Conference to discuss the potential and challenges of
developing Greater Kuala Lumpur into an Iconic Smart City of the Future

1 March 2011, Kuala Lumpur – The inclusion of Greater KL as one of the 12 NKEA’s under the
Economic Transformation has created a lot of buzz and excitement. The recent announcement of
Iconic projects in Kuala Lumpur such as the 100-storey Warisan Merdeka project and the new Kuala
Lumpur International Financial District has generated interest but at the same time raised some
concerns. To enable key stakeholders to have a better understanding of the Greater KL vision and
promote dialogue and discussions among the key players involved in the development of Greater KL,
the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) and IBM will be jointly organize the Greater KL:
Smart City of the Future Conference.

“The Conference on Greater KL: Smart City of the Future intend to discuss the potential and
challenges of developing Greater KL and its transformation into an Iconic Smart city of the future”,
said Dato’ Michael Yeoh, CEO of ASLI.

The conference is designed to promote the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) that
envisages the transformation of Greater KL into one of global top 20 most liveable cities by 2020.
Through interactive panel discussions with influential local and global thought leaders from the public
and private sector, the conference aims to answer questions such as: What are the key issues
involved with the accelerated development and transformation of Greater KL? How can Kuala Lumpur
become a world-class liveable, sustainable and smart city? How can Greater KL attract more talent
and multi-national corporations? How to make Greater KL more liveable?

“We are honoured that YB Senator Dato’ Raja Nong Chik bin Dato’ Raja Zainal Abidin, Minister of
Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing has agreed to deliver the Closing Keynote Address entitled
Transforming KL to be a 21st Century Metropolis at the conference” added Dato’ Yeoh.
IBM, who will be celebrating 50 years of presence in Malaysia this year as well as 100-year
anniversary of innovative breakthroughs, is the title sponsor of this inaugural conference.

Nazerollnizam Kasim, General Manager, Government & Healthcare, IBM Malaysia said, “With the
Greater Kuala Lumpur identified as one of the 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs), it has
provided the force for us to modernise the city. These days, that doesn't simply mean building more
houses or road. It means a radical rethinking of the way that city agencies collect and use the vast
array of information now available. We are proud to partner with ASLI to host this conference and
look forward to the various exciting opportunities to collaborate and contribute to the nation’s growth
