Basic knowledge in industrial economics
Challenge
This Course is an introduction to the so called "sharing Economy". It aims at providing the
students with a good understanding of the economy of collective consumption which seems to
bloom.
It is built on a case study where the student is asked to analyze the different elements of a
sharing, or peer-to-peer project (users, providers, infrastructures, key assets, key partners,
financial model, etc.) To structure the analysis, we strongly recommend the business model
canvas (see below)
During this 40-hour UE, you'll face different related challenges regarding one project to
assess its business model
For each of these sections, we will provide you with the analytic tools (theoretical human and
social science theories) to be able to analysis a situation related to the sharing economy.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the UE, the student will be able to:
- describe a Value proposition: presentation of 1) the need(s) addressed by the
company/organization/ecosystem, 2) of the different offers existing and of their positioning
- list and explain the Key/Complementary Assets of a platform/company (assets understood
as 'investments'): What are the main, specific (key)investments which make the innovation
difficult to imitate? What are the complementary assets needed to create a value for the
consumer and how are they controled by the company? See:
http://innovationzen.com/blog/2006/08/24/innovation-management-theory-part-5 presentation
of the key assets, why they are key, how the company/organization/ecosystem capitalizes on
them
- present the Key partners of the platform/company: why they are key, how the company
capitalizes on them
- realize the description of the business model of a platform/company: analysis of the links
between the different elements of the business model, discussion of the strategy of the
company/organization/ecosystem
