Introduction

This booklet is a select bibliography of the scholarly research on various

aspects of Celtic migrations in antiquity and their interaction with
communities in the area which is nowadays Bulgaria. It was aimed to
comprise the most important publications on archaeology, numismatics,
history and linguistics related to these questions. As the usage of the
word Celtic in this context may raise some questions among certain
modern scholars, particularly archaeologists, it is given in inverted
commas on the front cover. Nevertheless the compilers of this Select
bibliography still think that this remains a very useful umbrella term for
the historical and linguistic matters considered below. As for pre-
history, some thirty years ago “Celtic” and “La Tène” were nearly
interchangeable terms in archaeological studies, analyzing material
evidence of cultural contact between the Eastern Balkans and Central
Europe during the second half of the I millennium BC. Some of the
titles collected in this bibliography clearly illustrate such an approach.
In Bulgarian archaeology “La Tène” was also used as a chronological
label of finds contemporary to the “Second Iron Age” in Temperate
Europe, but the artefacts were related to the ancient Thracians. Modern
archaeologists, however, prefer to use the terms “Late Iron Age” or
“Pre-Roman Age” in order to avoid any connotation with “Celtic” or
“La Tène” culture. Taking into consideration both changes in
terminology and the ambivalence of different definitions in
archaeological frameworks the compilers decided to keep “Celtic” as a
traditional term, which covers the subject and is relevant to the titles
included in the present Bibliography. The booklet is also intended as a
preliminary guide to the history of research. In this respect “Celtic”
provides a reference point to the achievements and current state of
investigations not only in the field of archaeology. The same term is
uncontroversially used in linguistic and onomastic studies. As for the
phrase Celtic Bulgaria, notwithstanding its visible paradoxical
chronological controversy, it fits the English-language tradition fairly
well, compare in this respect, e. g., Visigothic Spain or Roman Wales.

Celtic migrations and presence in the territory of modern Bulgaria are

traced on various levels and attested in different chronological periods
of proto-history and antiquity. The data of the earliest known language

3
spoken in the area, viz. Thracian, has long been considered and
sometimes fruitfully compared to that of Celtic on the Proto-Indo-
European level. On top of that, a theory accepted by a number of
scholars placed the (proto-)Thracians and the (proto-)Celts in
neighbouring territories, which subsequently pointed to closer links
between the languages genetically, and a possible linguistic contact
between the bearers of the two idioms. Penetration of speakers of a
Continental Celtic language, both as invaders and mercenaries, into the
region is reported in the works of ancient historians – Polybius,
Pausanius, Pompeius Trogus, etc. A study of archaeological finds such
as La Tène imports from Central Europe alongside research into
linguistically Celtic toponyms preserved by the authors of classical
antiquity and the early Middle Ages (Ptolemy and Procopius among
others) constitute the basis of modern attempts to define areas under
their control or influence in the territory of present day Bulgaria. The
most important of them is of course the so-called “Celtic kingdom in
Thrace with its centre at Tyle” which emerged after the famous raid on
Delphi in the III c. BC. It is noteworthy that its exact geographic
location is still disputable, although its position in the eastern part of this
area is beyond doubt. Other enclaves, where the distributions of
artefacts and place-names attributed to the Celts roughly coincide,
possibly include areas in north-western Bulgaria. Stray finds of artefacts
associated with the Celtic migrations and their interrelation with local
communities are attested in various parts of the country. Historical
interpretations of archaeological data may vary, as, for example, in the
case of a chariot fittings from a burial near Mezek in south-eastern
Bulgaria which has become a subject of lasting dispute. The Roman
conquest of the lands and their subsequent inclusion in the orbit of the
Empire brought there colonists and veterans from the “Celtic west”,
some of whom bear Celtic (or possibly Celtic) names which are
preserved in inscriptions. Greek inscriptions, predominantly from the
east of the country, also contain several personal names which are
interpreted as Celtic and these are probably associated with the most
eastern enclave of the Celts – Galatia in Asia Minor. It is needless to
add here that a linguistically Celtic anthroponym does not presuppose
automatically that its bearer is a speaker of Celtic, and, therefore, any
demographic research based uniquely on this parameter is doomed to
failure. This data is nevertheless of paramount importance for
Continental Celtic linguistic studies.

4
Celtic studies in Bulgaria have a long history - historical, archaeological
and linguistic aspects of Celtic presence in this area and Celto-Thracian
linguistic connections have been thoroughly studied for more than a
century. Pioneering works by scholars like the Austrian W. Tomaschek
(1841–1901) and Bulgarian academic D. Detschew (1877–1958) were
milestones in the linguistic aspect of the research. Any serious historian
of Thrace could not fail to address questions of Celtic raids in the III c.
BC which resulted in their settlement in some regions of the country.
The first article exclusively dedicated to a comprehensive study of the
historical presence of the Celts in the area – that by G. Katsarov
(1874–1958) – appeared in Bulgarian in 1919, while research on a
separate but ultimately important problem – localisation of the Celtic
kingdom in Thrace with its centre in Tyle – was already published by
C. Jireček (1854–1918) in 1876. Collection and analysis of
archaeological data related to Celtic migrations in the Eastern Balkans
also started in the first quarter of the last century. The pioneering studies
of R. Popov (1876–1940) and V. Mikov (1891–1970) marked the
beginning of scholarly interest in material evidence of these historic
events. The second half of the century offered more titles related to this
subject and published in Bulgarian and other European languages. The
names of their authors, such as V. Beševliev (1900–1992), Chr. Danov
(1908–1997), M. Domaradzki (1949–1998), I. Duridanov (1920–2005),
T. Gerasimov (1903–1974), B. Gerov (1903–1991) and I. Venedikov
(1916–1997), to mention just a few, are known to every student of the
discipline. The end of the century and the first decade of the new
millennium have presented more published research on the subject,
brought into being by Bulgarian scholars and by academics from other
countries. The fruits of this scholarship are reflected in the Select
bibliography.

The bibliography is arranged following the English alphabet. The names

of Bulgarian and Russian authors, if the corresponding publications are
available in their mother-tongues, have been transliterated (official
transliteration standard 2006 has been applied), and their spelling in the
Cyrillic alphabet is also provided after a slash. The titles, all in
chronological order, if in Bulgarian or Russian, are given first in the
original and then translated into English, or, in some cases, into other
European languages if a contribution contains a corresponding summary
which is traditionally quoted in this manner. Titles of the books

5
containing contributions listed here, if in Bulgarian or Russian, are
transliterated and/or translated. When the compilers assumed that a
heading does not properly reflect the contents of a publication, brief
explanations have been offered, sometimes accompanied by additional
bibliographic references. In order not to confuse the reader,
abbreviations are basically avoided; МИФ / MIF stands for a series of
publications Mitologiya, Izkustvo, Folklor (Mythology, Art, Folklore).

The present Select bibliography implies certain restrictions in the

selection of the data already in its title – it was not aimed to be either
complete or comprehensive. Instead, the focus was laid particularly on
the most recent research, and a reader interested in a particular problem
will find references to earlier works in the latest publications on the
subject. At the same time, a number of titles included in the
Bibliography are dated to the end of the XIX and the beginning of the
XX century. This should be considered not only as a token of gratitude
for the pioneers of Celtic studies in Bulgarian lands, as their research
has not lost its academic importance and in no way is merely of
antiquarian significance. Commentaries on the fragments of works of
ancient and early medieval authors relating to Celtic movements and
presence in the area, which are found both in academic editions and
translations in various languages and which are normally quite short,
have not been considered below. Similarly, reference works such as
Paulys Real-Encyclopädie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft, which
contains entries relevant for the matters discussed here, are not taken
into consideration. Publications of Latin inscriptions of the area which
contain Celtic (and presumably Celtic) names have been ignored. The
motivation for such a strategy is quite obvious. On the one side, in their
discussion of Celtic anthroponyms found in these texts academics
normally referred to the compendium of A. Holder (1896–1913), and,
on the other, references to the editions of these inscriptions are
conveniently collected in Minkova 2000. Both the latter works are
already presented in the bibliography, while a comprehensive list of the
known editions would have increased the volume of this publication
significantly. However, the editions (alongside relevant studies of Celtic
onomastics) which are either missing in M. Minkova’s exceptionally
useful collection of personal names in the Latin inscriptions of Bulgaria
or post-date its publication, have been considered. Similarly, references
to the editions of Greek inscriptions with Celtic anthroponyms found in

6
Bulgaria are not provided – a reader will find a list of them in an article
by the late I. Duridanov (1997) and using the index to the most valuable
collection of Greek inscriptions of the area by G. Mihailov will be able
to get acquainted with the corresponding inscriptions. Generally, recent
publications presented in this Bibliography may vary in their attitudes to
the data and its interpretation, and even the academic level. It has been
considered reasonable, however, not to comment on the publications,
some of which offer conclusions different to the opinions of the
compilers of this booklet. Research on various aspects of Celticity
(Celtic migrations and influences) of the neighboring areas has been
referred to insofar as it takes into account the relevant data from the
territory of modern Bulgaria; these contributions are normally briefly
annotated.

The compilers of the Select bibliography sincerely hope that in the

nearest future further progress in the studies of various aspects of
Celticity of Bulgaria in antiquity will make this publication slightly
outdated. We anticipate, nevertheless, that “Celtic” Bulgaria is and will
remain a useful reference tool for further research.
