Hindrances to implementing RA 9003 on

a Municipal level
 Recommended solutions are expensive
 Budgetary constraints
 Lack of know-how / expertise
Lack of support from the National Government
This Proposal Helps LGUs Comply With:

RA 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act),

and

 RA 8749 (Clean Air Act)

Market Waste Utilization

Biodegradable municipal market can be processed into

organic fertilizer.
Decreases volume of waste brought into open
dumpsites.
Decreases the methane released into the atmosphere

RA 9003, Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of

2000 mandates that segregation and collection of solid
waste at source shall be conducted at the barangay
level specifically for biodegradable, compostable and
recyclable waste….
Farm Waste Utilization

Minimize burning of farm waste and reduce Global

Warming.
 Convert farm waste into bio-fertilizers.
 Reduce cost of bio-fertilizer.
Our Approach
We propose a technology transfer scheme that will
allow the Municipality to address the pressing
problems of MSW at the least cost possible.

Using rapid composting inoculants that we will

provide, all biodegradable waste shall be converted
into bio-fertilizers.
What are Biofertilizers?
'Biofertilizers' are substances which contain living microorganisms
which, when applied to soil, colonizes the rhizosphere or the interior
of the plant and promotes growth by increasing the supply or
availability of primary nutrients to the host plant. Biofertilizers add
nutrients through the natural processes of Nitrogen fixation,
solubilizing phosphorus, and stimulating plant growth through the
synthesis of growth promoting substances

Biofertilizers can be expected to reduce the use of chemical

fertilizers and pesticides. The microorganisms in biofertilizers restore
the soil's natural nutrient cycle and build soil organic matter.
Major agricultural crops wastes and processing residues with potential bio-
fertilizer use available in the Philippines
Crop Waste Products and Processing Residues
 Rice straw, hulls
 Corn cobs, husks, leaves, stalks
Coconut coconut husk (as coir dust)
 Sugarcane sugarcane tops, bagasse, mudpress
Banana trunk, leaves, reject fruits, peels
Pineapple plant, crown, peel, core, pulp
 Coffee pulp
 Mango rejects, peel, pulp
 Tobacco midribs, reject leaves
 Abaca leaves
 Cacao pods, core
 Cassava trunk, leaves, peel, washings
 Peanut plant, pods, reject beans
Mung bean plant, pods, reject beans
 Vegetables rejects
Biofertilizer Production Through Rapid Composting
Rapid composting is a process in which microbes
are introduced into a pile of biodegradable materials
to produce high grade compost or bio-fertilizers.
Composting normally takes 21 days, depending
upon the biodegradable materials being composted.
The compost is cured for another 7 to 10 days so it
will be “sweetened”. This will allow the biological
agents to convert inorganic compounds to more
suitable and highly assimiable nutrients. This in turn
will provide for better plant nutrition.
The Process
 Weigh the corresponding raw materials.
Moisture content of the raw materials must be
considered in the weighing.
Shred / chop the raw materials, if necessary.
Blend the raw materials with the inoculants to
achieved homogeneity.
Turn the raw materials every other day (7X).
At the end of the curing period, the biofertilizer is
ready for use.
