out of the bedroom; it

6. Exercise regularly,

enough space to move

been sleeping on a “double”

have enough room, until

person has only as much

(RLS) is a neurological
disorder characterized by
unpleasant sensations in
the legs and an

range in severity from
uncomfortable to irritating

eliminate symptoms.
Decreased use of caffeine,
alcohol, and tobacco may

Physicians may suggest

using a heating pad or ice
pack can help relieve
symptoms in some
patients.
Physicians also may
suggest a variety of
medications to treat RLS,
including dopaminergics,

ants), opioids, and anti-
convulsants. The drugs
ropinirole and pramipexole
have been approved by the
U.S. Food & Drug Admin-
istration for treating
moderate to severe RLS.
What is the prognosis?
RLS is generally a life-
long condition for which
there is no cure. Symptoms
may gradually worsen with
age. Nevertheless, current
therapies can control the
disorder, minimizing symp-
toms and increasing
periods of restful sleep. In
addition, some individuals
have remissions, periods in
which symptoms decrease
or disappear for days,
weeks, or months, al-
eventually reappear.

FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Community Members:
“The foundation of every nation is the education of its youth”
This quote engraved on the front of our Bolivar building serves both as a reminder
of the importance of the role of our school in shaping the future, and as a symbol of the
value our community places on education. As you are aware, public education in New
York is currently facing tremendous fiscal challenges. The Governor’s budget proposal
would cut school aid by $1.5 billion dollars, the largest reduction ever proposed by a
governor. We all agree that the state must take action in order to reduce its budget gap.
However, this proposal will have a disproportionately negative impact on high need rural
districts such as ours. The students of Bolivar-Richburg deserve the same quality of
educational opportunities as every other child in New York State, and we need to let our
legislators know that we expect to be treated fairly when it comes to funding our schools.
All of the school leaders in our area recently met with Senator Young to voice our
concerns, and many of us spoke with legislators in Albany earlier this week. We will
continue to advocate for our students. When the school and community speak in one
voice to our elected officials, we can help ensure that all of our student’s will receive the
excellent education that prepares them for a successful future.
While we face a reduction in financial resources, we also face an increase in
expectations for student performance. There will be changes coming through our Race
to the Top initiative and the implementation of the Common Core Standards. We will
also be refining our Response to Intervention process, in order to more effectively
identify and support our most at-risk students. This is an exciting and challenging time
that requires us to approach these challenges from a new perspective. As a first step in
that direction, we have realigned our Administrative Team. Beginning on March 14th,
Mike Schott will become our new Director of Curriculum, and Michelle McDowell will be
the Elementary Principal. Both administrators are dedicated to the success of our school
and students, and I know they will work hard to make good things happen. We are
fortunate to have leaders who can share their talents in new ways in order to strengthen
our District.
The development of our 2011-2012 budget continues to be a major focus of our
work during these winter months. We will be having a Budget Workshop with the Board
of Education on March 26th, with the goal of having our budget adopted at the April 5th
Board meeting. In our April newsletter, we will have more details about our plan to share
with you. In the meantime, if you have any questions or thoughts that you would like to
share with us, please feel free to call. I will be happy to talk with you.

SECONDARY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members,
As I sit here pondering the thoughts for my next newsletter, I am shocked to think
that the month of March has arrived and we are well past the midway point of the 2010-
11 school year. So much has been accomplished by our students, but in essence, the
most critical time in terms of achieving success lies ahead of us in the next few months.
It is so critical that we not rest on our laurels or past achievements, but rather, bear down
and focus and prepare to give maximum effort to ensure classroom and Regents
success. As the principal of this building I ask all of you to encourage our students to
continue to work hard and praise them for their efforts.
In terms of Regents success, I feel compelled to share with you that according to
Business First, our high school ranked 52nd out of 119 Western New York high schools.
Some highlights to come from this report were the 3rd place ranking in U.S. History, 26th
in E.L.A. and 19th in Chemistry. While proud of these results, we are never satisfied with
where we currently rank, and hope that with parent support, teacher commitment and
student buy-in, that we will continue to improve in all areas of academic achievement.
Speaking of academic achievement, I would like to speak to President Obama’s
State of the Union Address he gave back on January 25, 2011. I hope that many of you
had the opportunity to watch the President speak that evening, and in particular listen to
him talk about education and its importance for our great nation. The President stated, “If
we are to win the future...then we also have to win the race to educate our kids.” The
President later stated that over half of all new jobs that are being created in our country
are going to require an education beyond a high school diploma. Finally Mr. Obama went
on to challenge all of us citizens, parents and teachers to rise to the challenge facing us
today in terms of ensuring that our students are given every possible opportunity to
succeed. He said that the primary responsibility to make sure that this happens, starts in
the home and that it is a parents’ responsibility to instill a love of learning in their child.
He gave specific examples of how as parents we need to take the time to turn off the T.V.
and sit down with our children and make sure that homework is done. He also
challenged those of us in education to create schools based on high expectations and of
high performance.
In terms of what the President said that evening, I could not agree with him more.
We as a nation, state and community we are facing some incredibility difficult times, and
now is the time for us all, parents and schools, to come together for the sake of our
children and our country. We cannot sit back and expect one side to take on the
responsibility of ensuring our children are properly educated and capable of competing
for these new jobs and against foreign competition. We both bare this responsibility
evenly and need to make a concerted effort to see that this happens. While the task may
seem daunting, really all it requires is a sacrifice of some of our own personal time and a
willingness to take the initiative to talk to our children, students, parents and teachers.
The reality is that we all want to same thing, that being our children to be safe, healthy

As you walk into the entrance of the Bolivar-Richburg Middle/High School there is a
statement etched in the granite which reads, “The intelligence of the people is the
security of the nation.” What a poignant statement and one that I hope we all believe in

Elementary Principal
I have very mixed feelings as I write my last article as the elementary principal. As
I told you in an earlier letter, I will be changing positions on March 14th and assuming the
role of Director of Curriculum. I am eagerly looking forward to the change in my career.
During my seven years as principal, I will be taking with me many fond memories.
They say that as a teacher, if you can impact at least one student’s life in a positive way,
then you have done your job. I have to say that the faculty, staff, students, parents, and
community members through the years have certainly impacted my life in a positive way.
Creating a positive learning environment at the elementary where students felt
safe and teachers wanted to come to work has been one of my goals each year. I have
also encouraged teachers to step out of their comfort zone and take chances when it
came to instruction. I wanted people to feel my door was always open and they could
feel free to come and talk with me about any issue. While the road was not always
smooth, I feel I have nurtured an atmosphere at the elementary where everyone felt
appreciated for what they were trying to accomplish in the ever changing world of
education.
I want to thank the students, parents, faculty, and staff for your team work, your
willingness to help, your effort, and dedication to making Bolivar-Richburg Elementary a
great place to learn and work. A very special thank you to Mrs. Brenda Robinson for the
outstanding job she has done as my secretary.
I have received many positive e-mails, written notes, phone calls, and people
stopping by my office to let me know how they feel about what has taken place during
the past seven years and the job I have done. I have never felt more appreciated by as
many people and I truly want to thank you all for making a positive difference in my life.

from April 25th-28th and May 2-5, at our high school building from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.,
just in time for juniors who plan on taking the SAT on May 7th. The instructors will be
provided from J.C.C. and class size is limited to the first twenty-two students who
register. Juniors who will be taking the SAT will be given priority. Students must register
in the high school guidance office. The cost of the course will be $20.00 (to be used to
purchase books, which students may keep) Students will be registered when they bring
in their payment for the class. After April 5, students from other districts will be accepted.
PENN YORK COLLEGE NIGHT SCHEDULED
Penn York College Night, the premier college night in our area, will once again be
held at St. Bonaventure University on March 30, from 6:30 - 8:30 P.M. Over one hundred
colleges and other educational institutions will be represented this year. Students and

By pre-registering, students can print a bar coded confirmation sheet to be used as an
electronic ID. At the event, students can have a college scan their bar code so they’ll get

“Talk about a workout,” stated Mr. Emery after completing a
session of the Cotton Eyed Joe! Mr. Emery and Mrs. Auman have just
wrapped up their dance unit which featured ... the Electric Slide, the
Cupid Shuffle, the Cotton Eyed Joe, the Cha Cha Slide, and the Pata
Pata. Part of our SPARKS training we have done over the last few
years included doing a dance unit for something a little different. Back
in the day, Physical Education mainly taught square dancing, or in my case Disco
dancing. Mrs. Auman and I just wanted to give the students another form of exercise that
we thought would allow them to have some fun doing. I think for the most part, the
students enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see the kids put their new moves into action at our
next dance!

The first graders have been doing a variety of activities this month. We have decided
that if we keep very busy maybe we will stay warmer. What a long winter this has been!
Our theme this month in reading has been Changes. We have thought about what is
changing in our world. We read “Frog and Toad Together” by Arnold Lobel. We laughed

Our Flat Stanley letters are returning. It is so exciting to receive letters, pictures and
postcards from all over the country detailing Stanley’s adventures. When visiting New
Hampshire, one Flat Stanley actually met a Flat Stanley from another state. Mrs. Allen’s
class especially enjoyed a box from Louisiana with a cake, Mardi Gras beads, and goodie
cups. We thank Lillian’s Aunt Karen for spoiling us.

homeroom for several weeks. Unfortunately,
this is her last week with us as she heads
over to Scio Central for her second student
teaching experience. I have enjoyed the
experience with Miss Musham and learned
much from her. She will be missed by all of

My experience at Bolivar-Richburg will never be forgotten. Spending seven weeks
in the 4th grade was full of amazing experiences, wonderful students and an even
better cooperative teacher, Mr. Conklin. I would like to thank the entire staff for making
my time here at Bolivar-Richburg an incredible experience. I have gained knowledge
and skills that I will carry with me wherever I may teach. Thank you to everyone, I will
miss you all.

Well here we are; March has arrived. Hopefully, this means spring is on its way.
We have been busy in our classroom. The students have been working diligently on
multiplication and division, as well as sentence structure and multi-paragraph essays.
This month we will be learning geometry concepts and reviewing measurement.
February’s student of the month is Tyler Haley. Tyler has made improvements in
writing, sentence formation and multiplication. Nice job Tyler. In February, we also
celebrated Mrs. Slocum’s and Mrs. Snyder’s birthdays. Teaming up with Mrs.
Snyder’s class to celebrate these birthdays was a lot of fun.
FIFTH GRADE
Miss Weitzel, Mrs. Cawley, Mr. Lounsberry.....
At this time, Mr. Lounsberry’s social studies classes are studying the Revolutionary
War. There are many amazing personalities from this time period. Among them are:
George Washington, Patrick Henry, Nathan Hale, Thomas Jefferson, and Paul Revere.
These “Founding Fathers” all played important parts in our country’s birth. What other
important Americans from this time period can you think of?
In science class, we have begun a unit on liquids. We will be doing many
experiments to learn about adhesion, cohesion, and density. In addition, everyone has
been hard at work on a project for the fifth grade science fair. You can join us on
Thursday, March 17, from 5:30 to 6:30 in the multipurpose room in Richburg if you want
to see the results of everyone’s great efforts. Winners will be announced at 6:15.
Come and be amazed at the wonderful projects that are turned in.
Graphing, percentages and geometry are the new units to be learned in math. Do
you remember what you used a protractor for? What are obtuse and acute angles? A
triangle’s interior angles must add up to what? These are just a few questions your
child will be able to answer. Reviewing for the state math test is just around the corner,
and I will be keeping groups after school so please be aware of a green Project Catch-
up slip asking for your permission to keep your child after school. Your support will be
greatly appreciated.
Students for the month are Te’a Johnson for Mrs. Cawley, Keldon Smith for Mr.
Lounsberry, and Jessen Giles for Ms. Weitzel. All of these students are hard-working,
polite, and are good friends to their classmates.

The Bolivar-Richburg Elementary School is again participating in the Penny
Wars. Penny Wars benefits people living in Allegany County who are dealing with
cancer. Last year the faculty, staff and students raised $900 and are looking
forward to surpassing this amount. If you are able to, please send in any spare
change you have with your child(ren).
Penny Wars will continue through March 23. Thank you to all those who have

HIGHLIGHTS

Happy March! We, like most of you, are hoping the snow leaves for good! Starting
March 7, the PE Department will be once again hosting their skating unit. The unit will
run from March 7 to March 25. Starting right out with our new little kindergarteners, all
the way up to our experienced 5th graders, it is impressive to see the amount of
improvement that each student shows and the progression that takes place. The first
week of March, K-2 students will begin skating with paper plates instead of roller skates.
Using paper plates provides a safe way for students to explore with the concept of
skating and give them the idea of pushing side to side as opposed to just walking with
skates on. After the first week, students will be able to try out roller skating and
participate in various skating games we have planned. We have plenty of skates and
sizes this year thanks to our PEP Grant. If you want to send your child to school with a
helmet you are more than welcome to. We ask that their name is put somewhere on the
helmet and please store it in their locker until their class time. If you do not want to send
in a helmet with your child, that is not a problem. We have some extra helmets that we
can loan out for the period. As always, we are looking forward to this unit to show
students a different way they can be active.
The boys in grades 3-5 finished up a basketball unit. They did a great job with
learning the different skills and eventually playing an actual game. It was exciting to see.
The 4th and 5th graders have finished up their dance unit with their dance party!
Thank you to everybody who brought in decorations. The kids, as well as myself, had a
blast dancing!
K-2 finished up their balance unit and did a great job working with the balance beam,
river stones, blue dots, and the big feet, as well as hula hooping.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND NEWS

This year, students at Bolivar Richburg are participating in the Odyssey of the Mind
Competition. It is a competition that tests creative thinking and problem solving skills.
Bolivar-Richburg is sending four teams to participate in this year’s event being held at
Wellsville Central School on March 12. Two teams are made up of fourth and fifth
graders; the two other teams are at the middle school and high school levels. Students
have two tasks to complete during the competition. They need to present a solution to a
long-term problem, for which they have spent the last two months preparing. They will
also be given a problem that they will have to “spontaneously” solve at the event. The
students have been working very hard on their presentations, developing their thinking
skills, and learning the importance of teamwork. If a team places first in their division,
they will advance to the state competition held in Binghamton later in March. Good luck
to all of our teams!

NARCONON DRUG REHAB SEEING BATH SALTS
AS NEW DRUG TREND
Narconon Arrowhead drug rehab takes a look at the newest
street drug of concern, bath salts, which are quickly becoming a
second to methamphetamine.
All around the country, a white powdered substance with
names like Vanilla Sky, Ivory Wave, and White Rush are being
purchased by individuals. The powder is then snorted, producing
a meth-like high. The white powder is not cocaine or any other
illegal drug. It is simply sold as “bath salts” and can be found at
many convenience stores and gas stations around the nation.
Increasingly, law enforcement agents and poison control
centers say the bath salts with complex chemical names are an
emerging threat in several U.S. states where authorities talk
of banning their sale. In fact, in Florida and Louisiana, the
bath salts have already been banned.
Mark Ryan, the director of the Louisiana Poison Center,
first heard of a new, legal drug being sold throughout the
Southeast in September. In September, Ryan says, the poison
center got its first call from an emergency room unsure about
what it was dealing with. Soon, the center and poison control
hotlines in Florida, California and all over the nation were
seeing several cases a day.
Ryan says when the drug is abused individuals are
unable to control their behavior.
“For lack of a better term, they’re flipped out. It’s almost
like a psychotic break. They’re extremely anxious and
combative, they think there’s stuff trying to get them, they’re

paranoid, and they’re having hallucinations. So, the
encounters are not pleasant,” Ryan says. “And we were finding
that some of these guys couldn’t be sedated with the normal
drugs that we would use with other stimulants.”
Ryan adds that this drug is a stimulant, a lot like coca
leaf found in countries like South America and Columbia.
However, he says, these are not naturally derived substances
but synthetic drugs that are made in labs.
Derry Hallmark, Senior Director for Expansion for

The Munitions Response process consists of seven stages; a
preliminary assessment to identify locations, research
historical records, land usage and past incident(s) in the area,
which was completed in 2008; site inspections which will begin
in summer 2011, to collect additional information, data and
samples necessary to determine if following actions are
warranted at a site.
Parsons Infrastructure & Technology Group, Inc., an
engineering and construction firm, will provide technical
project planning and conduct historical research for this
endeavor.
Inspection and cleanup of these Department of Defense
sites is eligible for Defense State Memorandum of Agreement
funding under the Defense Environmental Restoration
Program.
The 23 sites located around the state were used as local
training areas for National Guard units. The training sites
vary in size from 3.7 to 939 acres and were used between 1873
and 1994, primarily for small arms range firing.
Currently, the New York National Guard has three training
sites located in Guilderland, Youngstown and at Camp Smith,
near Peekskill. Soldiers also train regularly at Ft. Drum, near
Watertown.

CCMH WILL HOST FIBROMYALGIA SUPPORT GROUP
Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will host a fibromyalgia
support group at 6 p.m. March 14 (the second Monday of each
month) in the hospital conference room.
Terri Cooney will lead the group to provide support and
education to patients, family, caregivers and anyone interested
in learning more about fibromyalgia. She also hopes the group
will provide coping strategies and moral support as well as
boost awareness about the illness. Since being diagnosed with
fibromyalgia in 2005, she has researched the illness
extensively, including various treatment options.
Cooney is a retired high school English teacher with 16
years of experience. She is also a Reiki master and teacher and
is experienced in a number of mind/body therapies such as
meditation, biofeedback, yoga and hypnosis.
