OPTera Long Haul 1600 Release 10 introduces the following features:
• new C-band and L-band Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA) circuit packs
• new passive components (type 1A C-band DSCM and repackaged Grid 1
Demux coupler)
• enhanced equalization algorithm provides faster wavelength activation
• software support for new OSA circuit packs
• extended reach
— by leveraging OPTera Long Haul DWDM Terminal (DT), reach is
extended to 14 spans (express) with the introduction of the new
DSCMs for NDSF and the use of the new design flat gain (DFG) offset
amplifier attribute
— optical add/drop multiplexing (OADM) application extensions to eight
spans with one to three OADM nodes for each link without Raman
• increased flexibility supports OPTera Long Haul DT circuit packs
• new DFG offset parameter
• push button equalization (PBE) supports 16 spans
• equalization of Raman links without OSA for low channel counts
• lower wavelength activation time
OPTera Long Haul 1600 Release 10 also includes all release features from
previous releases. OPTera Long Haul 1600 Release 10 is supported by Preside
Applications Platform 9.2 SP1.

The OPTera Long Haul 1600 Release 7 Rev. 1 NTP library describes the
enhancements to the original Release 7 1600G Amplifier and the new features
planned for the OPTera Long Haul 1600 Release 9 Repeater. The
enhancements to the 1600G Amplifier and the new features of the Repeater
have now been combined in OPTera Long Haul 1600 Release 9.
As you use the Release 7, Rev. 1 NTP library, you can encounter references to
features that are supported by either Release 7, Release 9, or both software
loads. The following table describes how books are identified in the library.
Release 7 1600G Amplifier features and procedures that have not changed since initial
(April 2002) availability. These features and procedures are supported by both the Release 7
and Release 9 software loads.
Release 7 Rev 1 Enhancements to the 1600G Amplifier supported by the Release 9 software load.

Release 9 Enhancements to the Repeater supported by the Release 9 software load, and
(December 2002) ordering information for Release 9 software and hardware features.
Note: If your 1600G Amplifier requires OSAs, you must use OPTera Long Haul 1600 Release 9
software. The 1600G Amplifier features supported by Release 9 are documented in the Release 7
Rev. 1 library. For Release 9 software ordering information, see the Release 9 Addendum,
NTY315HJ.
To clarify which features are supported by which software load, the following
table lists features and applications according to the software load which
supports them.

OPTera Long Haul 1600 Release 7 introduces the following:
• scalability to a total of 80 wavelengths (up to 40 λ in the C-band and 40 λ
in the L-band) for a maximum transmission capacity of 800 Gbit/s on a
single optical fiber, in a unidirectional configuration
• optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) circuit pack that provides enhanced
channel power measurements and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR)
monitoring to enable increased wavelength capacity and assist in
extending system reach to up to nine spans
• distributed Raman amplifier (DRA) that works with the OSA circuit pack
to extend system reach to up to 12 spans
• power optimizer (PO) and push button equalization (PBE) enhancements
• support for in-service addition of channels for optical add/drop multiplexer
(OADM) and Raman applications in both protected and unprotected
networks
• support for in-service wavelength activation for express, symmetric, and
asymmetric OADM traffic patterns
• 5 λ OADM coupler
• reduced-footprint configurations that enable Line-amplifier bay density
improvements by allowing co-packaging of dispersion slope
compensation module (DSCM) passive components in the bottom of the
amplifier bay
• extended span applications
• support for orderwire open access and voice communications up to 12
spans
• L-band-only 1600G Amplifier unidirectional configurations
• bidirectional applications:
— standalone L-band application
— L-band overlay to MOR Plus systems
• intersite channel connectivity map that provides a quick view of channel
connections and OADM information for the optical link

Note: You cannot commission an OPTera Long Haul 1600 bay as a
Combiner network element from Release 6 onwards. The Combiner
network element is no longer a supported network element type. In-service
Combiner network elements are transparently converted to Repeater
network elements as part of the upgrade process from Release 6 onwards.

OPTera Long Haul 1600 Release 5 introduces the following:
• support for extension shelf 2 in an Amplifier bay
• support for wavelength transmission in the L-band, of up to 80
unidirectional wavelengths on a single optical fiber
• three amplifier building blocks: the L-band Dual Amplifier, the L-band
Booster18 amplifier, and the L-band Booster21 amplifier dual-band
architecture for optical amplification in the C-band and the L-band.
• support of in-service upgrades of the 1600G Amplifier application (C-band
configurations to combined C-band and L-band configurations)
• Push Button Equalization (PBE) as an enhancement to the channel power
equalization capabilities of the power optimizer
• support of up to two mid-stage accesses (MSA) to accommodate in-line
optical components. MSA supports OADM filters, DCM, and DSCM.
