Chief Public Defender Kane County, 16th
Judicial Circuit
Duties
The duties of the public defender are established by statute, (55
ILCS 5/3-4006). In addition to representing indigent defendants, the
Kane County Public Defender appoints and supervises a staff of
full and part time attorneys and support staff. Incumbent
establishes office policies, prepares departmental budgets, and
performs related work as required. Incumbent also assigns,
directs, and evaluates the work of the legal staff in providing
competent legal services to the public within the rules of law and
legal ethics. The incumbent must have the ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with employees, court
officials, public officials, the public, and members of the local Bar
Association.
Special Skills or Qualifications Required
Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Illinois and have at
least five years experience in providing criminal legal services
including felony trial work and experience in other areas of
criminal law. Other qualifications should include proven effective
administrative skills; knowledge of modern principles and
practices of criminal law, interviewing and counseling techniques,
ability to train and develop subordinate professionals in legal
research and presentation methods, and the ability to anticipate
and solve various types of problems.
Salary and Benefits
The salary is set by statute at not less than 90% of the
compensation of the States Attorney. The starting salary for this
position would be $149,850. The Benefits package is the same as
offered to all employees by Kane County. This position is full time
and therefore the incumbent cannot engage in the private practice
of law.

Wow, the news today
said that for the fourth year
in a row and not since
records began more than a
hundred years ago,
Chicago has received more
than 50 inches of snow.
Downstate we are just not
quite so lucky. Still we
have received our share of
weather this winter includ-
ing a tornado, thunder
snow and freezing rain.
With the advent of the
snow comes SNOW
DAYS! I am just like the
kids in school. I love snow
days. When you live in the
country like I do even a lit-
tle bit of snow on a windy
day can keep you off the
roads. So even though I
love my paralegal assign-
ments, a snow day is a day
to decompress. A snow
day is “a whatever I want to
do day”. A snow day is also
a guilt free day. Really.
Advisories tell everyone to
stay off the road and be
safe. If you live in the city,
those sidewalks won’t be
cleared and you can risk
falling and hurting your-
self. So having just had a
snow day (without power)
from the Blizzard of 2011, I
want you to consider what
to do when you have a
snow day.
Here’s my list for snow
days:
1. Take a nap. Sure, you
just got up in case you had
to go to work, now you
don’t have to go so, take a
nap;
2. Read a book. You are
not going any place. Pick a
book and read for a while;
3. Go outside. It’s really
nice to go outside and
enjoy the snow when you
don’t have to do anything
else. You can shovel the
sidewalk if you want but
don’t overdo it. Or, you can
be really community mind-
ed and shovel someone
else’s sidewalk.
Remember, the goal of a
snow day is to have fun;
4. When you come in
from making the snowman,
having a snowball fight or
making snow angels, it’s
time for hot chocolate.
5. Watch something you
would not ordinarily watch
on TV. Or, more impor-
tant, don’t watch any TV.
Start a project.
6. Start a fire (in the
fireplace if you have one).
If you don’t have a fire-
place, don’t start a fire!
7. If completing tasks
makes you happy, balance
your checkbook, do the
laundry, run the vacuum
cleaner, you get the pic-
ture.
