1.

Based on the concept of deliberate practice, list the five steps that lead to
excellence.

Deliberate practice involves the following five steps:

1. Approach performance with the goal of getting better and better.

2. As you are performing, focus on what is happening and why you are
doing things the way you do.

3. Once your task is finished, seek performance feedback from expert

sources, and the more sources the better.

2. Provide Ricardo with specific recommendations on how he can “deliberately

practice” his presentation skills.

Ricardo can deliberately practice his presentation skills in the following ways:

1. Approach performance with the goal of getting better and better.

A specific goal for Ricardo will be to decide to present the proposal for

the competition. He could practice by speaking to his colleagues about

his ideas as a smaller goal leading up to the final product, the end goal,
and the end of the presentation.
sh is

Deliberate practice relies on small, achievable, well-defined steps that

Th

help you work your way towards meaningful improvement. These steps
should take into account your current knowledge and skill level and push
those boundaries little by little, consistently expanding your abilities. For
example, by week two in the group progress- Ricardo should set the goal
to openly speak in front of his peers on his findings thus far.

Setting smaller goals before the big one is key in this step. Hopefully with
this practice and help using smaller goals as a tactic, the competition
could be won by Ricardo’s team!

2. As you are performing, focus on what is happening and why you are
doing things the way you do.

Ricardo should take note that the competition may rely on him practicing
his goal and eliminating the fear of public speaking. He must remember
that to get over this goal and practice is the key to success. The key to
passing through each round of the selection process will be to get people
on board with their idea and convincing them of its potential- this cannot
be done without improvement in Ricardo’s weak areas.

3. Once your task is finished, seek performance feedback from expert

sources, and the more sources the better.

Ricardo should ask for feedback from his colleagues. Perhaps they could

give suggestions on what to improve on and give recognition for the

co
progress he is making. Another option is for Ricardo to record himself.

4. Build mental models of your job, your situation, and your organization.

Ricardo’s boss can see Ricardo being the winner of the competition. It
o

would not be unrealistic for Ricardo to picture himself as the winner and

the perks that go along with winning. The winning team will receive a

substantial cash prize alongside significant prestige. Ricardo should

picture what it would be like to not only have that status, but also finally
be over his fear of public speaking.

5. Repeat steps 1–4 continually and on an ongoing basis.

Of course, without dedication- None of these steps are worthwhile. If you

sh is

put in the time and effort to tap into the proven principles of deliberate
practice, you’re sure to see some progress.
