 meeting  of  the  Politics  Committee  –  08/10/2010      

 
 
Present:  Jani  Helle,  Colm  Delaney,  Isolde  Boyd  and  Heather  Bosselman  .  Ben  
Hilditch  (Treaurer  2009/2010)  attended  to  hand  Treasurer  information  over  to  
current  Treasurer.  
Meeting  started  at  15.20  on  08/10/2010  
Agenda:    
1) Administrative  tools:  
• These  were  handed  out  to  all  the  new  committee  members  and  the  
other  administrative  affairs  were  talked  through.    
2) Job  Descriptions  and  Task  Divisions  of  Committee  Members  was  discussed.    
3) Union  Affiliation:    
• The  committee  decided  that  we  should  affiliate  with  the  SRC,  QMU  and  
the  GUU.    
4) Society  Affiliation  and  Co-­‐operations:  
• It  was  decided  that  Isolde  should  be  the  Politics  liaison  to  the  Model  
United  Nations  
• We  also  decided  that  we  should  co-­‐operate  with  any  other  societies  
that  our  comparable  to  ours,  such  as,  but  not  limited  to,    
• AEGIS  
• Amnesty  International  
• Economics  Society  
• Economic  and  Social  History  Club      
5) Finances  were  discussed  and  Ben  gives  Heather  the  Treasurer’s  Report  for  
the  period  of  January  2010  to  May  2010.    
6) Fundraising:    
• Bake  sales  were  proposed,  location  possibly  outside  the  library,  
between  the  hub  and  the  library.    
• A  proposal  was  made  that  when  the  society  uses  money  on  society  
events,  we  can  charge  non-­‐members  a  small  participation  fee  
•   Other  suggestions?

7) Publicity:    
• Possible  locations  for  posters:    
(a) The  QMU    
(b) The  GUU  
(c) Lilybank  House  
(d) Joseph  Black  building  
(e) Boyd  Orr  Building  
(f) John  McIntyre  Building  
(g) Adam  Smith  Building  
(h) Reading  Room  
(i) etc  
• Idea  to  have  an  official  poster  as  well  as  non-­‐official  poster  
• Possibility  to  advertise  on  screens  around  campus  discussed.    
• Ideas  and  suggestions  for  posters  are  more  than  welcome.    
8) Society  Garments:  
• Imagescotland.com  will  be  our  provider  
• Orders  must  be  placed  soon  
• Proposal  to  choose  five  or  six  garments  that  we  can  then  choose  
between.    
9) The  need  for  Level  1  and  2  representatives  discussed  and  will  be  decided  
upon  shortly.    
10)  Archives:    
• The  University  Archives  want  our  records.    
11)  Departmental  Co-­‐operation:    
• It  was  discussed  how  we  should  approach  the  department  and  what  
we  want  from  them,    
(i) Ask  whether  any  of  the  professors  would  be  interested  in  
being  a  guest  lecturer  at  one  of  the  society  meetings  
a. Proposal  to  ask  Dr.  Martin  (AM  pol  lecture)  about  a  
lecture  on  the  midterms  in  the  US

b. Proposal  to  ask  Viki  Turbine  (as  she  expressed  


interest  before)  about  a  lecture  on  Russian  politics  
(?)  
c. Proposal  to  ask  Cian  O’Driscol  to  hold  a  talk  
(ii) The  Society  would  like  to  organise  a  Question  Time  with  
MSP  candidates  from  the  local  constituency  and  thus  wants  
to  ask  one  of  the  professors  if  they  could  chair  it

12)  Events:  Events  were  discussed  and  we  came  up  with,  but  not  limited  to:    
• Pub  Quizzes  (approximately  2  pr  semester)  
• Pub  Crawls/Sub  Crawl?  
• US  Midterm  Predictions  
• Midterms  in  QM  TV  Room?  
• Scottish  Parliament  Predictions?  
• Game  nights  
• Paintball/Lasertag/Bowling    
• Scottish  Parliament  trip  (possibly  getting  an  MSP  to  give  us  a  guided  
tour  
• Tour  of  the  Glasgow  City  Chambers  
• Essay/Exam  Prep  –  find  out  when  the  Level  1  &2  essays/exams  are  
due    
• Honours  Preparation  talks  
• Voting  Registration  drive  for  the  Scottish  Elections  
• Film  night  
• Possible  Employability  talks?  
13)  Pint  and  Politics  
• Possible  locations  for  Pint  and  Politics  must  be  found  as  the  Basement  
will  be  closing  in  January  
(a) Free  group  hire    
(b) Group  discounts  on  drinks?  (The  Wise  monkey  will  give  us  free  
food  if  we  are  15  people  or  more)

(c) If  a  candidate  pub  is  found,  email  the  suggestion  to  Jani  and  we  
can  check  it  out.    
• Finding  sponsors  so  we  can  make  some  money.  The  SRC  will  no  longer  
give  us  Society  grants  or  top-­‐ups  so  alternative  ways  must  be  found.    
14)  Suggestion  to  have  May  Committee  Elections  instead  of  in  the  fall.  
• Constitutional  amendments  in  December?  

Nothing  else  was  discussed  and  everyone  was  pleased  with  the  meeting.
