wristy shots and gutsy
Australian technique.
The hope now must be that the Austra-
lians, so admirable for taking their sports
more seriously than most, respond as they
have previously to sporting setbacks – with
renewed focus and determination.
After Australia fell behind Britain at
the 2008 Olympic Games – both in golds
and total medals – its government last
year pumped euro150m ($200m) worth
of new funding into sports even as it
trimmed elsewhere. John Coates, head of
Australia’s Olympic Committee, hailed it
as “the biggest funding injection to sport
in our nation’s history.” The aim now is to
outdo the British at their home Olympics in
London in 2012 and, as Coates said last
May, “rain on their parade.”
Aussie cricket needs to show similar
fight. Because if this sorry Ashes display
proves to be the harbinger of a long and
dispiriting Australian decline, all of cricket
will lose.

QATAR CONCERNS
FIFA’s decision to name Qatar as the host-
ing nation of the 2022 World Cup continues to
receive criticism. Media reports have revealed
that Qatar has spent nearly $30m on recent
FIFA projects that may have assisted in the bid
that gave them the World Cup. Qatar sponsored
and paid for the CAF conference for African
nations in Angola, extended financial aid to the
Argentine FA, and a Qatar company bought the
Argentinean TV rights. They moved the annual
meeting of the Asian Football Conference to
Qatar and picked up the cost, and paid for a big
stadium in Thailand. All these projects involved
members on the voting executive committee,
who would decide the 2022 World Cup loca-
tion. They also hired big names like Zinedane
Zidane, Roger Milla, Ronald de Boer and
even Archbishop Desmond Tutu to push their
cause. While allegations of corruption continue
to arise, FIFA has rejected the criticism saying
these were legitimate business dealings and
were not illegal under FIFA rules. Speculation
that the Qatar World Cup will be moved to
January, because July temperatures in the
desert nation touch 50 degrees centigrade
may be sound and practical. The European
nations however, who rely on big revenues
from their own domestic leagues at this time,
find it monetarily daunting and it seems much
discussion is ahead before a January World
Cup is sanctioned.
SPORTING PASSINGS
Former British heavyweight champion Gary
Mason, died in a road accident while riding his
bicycle in London last month. The Clapham
born Jamaican’s boxing career was on a
definite upturn in 1991, when he faced Lennox
Lewis for the British and European titles. During
the fight, an old eye injury resurrected itself and
the ref stopped the fight in favour of Lewis.
It was his only defeat in 38 fights. The injury
turned out to be detached retina and the British
Boxing Board would not give him a license to
fight again.
He fought twice in Canada afterwards, but
the injury halted what could have been a daz-
zling career. He retired from the ring in 1994.
He won 34 of his fights by knockout, taking
down big American names like Tyrell Briggs
and James Tillis. Gary Mason was 48.
Signed for Bolton Wanderers as a fourteen
year old for ten quid in 1946, he proved the best
deal that the Trotters ever made. Nat Lofthouse
would play in over 500 games for Bolton and
scored 285 goals between his signing and his
retirement. During 33 appearances for Eng-
land, he scored 30 goals, including a winner
against Austria that earned him the nick-name
“The Lion of Vienna.” His two goals against the
Munich disaster stricken Manchester United
in the 1958, FA Cup final, gave Bolton their
last Cup victory.
A knee injury forced him into retirement
in 1960, but his association with his beloved
Bolton continued as trainer, coach, chief scout
and President of the club.
He recieved the OBE in 1994. Nat Lofthouse
was 85.

Against Ghana
ENGLAND will play a friendly against Ghana
in March, and has pulled out of a match
against Thailand.
England will play World Cup quarterfinalist
Ghana for the first time at Wembley Stadium
on March 29, three days after facing Wales in

FORMER Liverpool winger Ryan Babel
became the first player to be charged with
improper conduct by England’s Football As-
sociation over a Twitter posting last month.
Babel posted a digitally altered picture of
referee Howard Webb wearing a Manchester
United shirt after being angered by his deci-
sions in Liverpool’s FA Cup loss last month.
Babel also wrote on Twitter: “And they call

Richard Butcher has died at his home.

TWO OF Britain’s leading soccer com-
mentators were taken off the air January
25 after being heard making off-the-air
comments deemed to be sexist.
Andy Gray’s contract was terminated
the next day and Richard Keys resigned
two days later following remarks about
two female game officials and a team
executive.
Gray and Keys were originally dis-
ciplined for derogatory comments
about Sian Massey’s suitability as a
lineswoman for a Premier League game
the commentators were working on the
previous weekend for Sky Sports.
The two commentators, who have
been respected voices in soccer for
the past 20 years, also criticized the
ability of former Premier League official
Wendy Toms and a column written by
West Ham executive Karren Brady in the
Sun newspaper that day. Plus, videos
surfaced later showing other off-air
incidents involving Gray and Keys.
The men privately apologized to
their employer. Sky said the two were
originally warned and “reminded of
their responsibilities.”
But, as the issue gathered more
controversy both men were no longer
with Sky.
A number of prominent TV personali-
ties have spoken up the men’s behalf,
including Top Gear presenter Jeremy
Clarkson.
