Activity 1
Activity Teacher: For our first activity, kindly get ¼ sheet of paper. In this puzzle,
find the answers to what is being described in each item.
Dictation: 1. It is a composition in prose or verse presenting in dialogue
involving conflict of the characters especially intended to be acted on a
stage.
2. It is an imaginative awareness using rhythmic language that evoke an
emotional response. It employs meter and rhyme.
3. It is based on facts and the author’s opinion about a subject. The
purpose of this is to inform and sometimes persuade.
4. It is created from author’s imagination, not presented as fact.

Let us recall the major literary genres!


Drama, Poetry, Non-Fiction, and Fiction
A 4-minute video on Literary Genres through Time is presented and viewed
Analysis by the students. They answer the questions after watching the video.
“Who can tell me their observation about the content of the video?”
“Can you tell what genres are presented in the video?”

21st Century Literary Genres


Philippine literature withstood time and periods and has evolved through
generations.  For every period that passed, different genres appeared, and
these literary works rooted from all regions reflecting their culture, society,
and lifestyle. 21st century literature per se, is anything that was written
and published from the year 2000s.

1. Illustrated Novel

It is a hybrid narrative medium in which images and text work together


to tell a story. It can take various forms, including fiction written for
adults or children, magazine fictions, comic strips, and picture books.
 Story through text and illustrated images
 50% of the narrative is presented without words
 The reader must interpret the images to comprehend the story
completely
 Some illustrated novels may contain no text at all
 Examples include The Invention of Hugo Carbet by Brian Selznick
and the Arrival by Shaun Tan
2. Digi-Fiction
 Triple Media Literature
 Combines three media: book, movie/video and internet website.
To get the full story, you must engage in navigation, reading, and
viewing in all three forms
 Patrick Carman’s Skeleton Creek is an example
3. Graphic Novel
 Narrative in comic book formats
 A type of text combining words and images
 They are longer than comic books as it contains complete
narratives
 Uses the interplay of text and illustrations in a comic-strip format
to tell a story. Instead of relying on just text to construct a
narrative, it uses graphical elements such as panels, frames,
speech/thought balloons, etc. in a sequential way to create and
evoke a story in a reader's mind.
 Examples are The Mythology Class by Arnold Arre and Light by Rob
Cham
4. Manga
 Japanese word for comics
 Considered as an artistic and storytelling style
 It is used in the English-speaking world as a generic term for all
comic books and graphic novels originally published in Japan
 Examples include Shonen-Boy’s Manga (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece)
 Shojo – Girl’s Manga (Sailormoon)
 Kodomo – Children’s Manga (Doraemon, Hello Kitty)
5. Doodle Fiction
 Literary presentation where the author incorporates doodle
writing, drawings, and handwritten graphics in place of the
traditional font
 Drawing enhances the story, often adding humorous elements
 Example is Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
6. Text-Talk Novels
 Email and IM format narratives
 Stories told almost entirely in dialogue simulating social network
exchanges
7. Chick Lit or Chick Literature
 A genre fiction which addresses issues of modern womanhood,
often humorously and lightheartedly
 Chick Lit typically features a female protagonist whose femininity is
heavily thermalizing in the plot
 Examples include Vintage Love by Agay Llanera and All I Want for
Christmas by Chris Mariano
8. Flash Fiction
 A style of fictional literature of extreme brevity
 While flash fiction is written in pretty much any genre, popular
genres include romance, thrillers, horror, sci-fi, and fanfiction
9. Six-word Flash Fiction
 It allows reader to consume an entire narrative in just a moment’s
time
 No beginning, middle, or end, but tells an entire story in only six
words
 Example by Ernest Hemingway: “For sale, Baby shoes, never worn”
10. Creative Non-fiction
 Also known as literary non-fiction or narrative non-fiction
 A genre of writing that uses literary styles and techniques to create
a factually accurate narratives
 Can be personal or not
 Main element of this genre is being factual. It relies on the author’s
ability to retell events that actually happened
 Examples are “The Cardinal’s Sins”, the General’s Cross, the
Martyr’s Testimony and Other Affirmations by Gregorio C.
Brillantes
11. Science Fiction
 A genre of speculative fiction dealing with imaginative concepts
such as futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel,
etc.
 Often explores the potential consequences of scientific and other
innovations and has been called a “literature of ideas”
 Examples are Packing for the Moon by Dean Francis Alfar,
Expanded Horizons by Eliza Victoria
12. Blog
 A weblog, a website containing short articles called posts that are
changed regularly
 Some blogs are written by one person containing his or her own
opinions, interests, and experiences, while others are written by
different people
13. Hyper Poetry
 Digital poetry that uses links and hypertext mark-up
 It refers to works of verse (although not necessarily in lines and
stanzas) which could not be presented without computer
 It includes verse with links to sub-poems or footnotes, poetry
“generators” , poetry with movement or images

Now that we are done discussing the various literary genres of the 21 st
century, let’s go over once again the genres from the earlier periods.
Myths, Legends, Riddles, Proverbs, Chants,
Riddles -Consist of two parts, one functioning as a question, the other as an answer.
-a verbal puzzle
Myths -resemble folktales in content that may include supernatural beings, or
and explanations of natural phenomena
Legends -associated with a particular locality or person
-themes man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. gods, etc.
Proverbs -use grammatical and rhetorical devices including alliteration, rhyme, parallel
structure, repetition, strong imagery
-short, known sentence which contains wisdom, truth, morals, etc.
Chants -emphasize the element of melody
-maybe considered as speech, music or heightened form of speech
Poetry -considered as the oldest form of literature
-composed orally to convey message
Epic -long narrative poem that retells the heroic journey of a person

Students work in pairs.
Select one (1) literary genre from the earlier periods and 21 st century and
use this organizer to compare and contrast the two genres. Write your
answers on a sheet of paper.
