Overview

BPM Blueprint is a cloud-based process discovery and documentation platform

accessible from any browser. It is designed to be easy-to-use and collaborative, so
that a wide range of stakeholders can work together to map, refine, and improve
processes.

Easy-to-use design

BPM Blueprint is designed to be simple enough so users who have direct knowledge
of a process, but may not be familiar with process mapping, can easily enter
detailed information about how a business process actually works, or how it should
work. Because BPM Blueprint is a cloud-based application, it is accessible from
anywhere, with no software to install or maintain.

Centralization and collaboration

BPM Blueprint acts as the central repository for all process related documentation
and design assets. Process participants and stakeholders, whether down the
hall from each other or separated by an ocean, can work on the same process
simultaneously or at different times.

Up-to-date information

When users log in, they are can see immediately who has made a change or
commented on a process they are working on. BPM Blueprint keeps track of

Announcement ZP10-0267
processes shared or altered that affect the project either directly or indirectly.
Version control lets you see a history of changes made over time.

Access control: Authors and participants

BPM Blueprint offers both author and participant views. Authors can create and
modify processes. Participants can view and comment on processes but can not
modify or create them. By setting access rights, a user can be an author on one
process and a participant on another.

Ability to bring data in and share data out

BPM Blueprint allows users to import and manipulate Visio diagrams. With a single
click, BPM Blueprint can output process details as a PowerPoint presentation, Word
document, Excel spreadsheet, PDF document, XPDL file, or BPMN 2.0 file, for
execution in WebSphere® Lombardi Edition or other business process management
systems.

Key prerequisites

Supported environments include:

• Microsoft® Windows®
• Mac OS X

Description

BPM Blueprint is a cloud-based process discovery and documentation platform

accessible from any Web browser. It is designed to be easy-to-use and collaborative
so that a wide range of stakeholders can work together synchronously or
asynchronously to map, refine and improve processes on demand. Using BPM
Blueprint, business users benefit from better control and visibility into key
processes, while IT gains the ability to scale its process discovery efforts easily by
leveraging the cloud-based platform.

BPM Blueprint provides the following features and benefits:

• Simple, scalable documenting

BPM Blueprint is designed to let anyone in your company document processes
for shared understanding, analysis, and improvement. Processes can be outlined
easily as outlining in familiar PowerPoint or Word. No extensive training is needed
because structured inputs help users focus on documenting important process
details instead of determining how to document.

Because workflow diagrams are automatically generated, there is no need to learn

process notations or design methodologies. As a cloud-based tool, BPM Blueprint
is easily accessible and deployable to other users across your company requiring
only Internet access and a browser. With such an easy-to-use tool, companies can
now scale their process documentation efforts by allowing subject matter experts
(SMEs) to directly document their understanding of the process - without having
to run it all through a dedicated documentation team.
• Single, shared repository of process knowledge
BPM Blueprint also serves as shared repository of process knowledge a centralized
system-of-record to store a "single version of the truth" for every process's
documentation. BPM Blueprint removes the burden of finding, consolidating,

Announcement ZP10-0267
and reconciling process documentation from multiple sources in order to get a
coherent view of a process.
• Shared workspaces and version control for easy collaboration
With BPM Blueprint, team members collaborate in real-time. Through the
browser, everyone has instant access to the shared workspace of any process.
Collaborating team members can edit the same process simultaneously.
Everyone's view of the workspace is updated in real-time to reflect changes as
they occur. BPM Blueprint tracks and logs every change, simplifying auditing
and compliance. Version snapshots are created at the click of a button, allowing
process owners to review and accept changes, easily roll undesired changes
back, and "go back in time" to view historical snapshots to recall how the process
description has evolved.
• Access rights for authors and participants
BPM Blueprint offers both "author" and "participant" user roles. As an author
you can create, modify, and share a process. Participants can view and comment
on processes but can not modify or create them. Access control is set up on a
per-project basis. A user may be an author for one process and a participant for
another. Participants subscribe to BPM Blueprint at reduced rates.

Security of your information is a top priority for BPM Blueprint. Only users invited
by a BPM Blueprint account owner may view and collaborate on the processes
stored in the account.
• Problem analysis
Using its analysis mode, BPM Blueprint easily highlights the information your team
has collected about your process. Using heat maps, areas of waste, high cost or
cycle time and opportunities for improvement instantly stand out. Analysis mode
shows users where to focus their efforts for process improvement. There is no
need to speculate on which improvement opportunity has the most impact for the
business.
• Follow up with process execution and optimization
Because users can take the next step in improving their processes, BPM Blueprint
shares processes directly with WebSphere Lombardi Edition - a business process
management suite (BPMS) used to execute and optimize mission-critical
processes. BPM Blueprint can export process models to other modeling and
implementation tools such as WebSphere Business Modeler.
• Template library to jump start new process design efforts
To accelerate the design of new processes or optimization of existing processes,
BPM Blueprint includes a library of template process maps that are based on
industry best practices. The Template Library in BPM Blueprint includes process
maps from the American Productivity and Quality Center (APQC).

Product positioning

The BPM market is extremely broad and growing. Every day, more and more
companies are kicking off process improvement projects. When a process
improvement project is successful, the business value delivered can be very
significant, resulting in less effort, lower costs, lower risks, more productivity, and
higher agility to improve your competitive position in your industry.

To guarantee success of any process improvement project, it is imperative that all

business process stakeholders are aligned on the fundamentals:

• What are the overall goals of the process improvement initiative?

• How does the process work today?
• What specific problems exist in the process today? What are the costs of each
step?
• Where is there value-add work done, and which steps provide no value-add?
• How should the process be changed to remove problems, lower costs, and avoid
non-value-add work?

In many organizations, process knowledge is not widespread. The knowledge either

lies with a few gurus, or more likely, bits and pieces of process knowledge are
distributed across the organization such that users knows their little piece of the
puzzle, but no one has the complete big picture.

To that end, BPM Blueprint provides an easy-to-use environment for the rapid
discovery, definition, and documentation of business processes. Its graphical design
and visualization tools are specifically designed to make it easy for all process
owners and business users to engage directly in the analysis and improvement of
their business processes. As a cloud-based offering, new contributors to the team
can be added on demand and immediately, with no extensive training.

BPM Blueprint provides the single, shared repository where anyone can find the
'single version of truth' about any process. In this way, BPM Blueprint facilitates
successful process improvement projects by enabling everyone on your project
improvement team to get aligned on process goals, problems, and areas for
improvement.

When your BPM team is ready to inventory, discover, and analyze the details of
their own processes, BPM Blueprint can be used as the 'system of record' for storing
and sharing the detailed information for all of your processes. As processes and
improvement opportunities change over time, the details can be documented in BPM
Blueprint so that there is a single spot where everyone can go to access the latest
up-to-date information.

BPM Blueprint directly integrates with other offerings in the IBM® BPM Suite, such
as WebSphere Lombardi Edition, for implementation, execution and optimization
of business processes. BPM Blueprint also exports process models to WebSphere
Business Modeler, for further modeling or analysis, or for implementation with
components of WebSphere Dynamic Process Edition or FileNet® Business Process
Manager.
