DPP Big-5 candidates: eating their way to victory

DPP candidates for the year-end Big 5 elections
have been busy campaigning, waking early to
visit the morning markets and staying out late to
chat with voters in their homes. While this is a
whole day ordeal, the candidates often make
stops to taste local products and cuisine.
In northern Taiwan, DPP Taipei Candidate Su
Tseng-chang has found some great local delights.
During a hot summer day in the campaign, Su
didn’t hesitate to make a stop for refreshments at
his favorite Park Sour Plum Store (Kong Yuan
Hao Suan Mei) near the 228 Peace Memorial
Park. This drinks store is unique in Taipei, not
only because it has more than 40 years of history,
but also because it attracts young and old with its
fresh sour plum juice.
As Greater Taipei area is comprised of tradi-
tional towns and fast developing cities, DPP
Chair Tsai Ing-wen has made several stops to
learn about the food predominantly consumed in
these districts. She learned the art of making rice
dumplings in Kungliao Township during prepara-
tion for the June Dragon Boat Festival, and also
stopped by Shenkeng Township to taste this
town’s specialty, tofu making. In Panchiao, a city
of more than half a million residents, Tsai
visited an organic supermarket opened this
year. This supermarket features all organic
products and vegetables by local Taiwan
farmers.
In Central Taiwan, DPP Candidate Su
Chia-chuan couldn’t campaign without
promoting Greater Taichung’s most re-
nowned delicacy, the sun cake. In Feng
Yuan City of Greater Taichung, where the
sun cake originated, Su held a cook-off with
local pastry chefs in early August while
promoting his campaign platform of enlarg-
ing the sun cake popularity by building a
heritage museum and holding a world pas-
try cultural exposition.
