The Ceramic Back Welding is a non-metallic ceramic material which is temporarily attached to the
reverse side of a weld while helping to support a full penetration weld. Individually sized and cut to
a specific length, these disposable tiles are flexible and easily adaptable to many different weld
configurations. The cost savings potential makes this an attractive alternative to arc gouging and
rewelding full penetration welds.
The composition of this non-metallic material is an ideal alternative to steel or copper backing bars.
The quality and consistency within the ceramic composition eliminates any concern for
metallurgical mismatch in either the base material or weld metal. The density of such a material not
only helps support and define the molten weld metal, but more importantly, effectively resists
moisture pick-up that can seriously affect the weld deposit.

Individual tiles are assembled on an adhesive tape which can then be fitted to any specific length.
Individual tiles can also be purchased and used in conjunction with a metal tracking system. Once
attached to the reverse side of the weldment, preheat can be utilized. The adhesive characteristics
permit the weld to be preheated up to 500ºF (270ºC) without releasing. Following the weld
completion, both the tiles and tape are easily removed, exposing a consistent uniform weld bead.
Selecting the proper ceramic is specific to a given weld joint design. Each welding process (SMAW,
FCAW, MIG, etc.) necessitates a different technique to successfully utilize this material. Because of
the many different ceramic tile configurations, careful evaluation is recommended prior to
implementation.
The tape comes in a variety of styles and configurations. The cost saving advantages are easily
justified in both reduced labor and increased productivity. Part numbers and package options make
selection easy.

Welding Applications & Procedures

In the past, full penetration welding involved costly backgouging, grinding, and rewelding. With
Cerbaco Ltd. non metallic weld backings you can achieve X-ray quality, full penetration welds from
one side and in a single pass. The result is a finished high quality weld and a savings of labor,
materials and time. Cerbaco weld backings are manufactured in many different configurations and
in formulas for the diverse conditions encountered when welding anything from light gauge sheet
metal to heavy metal fabrication. Cerbaco weld backings can be used to compensate for poor fit-
ups, and is a valuable tool when welding conditions are not ideal or where the back side of a weld
joint is inaccessable.

Cerbaco weld backings are non metallic, non hygroscopic, neutral, and unlike metal backing bars,
do not become part of the finished weld. When properly positioned and attached to the back side of
a weld joint, your welds can be free of defects, eliminating rework and cleanup associated with poor
root welds.

One-sided one-pass and one-sided multi-pass welds are possible with Cerbaco weld backings. Our
backings suport molten weld metal over a wide range of welding heats resulting in uniform back
beads of finished quality.
PROCEDURE

Step 1. Start with an open root:

Backing will vary depending upon root opening, joint design and welding process.

Step 2. Apply backing:

In most applications, backing is applied using our adhesive foil on which the backing is assembled.
The area to which the backing will be attached should be free of loose rust, dirt and oil.

Step 3. Weld:

Establish your arc and weld a root pass.

Step 4. Remove backing to reveal finished backbead:
