L
ocal Granite Bay author Renée Thompson will be
one of the featured authors at the Sacramento
Library Foundation’s event, Authors on the Move, on
March 5.
Thompson has set her book, “The Bridge at Valentine,”
in 1890s Idaho with a conflict between a family of sheep
ranchers, and one of cattle ranchers.
It has been a long road for Thompson to the publica-
tion of her first novel. She has been writing for some
time, having served a stint as a newspaper columnist
and reporter, and her short stories have been published
in Narrative Magazine and Chiron Review.
By 2002, she had raised two daughters, lived in a num-
ber of rural locations with her wildlife refuge manager
husband, and held down a succession of jobs. After the
move to Granite Bay she found herself at home and
turned her attention seriously to producing a novel.
“Once you commit, it’s a turning point,” Thompson
said. “You have to actually write, and you have to be
working at it. It’s a job now.”
The idea started with the

Prize-winning author of However, she didn’t want
“Lonesome Dove” to write a traditional West-
ern, and decided to pattern
it after Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” with a different
time and setting. She researched in Idaho and also spoke
in depth with cattle ranchers and sheep ranchers.
When she finished the novel, she knew that she need-
ed a good comment from an established author to get
the attention of an agent. She went straight to the top,
and sent her first chapter to Larry McMurtry, Pulitzer
Prize-winning author of “Lonesome Dove.”
She then put it out of her mind and was surprised
when McMurtry responded.
“He said he really liked that first chapter and he’d be
happy to read the rest of the book,” Thompson said. “So
I sent it to him right away … I thought I would just go
crazy waiting, waiting, waiting for this potential blurb to
come.”
It came a short time later.
