Abbreviations and definitions

ALARM
Message by which the unit signals the occurrence of an event. The alarm is indicated by an audible tone and/or a
message (or icon) on the display.

ANTENNA HEIGHT
The height in which the antenna is installed.

APM
Audio and PTT Modem. The APM is designed for use in applications, which requires long distance control of
radios through a 4 or 2 wire leased lines. The modems use in-band signalling for transfer of PTT and Squelch,
and FSK data for transfer of alarms and Main/Standby selection.

ARC
With Audio Remote Control it is possible to extend the audio and PTT signals for a transmitter/receiver
combination consisting of one main and one standby transceiver.
One or two line pair is used for each transceiver and contains both PTT and audio in both directions.

AUX
Auxiliary

BAUD
Transmission rate unit of measurement for binary coded data (bit per second).

BIT
Short form of Binary Digit. The smallest element of data in a binary-coded value.

BITE
Built In Test Equipment

Bps
Bits Per Second.

CHARACTER STRING
Continuous characters (other than spaces) in a message.

CHECKSUM
The value sent with a binary-coded message to be checked at the receiving end to verify the integrity of the
message.

CLOCK
A precisely spaced, stable train of pulses generated within an electronic system to synchronize the timing of
digital operations within the system.

DRC
Data Remote Control. With the DRC unit functions like frequency settings, BITE etc. are extended to a remote
panel. The DRC unit requires 1 separate line pair that is connected to the serial interface of the radio. Several
DRC units may share the same line. All functions in the transmitter can be controlled from the DRC.

81934_TM_TR4315_M 2
FSK
Frequency Shift Keying

GMSK
Gaussian-Minimum-Shift-Keying -GFSK using BT -products and modulation index, which optimizes the
modulated signal.

IEC
International Electro-technical Commission.

INTERFACE
Electronic circuits that permit the passage of data between different types of devices.

ITU
International Telecommunication Union.

I.ED
Light Emitting Diode.

ORC
Operators Remote Control. With the ORC it is possible to select frequencies, which are stored in the channel
memory of the radio. To ease the operation, channel names can be used for each frequency. The ORC requires a
separate line pair that is connected to the serial interface of the radio. Several ORC units may share the same
line.

RCU
With the Remote Control Unit, several radios (up to 64) can be combined on one site and interfaced to a personal
computer, using a special program (RACS).

RESET
To return stored values to either the default value or zero in memory.

SIGNAL- TO-NOISE RATIO (S/N)

Quantitative relationship between the useful and non-useful part of the received signal. A high S/N indicates a
good receiving condition.

S/N
See SIGNAL- TO-NOISE RATIO

SOFTWARE
Values programmed and preloaded into memory. The values represent a permanent set of instructions for
running the automatic functions (computations) of the unit.

UHF
Ultra High Frequency; A set of frequencies in the upper MHz region.

VHF
Very High Frequency; A set of frequencies in the lower MHz region.

VSWR
Voltage Standing Wave Ratio

4 INSTALLATION

4.1 Introduction.

The transceiver TR-4315 consists of one digital receiver unit, one digital exciter unit, one PA
unit and one interface/PSU unit. The width of each unit is 14TE. Additionally a Radio
Controller might be installed in the same sub frame at a width of 28 TE. This gives a full sub
rack of 84 TE.

Figure 4.1, Complete transceiver TR-4315

4.2 Power Supply

The TR-4315 is designed to operate from both AC and DC supply. Normally AC is the main
supply and DC is the backup supply.
The TR-4315 will automatically switch to the DC backup supply in case the mains supply
fails.

The built in switch mode power supply will automatically select the proper operating voltage
when operated on AC power; this means that any AC voltage in the ranges 100-130 or 200 to
260 VAC may be used.

Connection to the power supplies should be made with good quality, shielded, power cords.

81934_TM_TR4315_M 4-1
4.3 Remote Line Interface

When operated from a remote site, the audio input can be input to up to three independent
audio lines input. The preferred input is line 1 which is a 600 ohm balanced input. Line 3 is
also 600 ohm unbalanced inputs, designed for a shorter range.
The inputs are equipped with internal line transient suppressers, however, for long lines in
noisy environment it might be necessary to terminate the lines in external suppressers or fuses.

4.3.1 Remote operation using PC

Using a PC be sure to configure LAN network (IP address/Netmask) in same range as
Interface/PSU LAN setting.
Install RACS Control software to control the radio unit.

4.4 Antenna Interface.

The antenna should be of good quality with regards to gain and VSWR to obtain maximum
performance. Make sure that the cable from the transmitter to the antenna is of good quality to
avoid mismatch problems. In areas were thunderstorms and lightning is a problem, surge
arrestors should be mounted between the antenna and the radio.

The antenna output of the transmitter is the N-type antenna connector on the back of the PA
unit. The antenna input of the receiver is the N-type antenna connector on the back of the
Digital receiver unit.

5 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

5.1 Software Interface

The Radio Controller with built in touch screen, or an external computer connected by
Ethernet can operate TR-4315. Several computers can operate the TR-4315 simultaneously.
The windows interface will be similar, and the functionality and the priority for the internal
and external computers are equal.
The interface is based on “click and drag” functionality.

5.2 Remote Operation.

5.2.1 Introduction
All settings of the transceiver are controlled over the Ethernet connection.
The remote 600 ohms lines together with the key input may be used to transmit the audio
from a remote location.

5.2.2 Remote data interface

The transceiver can be controlled over the Ethernet connection. For a complete description of
the protocol and available commands, refer to the document TR3000: TS-SP-01, which is
available from Jotron AS.
In general the transceiver uses multicast output to a predefined multicast group, this means
that the network must be able to transfer multicast traffic and routers in a WAN must be
configured accordingly. Control of the transceiver is done using UDP/IP protocols with
software acknowledge.
Both the multicast group and the IP addresses of the transceiver must be configured to be able
to control the transceiver, either from the local RACS Control Unit or from a remote system.

10.7 MHz. This frequency is used as the reference for the RF synthesiser to generate virtually
any frequency step with a resolution of a few Hz. The 10.7 MHz reference signal is filtered in
narrow ceramic filters in order to filter out the spurious components from the DDS and the
broadband noise from the Master Clock Module.

The module use the following external voltage: +12V

6.3.2.6 Voltage Converter Module, X-99479
The purpose of the Voltage Converter Module is to generate the necessary internal voltages
from the +28V input.
This is done with switch mode converters. The voltages generated are +12V, +5V and -5V.
The module consists of three switch mode regulators, three filters to prevent AC components
to cause problems for the other modules. There is also an over voltage circuit for every supply
voltage. All modules are synchronized to avoid beat frequencies between the different switch
mode circuits.

6.3.2.7 TX Main Board, X-99488

The main board connects the different modules to the TX main board. It also chooses the
appropriate BITE signal using three analogue muxes. The TX Main Board contains of the
following physical modules:

 Synth 300 – 400MHz Module, X-99475

 IF BP Filter Module, X-99473
 Mixer Module, X-99474
 Synth 550 – 650MHz Module, X-99476
 TX BP Filter Module, X-99471

6.3.2.8 Synth 300 – 400MHz Module, X-99475

This module generates a fixed frequency of either 300 or 400 MHz that is used by the Up
Converter Module. The synthesiser includes two voltage controlled oscillators and
PLL/control circuitry. VCO enable are done by a one bit parallel input. The reference for the
synthesiser is taken from the Master Clock Module (5.24288MHz).

For the manual and automatic BITE the following signals are monitored on this module:
Synthesiser lock detect.

The board use the following external voltages: +5V and +12V.

6.3.2.9 IF BP Filter Module, X-99473

In the IF Filter Module the 250, 350 or 450 MHz IF signal from the up converter module is
filtered and amplified. The output is connected to the RF mixer. The –3dB filter bandwidth is
approximately 7 MHz. Filter selection, BITE selection and amplifier enabling is done be an
8 bit shift register controlled by SPI from Main Board.

For the manual and automatic BITE the following signals are monitored on this module:
Current consumption in the two amplifier stages.

The board use the following external voltages: +5V, -5V and +12V.
