Extra Credit Assignment

Drawing Grendel
from Beowulf
Grendel is not described in much detail in the Anglo-Saxon text of Beowulf, and because
of this, readers' conceptions of him vary widely. So for your extra credit assignment, you
need to decide what does Grendel look like? It does not matter whether you can draw
well or not--I simply want to see your version. How do you view the creature in your
mind?

Aside from simply drawing Grendel, you may cut out pictures from magazines, create a
collage or a word collage, a sketch, etc. You must include at least TWO quotes from
Beowulf that helped you decide how your monster should look.

Done well and with obvious effort, this is worth 15 points.

Even if you are not in English 12, you can still do this assignment. You will need to read
Beowulf on your own to read his description.

Below are a few artist renditions of Grendel and Beowulf.
