INTRODUCTION

PENGASIH Malaysia is a Non-Profit Organization initiated by former users in 1987. They

grew gradually and created several programs for the community in Malaysia. In 1993, they
adopted the Therapeutic Approach in their programs. The members of PENGASIH are ex-
drug addicts.

They are the only Rehab Centre wholly operated by former drug users.  Currently,
they are providing treatment services for those suffering from substance abuse such as drugs,
chemicals and alcohol. Over 3,500 clients have benefitted from their program.

Not only that, they grow through knowledge building, hard work as well as through
moral support from the government, special interest groups and private citizens. PENGASIH
is an active member of World Federation of Therapeutic Communities as well as the Asian
Federation of Therapeutic Communities.

In training and development, they have worked with various organizations from USA,
Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, Maldives, Sri Lanka, South Africa, South Korea, Singapore,
Phillipines and Pakistan. PENGASIH TC approaches have been adopted by associates in
Indonesia and Maldives. We have hosted more than 100 international TC trainees, men and
women. They have extended our training services to organizations in Pakistan, Maldives,
Brunei and Indonesia.

By sharing knowledge, these people will learn much from each other. The benefit
they seek is, to live a better life – free from drugs. Together, they will make a difference in
our future, from what they are today.
THE BACKGROUND HISTORY OF PENGASIH

PENGASIH Malaysia was initiated as a Self-Help Group in 1987 by 4 former drug users. As
the group grew bigger and drug-related issues in Malaysia became chronic, the need to
transform itself into a healing movement became inevitable. Thus, PENGASIH Malaysia was
founded as a registered Malaysian NGO in 1991. On 25th September 1991, PENGASIH has
been registered. Founding members are Haji Yunus Pathi, Haji Ramli Samad, Kipol Mualim
and Haji Mohd. Samah.

The successful formation of PENGASIH was the result of strong support given by our
beloved patron, the late Tan Sri Megat Junid bin Megat Ayob, the Minister of Domestic
Trade and Consumer Affairs. Currently, our patron is the Deputy Minister of Higher
Education, Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah.

Since the beginning, members of PENGASIH has worked really hard in spreading our
healing messages within the Malaysian public. Eventually, our activities in Drug Prevention,
Intervention and Rehabilitation began to gain acceptance and recognition in Malaysia as well
as abroad.

To achieve our vision and goals effectively, PENGASIH works closely with domestic and
international bodies. We love to learn from others and we love to share what we know. This
belief has brought PENGASIH to several parts of the world.

We garnered many friends in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Iran, Sri Lanka, the Maldives,
Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, the Phillipines, Thailand, China, Russia, Australia, South
Africa, Austria, Spain, Italy, Peru and USA. We love to gain more friends with the same
mission towards Drug-free Lifestyle.
We are affiliated with the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities Inc, based in New
York. PENGASIH’s President, Yunus Pathi, is currently the 2nd Vice President of WFTC.
We are also affiliated with Asian Federation of Therapeutic Communities ( AFTC ) based in
the Phillipines, Daytop Inc in New York, PERTAPIS Singapore, AIN Society Singapore and
National Anti-Drugs Agency Malaysia

Approach using by the Pengasih to treat their client. This can be done by:

 PENGASIH REHABILITATION

B Hospice

Pengasih as well provide special care services for members with terminal illness like Aids.
They integrate the psychological and spiritual aspect of the patient care so that they will not
regret and blame others for what happened in their life

C) Support Group

Pengasih also act as a place for social learning. Basically, people who have been drugs addict
do not really know how to get involve with the community because they may feel like a bad
person and the community does not accept them. Hence, here at Pengasih they try to break
the barrier that has been in mind by encourage members to act as a role model. Here are one
of the support group :

D) Prevention

Besides that, one of the main activities that Pengasih held is doing the prevention programme
from the drugs. The main targets of the prevention programme are from group teenagers,
youth, parents, aborigines, senior citizens.
