Honor System, Exam, Homework and Lab Report Policy

All examinations in this course will be administered in accordance with the ECE Honor Sys-
tem. If you have a question about the ECE Honor System, contact your instructor or a
member of the ECE Student Council

2
ECE 723 Adjunct Microwave Laboratory

The ECE 723 Adjunct Microwave Laboratory is designed to run in parallel with ECE 723.
The time commitment is estimated to be in average two to three hours a week (including
preparation).

• Laboratory Manual:
A Laboratory Manual describing the laboratory will be posted on the class webpage.

• Teaching Assistant:
Inwon Suh, Use email for simple questions: suhi@ece.edu

• Office Hours: To posted on the class webpage.

• Laboratory Plan:

Lab 1: Measurement of a) the scattering parameters versus frequency, b) power gain

compression, and c) noise figure versus frequency of a commercial (amateur radio) low-
noise amplifier.
Lab 2: Nonlinear reponse of RF amplifiers under multitone excitations
Lab 3: Design, layout, fabrication, and testing of an amplifier or oscillator of your choice.
To ensure a variety of design projects, the number of teams per types of amplifier or oscillator
is limited to two.

Due Date Lab # Delivery

Jan 24 1 Lab 1 report
Feb 4 2 Lab 2 report
Feb 9 3 Design project proposal
Feb 16-18 3 Design Layout approval
Feb 18-21 3 Design Layout Delivery
Mar 4 3 Design Project report
Mar 7 & 11 3 Presentations: Poster
A short Laboratory Report is due for each lab and will be turned in by the specified due
date. The result of the Design Project (Laboratory 3) will be presented orally the last two
days of class. Your presentation should be supported by a powerpoint presentation. In
addition a single page poster summarizing your results will be distributed to the class and
be posted in the class webpage together with the lab proposal, presentation and report. The
ECE723 posters will also be displayed on the Caldwell/Dreese bridge.

Grading Scheme: Lab 1 Report 1/4, Lab 2 Report 1/4, Lab 3 Report 1/4, Lab 3 Poster

EE 723 — Laboratory Policy

1. A sign-up sheet will be placed on the door of Room 305 Caldwell Lab. Schedule your
fabrication and measurement time at least one day in advance; you can reserve up to
2 hours per day, twice a week. Open time is, however, available on a first come, first
served basis if the time slot has not been reserved.

2. Read your Laboratory Manual and make a plan of work before coming to the lab.

3. You can obtain the laboratory key against your ID card at the front desk of the EE
Department (Room 205 Dreese Lab) which closes at 5:00 pm. The receptionist should
check that you are on the class roster (remind him/her to do so!) Please return the
key to the front desk before 5:00pm, in case other groups may need it in the morning
of next day. If your group prefers doing the labs during EVENINGs (after 5:00pm) or
WEEKENDs, please contact the TA one day in advance to check a lab key.

4. Make sure that the laboratory door is CLOSED when you leave the room
– even for a short period! The key holder is responsible for the material, turning
off equipment and lights, and closing the door when done.

5. Take care of the equipment in general and the measurement cables and connectors
in particular (refer to Appendix 5.5 of your Laboratory Manual). The measure-
ment will be made using SMA terminated coaxial test cables. Do Not disconnect
the SMA/coaxial test cables from the Network Analyzer. Place all the calibration
standards back into the box when the lab is done.

6. Read soldering, in Appendix 5.4 of your Laboratory Manual to insure a proper use of
the tools and to assure your protection. If you are uncomfortable with a particular
laboratory procedure request help from the Instructor.

7. Report damage or malfunction immediately.

Honor Rule: I have read the laboratory regulations and agree to abide by them. I take
responsibility for my acts and will not take part in dangerous behavior endangering myself
or others.
