Adding or Replacing a CD or DVD Drive

Support details

This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows 95, 98, Me, and
XP.

This document provides step-by-step instructions to install, remove, or replace a CD or DVD drive.

Print this document for reference after the computer is restarted or when an Internet connection is not
available.

NOTE: HP cannot be held liable for damage resulting from incorrect installation of software or
parts, or the installation of parts or software that were not supplied by HP.

Before you begin

Get a Phillips screwdriver, a medium flat-blade screwdriver, and a flashlight.

HP strongly recommends using an antistatic wrist strap and a conductive foam pad.

Find a clear, flat, stable work surface over a floor that is not carpeted.

If you are adding a drive to a computer that already has a CD or DVD drive, you might need
an IDE cable with three connectors. Some computers use IDE cables with only two
connectors, one for the motherboard connection and one for the drive.

Figure 2: Finding the drive in Device Manager

6. Click Remove , and then click OK when the warning window displays.

7. Close all programs and turn off the computer. Continue to the next Step .

Step 2: Opening the case

Use the following steps to open the case:

WARNING: The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any
interior metal edge of the computer.

CAUTION: This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic

discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a
noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive
foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

1. Unplug all cables from the back of the computer except the power cable. Write down each
cable location as you remove it.

2. Unplug the power cable. With the power cable removed, press the button on the front
of the computer.

3. Remove the screws that attach the side panel to the computer. Do not remove any other
screws on the back of the computer, such as the power supply screws.

4. Slide the left panel towards the back of the computer to remove it.

Figure 4: Removing the side panel

5. If the front of the case prevents you from removing the drive, remove the front cover. You
might need to remove the other side panel to access the front cover.
Press in on the tabs attaching the front cover (three or four on each side), and gently pull it
forward. Carefully remove any cables attached to the front cover.

Step 3: Removing the CD or DVD Drive

The following steps explain how to remove a drive you want to replace or upgrade. Skip to Step 4 if you
are adding a new drive without removing an existing drive.

1. Find the CD or DVD drive you want to replace, probably in a top bay towards the front of the
computer.

2. Disconnect the power cable and IDE interface cable from the back of the drive. Remember
where each cable and connector goes because you must reconnect them to the new drive.

Figure 6: Removing the drive cables

There might also be a small audio cable connected to the drive. Detach this cable from the
back of the drive.

3. If the drive is attached to the case with screws, remove all screws on each side of the drive.
Keep the screws because you will need them later.

4. Slide the drive forward through the front of the computer and remove it.

Step 4: Installing a new drive

Use the following steps to install a new 5.25 drive into the computer:

1. If the drive bay is covered by a bay insert, remove the bay insert using the following
instructions:

a. Slide the tip of a flat blade screwdriver in between the side of the bay insert and the
body of the computer.

b. Using the screwdriver, apply light pressure to one side of the bay insert while pulling
it out slightly.

c. Do the same thing on the other side, and remove the bay insert.

2. Align the new drive in the bay opening and slide it in until it is even with the front of the
computer, aligning the screw holes in the drive with the holes in the computer. If the drive
attaches to the computer with a plastic latch, snap and lock it into place.

3. If the drive is attached using screws, attach the drive to the drive bay using all the screws. CD
and DVD drives are susceptible to vibration so it is important to seat all screws snugly against
the metal drive bay.

Figure 11: Attaching the drive

4. Make sure the new drive is set to Cable Select or CS. Most new drives are already set to
Cable Select.
If the drive is not set to Cable Select, change it to Cable Select.
If you do not know which pins represent Cable Select, check the labeling on the drive, looking
for CS. If the drive is not labeled, see the drive documentation.

Figure 12: Cable Select setting

5. Connect the end of the IDE ribbon cable into the IDE interface connector on the back of the
drive as follows:

If there is only one CD or DVD drive in the computer, connect the IDE ribbon
cable using the last connector (Master).

If there are two CD or DVD drives in the computer, connect the IDE ribbon cable
using the unused connector.

Figure 13: IDE cable

1 - Slave connector (or second drive)

2 - Master connector (first drive)

6. If the IDE cable was removed from the motherboard, connect the other end of the IDE cable
into the motherboard. Be careful not to dislodge the other cables, and make sure that the IDE
cable fits snugly into its connector. Use a flashlight to make this easier.

7. Connect the power cable and sound cable (if used), into the back of the drive. Be careful not
to dislodge any other cables.
NOTE: It might be helpful to detach the drive and slide it forward a little while connecting
the cables. After attaching all the cables, slide the drive back, and fasten it into
place.

Step 5: Replacing the covers

1. If the front cover was removed, connect any cables to the front cover, and align the tabs on
the front cover with the holes in the front of the computer. Snap the front cover into place.

2. Replace a side panel by matching the side panel tabs with the tab openings in the case.

3. Insert the side panel and slide it forward.

Figure 16: Replacing the side panel

4. Fasten the screws to secure the side panel. Repeat for the other panel.

Figure 17: Securing the side panel

Step 6: Installing drivers for the new drive

1. Connect all cables and turn on the computer.
Windows opens and finds the new hardware.

2. If a new drive was installed, see the instructions that came with the drive.

3. If a window displays requesting help finding particular files, browse the following pathnames,
one at a time, until the lost file is found:

C:\i386

C:\Windows\inf

C:\Windows\options\cabs

C:\Windows\system

C:\Windows\system32

4. Restart the computer and test the new drive.

NOTE: If a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive is installed, the computer might recognize it as a CD-ROM
drive until CD writing software is installed.
