Open-Book Assessment (Mood & Mission) List three aspects of Srila
Prabhupada’s mood and mission, as revealed in the preface to Bhagavad-Gita,
and comment on the importance of these aspects for ISKCON. Preface is something which display the background under which the book has been published. In the Preface Srila Prabhupada is preparing the audience to understand the Bhagvad Gita as it is. This preface was not there in Bhagvad Gita originally published by Mc Millan as they wanted to restrict the size of the book to 400 pages. That book was not carrying any illustration and the explanation to most of verses were also mission. Sill the book was accepted well in the society and Srila Prabhupada started getting acknowledged but he was not really satisfied. Later on when the demand for original complete version increased, the book in the present form was published by Mc Millan. The mood of the Srila Prabhupada can be described in following points: 1. He was feeling satisfied as he was able to present the Bhagvad Gita as it is without any dilution. The message of Lord Krishna as conveyed to Arjuna was presented as it is. The format of the book was original verse, its English transliteration, word-for-word Sanskrit-English equivalents, translations and purports. This makes the book very authentic and scholarly and makes the meaning self-evident. 2. His other mood was that of gratitude towards his spiritual master and his previous acharyas. When he used to get any complement for his achievement, he used to tell that he doesn’t deserve any credit for the same rather his spiritual master deserve all the credits as he could achieve the task only at the instance of his spiritual master. 3. The other aspect his mood is that he was stern in conveying that we should not accept the mayavadi interpretations of the vedic scriptures as they add their own explanations based on individual interest, while he wanted to convey the message as it is. Lord Caitanya clearly says that anyone who tries to understand Bhagavad-gītā from the Māyāvādī point of view will commit a great blunder. The result of such a blunder will be that the misguided student of Bhagavad-gītā will certainly be bewildered on the path of spiritual guidance and will not be able to go back home, back to Godhead. Three aspects of the Mission of Srila Parbhupada as depicted in the preface to Bhagvad Gita are described in following points: 1. The main mission of Srila Prabhupada is to present the mission of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna.Srila Prabhupada wanted to present the will of Krsna and not of any materially influential person. Srila Prabhupada in writing the book was to present this Bhagvad Gita as it is to guide the conditioned soul to the same purpose for which Krsna descends to this planet once in a day of Brahma, which is equivalent to 8600 million earth years.According to him, to interpret the Bhagvad Gita without any reference to the will of Gita is the greatest offense. In order to save oneself from this offense, one has to understand the Lord as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as He was directly understood by Arjuna, Lord Kṛṣṇa's first disciple. Such understanding of Bhagavad-gītā is really profitable and authorized for the welfare of human society in fulfilling the mission of life.
2. Srila Prabhupada wanted to educate the central point of Bhagvad Gita to
the humanity. A living entity is happily the part and parcel of the Lord, and thus his natural function is to render immediate service to the Lord. By the spell of illusion one tries to be happy by serving his personal sense gratification in different forms which will never make him happy. Instead of satisfying his own personal material senses, he has to satisfy the senses of the Lord. That is the highest perfection of life. The Lord wants this, and He demands it. One has to understand this central point of Bhagavad- gītā. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is teaching the whole world this central point, and because we are not polluting the theme of Bhagavad- gītā As It Is. 3. He has commented that in case even if only one person becomes pure devotee of the lord by studying this Bhagvad Gita as it is, we shall consider out attempt is successful.
