Introduction

The Problem

Background of the study

The researchers plan to find any materials which are possible as mulches. Since
mulching is one of the simplest and most convenient practices you can do when it
comes to planting. It is used to minimize the evaporation rate of water in plants. This
kind of system helps in conserving water and it prevents weed growths. The example
materials of organic mulches can be found in the surrounding such as (stones, sawdust,
peanut shells, corn cobs, ipil-ipil, compost, coffee grounds, leaves, and other
substances or raw materials). Those are materials needed for mulching, since they are
organic mulches, they can also consider as a soil enhancer.

Statement of the problem

This study seek to determine the growth and yield performance of Pechay(Brassica
napus L.) in Different Organic Mulches.
Specifically, to answer the following questions:

What is the growth and yield performance of pechay using the rocks, corn cobs,
coconut leaves and sawdust?
What is the growth and yield performance of pechay without mulches?
Is there any significant difference in the growth and yield performance of pechay using
different mulches?

Significance of the study

Using mulches has great advantages. It conserves moisture which means frequent
watering is not necessary anymore. It prevents the growth of weeds as well as erosion
of the soil. Much more it can be become a soil enhancer too.

These organic mulches are accessible to gardeners not only to those who grow
vegetables but it can also be made available to ornamental growers since all of these
materials are found in the locality.

The following are the importance of mulching in vegetable production:

1. Mulching the area will prevent soil erosion.
2. It conserves water.
3. Proper mulching in summer months keeps the soil cooler.
4. Organic mulches enrich the soil as they decay and provides a better environment
for plant growth.
5. Mulches help plants by gradually increasing soil fertility.
6. Most mulch also provides excellent weed control.
Definition of Terms

Mulch – is any materials or substances spread on the ground to protect plant roots from
heat, cold or drought or to keep fruit clean.
Mulches can be classified as inorganic or organic. Inorganic mulches include plastics
and other non-plastic materials. Whereas organic mulches include straw, compost,
sawdust and similar materials. (INGO 2005)

Mulch simply a protective layer of a material that is spread on top of the soil. It prevents
the soil from erosion, conserves water and prevents weed growth.

Conceptual framework

The conceptual framework below shows the relationship of dependent and independent
variables of the study. This research uses the IPO model (Input – Process – Output).
The input or the independent variables of the study are corn – cobs, straw\hay,
sawdust, and leaves, which will be used to fest the growth and yield performance of
pechay which serves as the dependent variable of the study.
