Activity Teacher: For our first activity, kindly get ¼ sheet of paper. In this puzzle,
find the answers to what is being described in each item.
Dictation: 1. It is a composition in prose or verse presenting in dialogue
involving conflict of the characters especially intended to be acted on a
stage.
2. It is an imaginative awareness using rhythmic language that evoke an
emotional response. It employs meter and rhyme.
3. It is based on facts and the author’s opinion about a subject. The
purpose of this is to inform and sometimes persuade.
4. It is created from author’s imagination, not presented as fact.
1. Illustrated Novel
Now that we are done discussing the various literary genres of the 21 st
century, let’s go over once again the genres from the earlier periods.
Myths, Legends, Riddles, Proverbs, Chants,
Riddles -Consist of two parts, one functioning as a question, the other as an answer.
-a verbal puzzle
Myths -resemble folktales in content that may include supernatural beings, or
and explanations of natural phenomena
Legends -associated with a particular locality or person
-themes man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. gods, etc.
Proverbs -use grammatical and rhetorical devices including alliteration, rhyme, parallel
structure, repetition, strong imagery
-short, known sentence which contains wisdom, truth, morals, etc.
Chants -emphasize the element of melody
-maybe considered as speech, music or heightened form of speech
Poetry -considered as the oldest form of literature
-composed orally to convey message
Epic -long narrative poem that retells the heroic journey of a person

“What are the common characteristics of conventional literary genres of
both periods?”

Students work in pairs.
Select one (1) literary genre from the earlier periods and 21 st century and
use this organizer to compare and contrast the two genres. Write your
answers on a sheet of paper.
