Performance Task

The City of Edmonton is providing a grant of $500,000 to students who create a solution to be
implemented throughout their community that will have a positive effect on their local
environment. Your group will present a 5-minute project pitch to the City Council that identifies
a local environmental concern and a solution to this issue.

Your group will:

 Identify a local environmental concern
o Food waste, garbage disposal, landfills, gas emissions, transportation, recycling,
reducing water, etc.
o Must pass by Ms. P
 Research how this issue negatively effects the environment (using key concepts
throughout the unit)
o Effects on ecosystem
o Effects on humans
o Pollution
o Acute and chronic toxicity
 How was the concern detected and how can we measure this in the future? (indicators,
monitoring, laws)
 Research solutions that other individuals, communities, provinces, and countries may
have already identified
 Come up with your own solution/innovation
 Identify how your groups solution will help reduce environmental impacts within your
community
o Will it need to be created? Is it a prototype? Is it educational awareness? Is it a
new community program?
o How will you implement this in the community?
o What are the advantages of this innovation on the environment?
o Are there any potential cons/risks associated with this innovation?
o Do the benefits outweigh the risks?

Groups can present their project pitches in a modality of their choosing (powerpoint, poster,
video, skit, diagram/prototype).
