COFA TALKS: What Should School Children Learn About Art? 
With the move to create a national curriculum for Australian school children, one of the most 
contested areas has been the visual arts curriculum. What exactly should school children learn about 
the visual arts? What do we expect people to know before they come to COFA? Is it enough to teach a 
creative approach to life, or are their specific skills and bodies of knowledge that any commencing 
student should know?

Sylvia Ross is the head of COFA’s  Kim Snepvangers is Head of  Dr Kerry Thomas is a senior 

School of Art. She is a sculptor and  COFA’s School of Art History and  Lecturer in Art Education at 
printmaker who has taught  Art Education. She is researching  COFA. She lecturers in the areas

MESSAGE FROM ACARA 

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT IN THE ARTS 
ACARA is continuing to consult with the education profession and the community as it proceeds with developing 
further learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. 
As at the end of January, ACARA had received over 1,600 online consultation responses and 166 written 
submissions to the draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts. Respondents included classroom 
teachers, curriculum authorities, parents, industry groups and university lecturers. 
The extensive feedback on the draft shape paper is being analysed and the resulting consultation report will be 
considered by the ACARA Curriculum Committee in April 2011. The consultation report will inform the revision 
of the draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: the Arts resulting in a final shape paper which will guide the 
writing of the Arts curriculum. 
ACARA has received more than 400 expressions of interest from potential curriculum writers and/or advisory 
panel representatives for the Australian Arts curriculum. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their 
application in April 2011. 
Consultation is now closed, and writing of the Arts curriculum will commence mid­2011.

'Flawed' national curriculum faces axe under Coalition 
THE federal opposition would scrap the national curriculum and rewrite it if it wins government. 
''I am happy to go back to the drawing board and start again,'' he said. ''Until I am satisfied the curriculum 
is an improvement on what we have now, I won't be going ahead with it.''
