Applications of Augmented Reality in Urban Design Visualisations

INTRODUCTION

Augmented reality has been around for quite a while METHODS OF DAT.\ and the advances and applications have been

COLLECTION gradual. However since 2009 with the advances of

smartphones, the technology and use for augmented applications has rocketed, With more people connectPROGRESS PLAN ing to social networks and having an internet connection at hand, the possibilities of AR (augmented reality) are endless,

Quantitative collection methods - Analysing data using graphs and studying patterns and trends from previous studies.

During the project data will be collected using varlMETHODS OF DATA ous techniques and practices. These include: - COLLECTION

Interviews - Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing 1----------------. (CAPI). Arranging an interview via Instant Messenger

1. Observational and quasi-observational techniques - Looking at the

_.. general publics reaction to augmented reality technology. Observing their .-=~~~ behavior at a given moment and situation.

Web based questionnaires: aimed at architects and designers and the general public.

Qualitative Data Collection methods: -

- Pure observation

- Trace measures

- Entrapment measures

2. Projective techniques - - Collect relative feedback via non verbal communication, i.e. Feedback forms.

Focus groups - To test the application prototype during the implementation and testing stage.

Contextual Analysis of case studies looking at relationship patterns.

Learning & Information Services. Journals, research papers, books, etc.

The main influence.s for this project stemmed from the introduction to Aug- ~ mented Reality applications in computer games. This lead to research on

how this technology was being used in Architecture and in the media. :"::

Initial Progress Plan showing the course of action to complete the Major Research Project.

The time scale will be split into two different phases. The red phase will consist of mainly the research and report writing on the background of Augmented reality in urban design.

The second blue phase will be the main urban design scheme for the project and will set the foundations for assessment 2 where the interactive application will be developed.
