Minimally invasive
surgery
As the only academic
medical center in Brooklyn,

Advanced reconstructive
procedures such as ligament
surgery, shoulder stabiliza-
tion and rotator cuff repair
are done arthroscopically,
through very tiny incisions.
Our specialists in hand and
foot & ankle surgery use this
same minimally invasive
procedure to operate on the
elbow, wrist, ankle and even
the big toe.
For patients with arthri-
tis, viscosupplementation,
which involves a pain-
less injection into the knee
joint, is a 5-minute, in-office
procedure that has almost
instantaneous results for the
patient.
Back & neck pain
If you have back or neck
pain, “Early intervention is
always advisable,” states Paul
Pipia, MD, Chief of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation
(“physiatry”) at Downstate.
Physiatrist Kevin Pak, MD,
explains, “Our first step is a
comprehensive diagnosis to
determine the cause of your
pain. We generally begin with
conservative treatments:
anti-inflammatory medica-
tion, muscle relaxants, nerve
stabilizers, prescription pain
patches and physical thera-
py. If pain still persists after
conservative treatments are
exhausted, further tests may
be ordered such as x-rays, CT
scans, MRI or nerve studies.”
Pain management
According to pain man-
agement specialist, Dr.
Sanjeev Agarwal, MD, “A very
small percentage of patients
actually require surgery.
Many people find relief from
pain through intervention-
al procedures. Epidural or
facet joint injections can be
extremely effective in reliev-
ing chronic pain, often per-
manently.”
