Put learning
into action
Lots of learning goes on inside a Dalhousie
classroom, where you’ll have the chance to work
with award-winning professors and enjoy a 14:1
student-to-professor ratio — one of the best in
Canada. Lots more learning happens when you
start working with other students outside of class,
and when you step into the real world and start
applying what you’ve learned.

There are all kinds of ways to put what you

learn into practice even before you graduate.
Whether it’s through internships, group projects,
research, co-op terms, field trips or community
involvement, you’ll find yourself engaged in
learning that extends far beyond the textbooks
and the classroom.

A group of 20 commerce students put their

expertise into practise when they took part in the
2009 Jeux de Commerce, a national competition
involving nine other Canadian universities. The
event pits teams against one another in solving
challenging case studies. The Dalhousie students
celebrated victories in every category they
entered, including accounting, marketing and
business strategy.

The commerce students are like many others

across campus who test their theory and
knowledge in real-world situations. Those
in Health Promotion, Occupational Therapy,
Nursing, Kinesiology and Physiotherapy all take
part in community-related projects.

On other parts of the campus, music, theatre and

costume studies students bring their learning to
life on stage, in vibrant color and sound. Student
productions draw audience members to the
Dalhousie Arts Centre from across the campus
and throughout Halifax.

Co-op programs can give you the best of both
worlds. By alternating classroom learning with
workplace experience, you develop practical
skills while you learn. You’ll earn money to offset
the cost of your education, gain valuable career
contacts and start applying your knowledge
long before graduation.

You might land a co-op placement on campus,

Dalhousie students have experienced these co-op

Professors
who innovate
At Dalhousie, you’ll learn with professors who
are experts in their fields. Brilliant minds that are
advancing knowledge. Leaders who carry their
passion for discovery directly into the classroom
where they will engage you, motivate you and
even help shape your life’s direction.

Experts who mentor
Halifax’s friendliness makes learning and living a great
experience. One student from another province was
amazed that drivers almost always stop for pedestrians.
She drew a comparison to the classroom. “Our
professors stop for us, too.”

Nursing’s Colleen Kiberd is a professor who ‘stops’

for students. Described as “supporting students with
her whole heart,” she’s a multiple winner of the student-
chosen Nurse Educator Appreciation Award. “How
we mould our students is a reflection of ourselves
as educators. I want my graduates to be fearless and
energetic, yet supremely caring.”

Other professors use unique teaching methods to inspire

students. John Gosse, earth sciences, pours a glass of
beer to illustrate the concept of exponential relationships.
He measures the froth’s thickness and how quickly it
dissipates. (The head disappears exponentially, somewhat
like the decay of a radioactive mass.) “Once students see
it illustrated this way, the concept will never leave them,”
says Dr. Gosse, who teaches the course, “Earthquakes,
Volcanoes and Other Natural Disasters.”

In professor Amal Ghazal’s “Food for Thought: History

and the Culinary Cultures of the Islamic World,” the
final class includes a feast. Students learn how food
reveals connections among civilizations. They collect
and research the history of recipes relevant to their
course content. The result? A final banquet that’s
educational and delicious.

Music matters. It's a reflection of what is happening in the

world and also changes who we are and what we believe. My
course uncovers the meaning behind the music you love.

Jacqueline Warwick, Music Professor

RESEARCH

At Dalhousie, you’ll learn with professors, researchers and other students who are
making an impact in all areas of life. You’ll be immersed in a research-intensive
environment where discovery is second nature; where you can help create
new knowledge.

We conduct more than $128 million in funded research annually, leading to

breakthroughs in countless areas – climate change, medical treatments, literary
history, sustainable energy, political science, development economics and much
more. Our research extends into many sectors, including the arts and social sciences,
health professions and business. What’s more, we’re affiliated with more than 40
research centres, institutes and technical facilities, spreading research throughout
the community, the country and the world.

At Dalhousie, your professors will bring their excitement

for discovery directly to you. You may even play a role
in their research by working in a lab or on a project.
Here, you'll work and learn with some of the world’s

and in the game
Whether you’re a member of a Dal Tigers’ varsity
squad, an intramural athlete or someone who
shapes your own fitness routines, you can stay
active and involved at Dalhousie. All students
have access to Dalplex, our recreation centre.
It features an Olympic-sized swimming pool, cardio
machines, squash courts, fitness classes and one of
the best rock-climbing structures in Eastern Canada.
Intramural teams compete for supremacy in all
kinds of sports: basketball, broomball, flag football,
hockey, rock climbing, soccer, ultimate Frisbee,
water polo, volleyball and dodgeball. Recreational
sports appeal to hundreds of students, and are a
great way to stay fit and meet new people.

A third of our Tigers are Academic All-Canadians,

a national honour bestowed on high-achieving

So what about the

weather?
In Nova Scotia, we embrace our changing seasons and
welcome the unique beauty that autumn, winter,
spring and summer bring to our province.

Because Halifax is a coastal city, we enjoy a temperate climate.

The ocean is part of our life here, so sailing and water sports
are enjoyed through spring, summer and autumn.
Year-round surfing and hiking is popular along our coast.
Spring is a wonderful season of renewal, and summer’s
warm temperatures draw everyone outside to bask in relaxed
activities and sun-drenched days. The autumn is spectacular
in Nova Scotia, as cooler temperatures transform our trees
and woodlands into panoramas of vivid reds, golds and yellows.
Winter is crisp and fresh, and the perfect opportunity for
skiing and outdoor skating. (And if you’ve never built a
snowman, be sure it’s on your “to do” list.)

Average temperatures in Halifax range from a comfortable

10°C in fall to -5°C in winter; from 4°C in early spring to
18°C and warmer in summer.
