Can you find examples from TKAM- trying to see life from other people’s perspective.

 Jean Louise “Scout” Finch is the narrator of To Kill a Mockingbird. She is an adult at the time
she narrates the book, but the book is told from her perspective as a young child over a
period of years from about six to nine. A first person point of view is used, with an
unreliable narrator. Scout is seen as a unreliable narrator because she witnessed the trial at
a very young age. These shows that she didn’t have enough maturity to fully understand the
societal rules at that time. The story is narrated from an innocent and young mind’s
perspective. The readers can only relate to young girl’s observation throughout the trial and
her life in the Great Depression .
 Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose life is narrated uniquely in the story. She is seen as a racist
women who slurs. Although Jem believes that Mrs. Dubose is a thoroughly bad woman,
Atticus admires her for the courage with which she battles her morphine addiction. Mrs.
Dubose is seen as courageous for overcoming her addiction and this shows her life struggle
in the Great Depression.
 Characters like Scout and Mrs. Dubose represent the life of different people with different
age gap and way of thinking living in Maycomb during The Great Depression. Each one of
them have different point of views on the same matter.

How did Jem vs Scout reacted when the trial ends?

 deeply upset
 cries immediately after the trial
 becomes angry every time Scout brings it up

How would you analyse Mrs. Dubose in relation to this theme?

 The important thing is to appreciate the good qualities and understand the bad qualities by
treating others with sympathy and trying to see life from their perspective. This is what
meant by coexistence of good and evil. Atticus tries to teach Jem and Scout to show them
that it is possible to live with conscience without losing hope or becoming cynical. In this
way, Atticus is able to admire Mrs. Dubose’s courage even while tolerating her racism
because she was able to overcome her morphine addiction. Atticus used Mrs. Dubose as an
example to teach his children the ‘real world’ .Scout at last sees Boo Radley as a human
being. Her newfound ability to view the world from his perspective ensures that she will not
become jaded as she loses her innocence.
