Welcome
welcome
Hello Campers!
Welcome to Craigslist Foundation’s Third Annual New York Tri-State Area Nonprofit Boot Camp, a
forum for collaboration, service and community. Our goal today is to educate, empower and connect
the next generation of nonprofit leaders and social entrepreneurs—and in case you couldn’t tell, that’s
you!
We are honored to be joined by hundreds of delegates and supporters today. Collectively, those in
attendance will touch more than 50,000 lives this year. You and your organizations will address climate
change, fight homelessness and poverty, ensure quality education for all, care for youth and the elderly,
promote human rights, entertain and inspire through the arts and spread your personal truth. It’s
Welcome
our pleasure and honor, and in fact our mission, to help you help.
A few words of advice. First, remember that this is Boot Camp. So if a classroom is a little crowded,
if your Nonprofit Consulting slot is taken, if there aren’t enough handouts and so forth, please take
it in stride. Focus on why you’re here, and realize that today can be an inflection point for you and
for those you serve. More than 90 percent of previous attendees have said the ideas, inspiration and
connections they forged at Boot Camp continued to serve them more than six months afterwards: this
is not just another conference. Second, remember that we are all in this together. We are working to
build a Movement: you’re part of it, as is your organization, as are your ideas. That means in addition
to absorbing everything you can to advance your cause, be on the lookout for ways to support your
brothers and sisters. Go out of your way to share resources and ideas, contacts and encouragement. We
guarantee you’ll be amazed at the returns.
So go! Go and relish in this extravaganza, previously referred to by one attendee as “Woodstock for
Nonprofits.” It’s a love fest made especially for you and the community you serve, a place where
everyone believes in your work.
In community,

about
boot camp
Craigslist Foundation
www.craigslistfoundation.org
Founded in 2000 by Craig Newmark and others, Craigslist Foundation is a publicly supported, non-
endowed 501(c)(3) operating foundation (not a grantmaking institution). Just as craigslist.org is about
“people helping people” by facilitating online connections, Craigslist Foundation creates community in
the nonprofit world by “helping people help,” regardless of cause or sector. We are uniquely positioned
to support nonprofits by providing free and low-cost educational opportunities to emerging nonprofit
leaders and social entrepreneurs, thereby fulfilling our mission of “providing knowledge, resources, and
visibility to the next generation of nonprofit leaders.”
Roughing It
Craigslist Foundation works hard to keep Nonprofit Boot Camp affordable for emerging nonprofit
leaders. This is Boot Camp, after all, so, while you can expect high-quality educational programming
and networking opportunities, you may also have to “rough it.” You might find yourself in a crowded
room sharing handouts. You might trek to far corners of the building for a workshop or collect your
lunch from a cardboard box. You might even wait in line. So sit back, relax, take off your shoes, find
some standing room and welcome the adventure.
Information Overload
Boot Camp is an action-packed day with many options for participation. Ideas, facts, opportunities
and business cards will be coming from all directions. It just isn’t possible to take it all in. Take a deep
breath! This program is a complete guide to the New York Tri-State Area nonprofit support resources,
people, and organizations that can help you back in the real world. Workshops will also be available
on the Craigslist Foundation website as free podcasts, along with support materials, attendee notes and
an online community that can extend Boot Camp from one day to a year-round experience.

About Grassroots.org
At Grassroots.org, we believe that the best forms of social innovation come from the ground level—
d i s c u s s i o n s

from the individuals and organizations embedded within communities. Unfortunately, those with
the best ideas do not always have access to the tools, training or time they need to fully realize the
potential of their ideas. Our aim is to empower these individuals and organizations to make change
by providing them with powerful capacity-building tools and services.
Our ultimate goal is to save 10,000 nonprofits $10,000 each per year—for a total savings of $100
million! We believe this grassroots strategy will ultimately result in exponential positive change, as
those who are most equipped to effect change find themselves with the extra resources necessary to
catalyze it.
