Red fire signs indicate danger or that an activity is prohibited. The red color must
make up at least 35 percent of the sign. Yellow and amber signs indicate a warning
that an activity is dangerous, although you are not expressly denied the right to
partake in that activity. Blue indicates a mandatory requirement that could prevent a
fire from starting, and green fire signs indicate where the emergency exits are
located. The colors make up at least 50 percent of their respective signs.

Biohazard Symbol

Also known as biological hazard, this symbol is placed whenever there's any danger or
risk that involves bacteria, fungi, or protists. You can read in detail about lab

Caution Symbol
Typically using a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, the symbol is also known as
the warning sign. It warns everyone about the potential dangers in the vicinity.

Danger Symbol

This is a more well-known safety symbols, and meaning of this sign basically tells
bystanders that there may be dangerous chemicals, hazardous machines and
equipment, or trenches in a particular area. The sign has a skull with two bones in
shape of an X. 

Electrical Safety Symbol

This sign usually has an electric wire with the plug attached to it to inform people that
there may be certain electrical machines and/or equipments. Which is why keeping
utmost care is necessary as there's a danger of getting an electric shock.
Environmental Hazard Symbol

This sign has a withered tree and a dead fish which explains that there may be certain
materials capable of causing environmental damage or pollution. 

Eye Safety Symbol

The eye safety sign shows a pair of snow goggles that suggests there may be
hazardous materials which can cause irritation to the eyes. Hence, having protective

First Aid Symbol


A circle or a square box with a green + sign usually indicates medical emergency. This
symbol should not be confused with the Red Cross symbol; big difference between the
two first aid symbols.

Fire Safety Symbol

On our next safety symbols and meanings, the fire safety sign is one of the most
important to keep in mind. It uses a burner image that indicates a risk of fire in the
location. Hence, if you are entering the area, you're not supposed to wear any loose
fitting clothes or keep your hair down.

Flammable Symbol
Again a sign of fire which usually means that in the particular location, it is possible to
catch fire fairly easily. The substance in that area is the reason for the risk of fire.

Harmful or Irritant Symbol

Harmful symbol is denoted by an X with a small 'h' on the bottom-right corner and the
irritant symbol is denoted by an X with a small 'i' on the bottom-right corner. This
harmful substance or material can cause irritation to your eyes, skin, or anywhere inside
the body.

Poison Symbol

Somewhat similar to the danger symbol, the poison symbol also has a skull and two
bones. This symbol usually means that there may be poisonous materials in the area.
Radioactive Symbol

This is another of the well-known safety symbols, and meanings of this sign usually tells
that there may be radioactive substances or materials in the area. Due to exposure
to radiation, a person can damage their cells and it can also cause cancer.

Thermal Safety Symbol

Thermal sign basically suggests that there may be objects or materials in a particular
area that can be too cold or extremely hot to touch with bare hands. As it can cause the
skin to burn, wearing protective gloves over your hands is advised.

These were few of the safety symbols and meanings that everyone should be educated
about. Used at various vicinities such as schools, science and chemistry labs, hospitals,
etc., these signs can easily warn the bystanders so that they can take proper
precautionary methods.
